In this article, we consider different approaches to teaching research methods in gerontology across a continuum of educational program levels. Our goal is to offer a conceptual framework and stimulate productive discussion of key issues and challenges in teaching research in gerontology. It is our belief that education in gerontology should include some level of training in research methodologies across all levels of gerontology instruction. Therefore, we have sought to identify those components of research training most appropriate for each level of gerontological education. Thus, basic understanding of research methods is appropriate at the associate's degree level and introductory exposure to basic issues involved in conducting research with elders provides a necessary backdrop to undergraduate programs. More in-depth understanding of gerontological research methods, particularly those involved in applied research, is a component of quality master's level programs. Finally, in-depth knowledge and the ability to apply distinctively gerontological research methods are necessary for conducting advanced original research at the doctoral level.  相似文献

Undergraduate student interest in aging was examined in relation to age, gender, and contact with older adults. Interest in aging is conceived of along a continuum, ranging from initial interest-taking an aging course-to substantial interest as evidenced by academic and career interest. Undergraduate students who have taken an aging course (n = 189) and a stratified random comparison group (n = 261) self-assessed their interest in aging. Background information, including the frequency and duration of contact with older family and non-family individuals, was reported. Being female (p < 001) and having frequent contact with older family members (p < .01) significantly explains initial interest in aging. Initial interest in aging (i.e., taking an aging course) significantly contributes to substantial interest in aging (p < .0001) i.e., taking more aging courses, majoring in gerontology, working or planning to work with older adults. Contact with older adults positively affects undergraduate interest in aging. Interest in aging proceeds along a continuum, from preceding factors to initial interest in aging and then to substantial interest in aging. Aging courses and opportunities for interaction with older adults should be offered at the undergraduate level.  相似文献

Teaching gerontology via distance education is growing in popularity. Yet, many challenges are encountered by those teaching gerontology at a distance; some technological and others pedagogical in nature. Successful strategies for structuring and teaching televised gerontology courses are presented in this paper. Strategies focus on types of teacher preparation, use of pedagogical tools, development and maintenance of rapport with students at remote sites, and ways to improve teaching of distance education classes in gerontology. It is argued that workload and compensation for instructors teaching distance education need to be addressed by administration in order to develop high quality distance education programs.  相似文献

Discerning the purpose of the educational experience aids facilitators in choosing appropriate strategies for teaching gerontology concepts. Using the curriculum positions of transmission, transaction, and transformation, this article explains the assumptions, advantages, and disadvantages of each position and gives examples from community and education-based learning settings. The curriculum positions of transmission (conveying facts), transaction (developing cognitive skills and abilities useful in problem-solving), and transformation (facilitating personal and social change), are sometimes combined to achieve educational objectives. Additional considerations in choosing teaching strategies include knowing the audience and their cultural, social, and developmental backgrounds, learning styles, reasons for participating, and prior knowledge of the subject. The educator's philosophy and professional orientation toward the educative process contribute to creating a trusting learning environment in which learners can meet objectives. Based on research and field tested in educational and community settings, the teaching strategies suggested in this article are applicable in multiple educational contexts.  相似文献

Geriatrics, a new medical specialty, is closely linked with scientific research in experimental gerontology, the biology of aging, and social gerontology and gerohygiene. The importance of using gerontological research data and data on relationships between the aged, family, and society is discussed. Emphasis is placed on (1) the development of diseases of the aged, (2) the significance of genetic factors on aging, (3) the relationship between chronological and biological age, and (4) the importance of physiological reactions in the aged to various types of treatment. This article gives some insights into the development and teaching of graduate Gerontology courses by way of distance education. Some general comments are given regarding distance education and then the two formats are explored in detail. One of the formats centers around television (video, cable television, and interactive television instructions) and the other, the Internet. Problems and advantages of teaching in each format are explored. Tips on "Some things to do" and "Some things to avoid" are shared. Attention is given to some of the instructional "techniques" which seem to work best for teaching in these formats. These tips should be helpful to persons who are just beginning teaching or who want to teach in either or both of these formats.  相似文献

There is a growing need for information on teaching art to the elderly and only a few studies that deal specifically with the topic. This paper discusses findings from studies in the psychology of aging and relates them to similar findings reported in the literature of adult education and art education to generate guidelines for the teaching of art. Suggestions are made for approaching the elderly student as a single type and for accommodating for the wide differences within the group.  相似文献
