English Neologism and Translation

Language, a reflection of social transformation, is changing with the rapid development of sociopolitics, economy, science and technology, which reflects the mushrooming of English new words. The translation of new words poses great challenges for translators. This paper analyzes the emerging of English new words, its word formation process and translation methods.

Euphemism can be regarded as a universal phenomenon in human language.It is also an important linguistic strategy in communication.English and Chinese euphemisms usually have a shared topic,such as death,disease and sex.Therefore,to some degree,English and Chinese euphemisms share some common features.However,owing to the different social and cultural background,English and Chinese euphemisms still have much difference between each other.This paper is to take some typical examples in both English and Chinese to compare euphemisms in the two languages,and try to probe some strategies about how to improve the translation of euphemisms between English and Chinese.     

Untranslatability and its Compensation Strategies——Taking The Original of Laura as an Example

As is known to all in the translation field,the problem of translatability and untranslatability has been a long-debated is sue in the field of translation.And the phenomenon of untranslatability is especially prominent in translation of literary works.This paper tries to discuss,from theory and practice,the phenomenon of untranslatability and its compensation strategies in trans lation between Chinese and English.It is roughly divided into two parts,wherein the first part deals with the phenomenon of un translatability,explaining its causes and giving some examples,and the second part deals with the compensation strategies,intro ducing several methods of compensation and taking The Original of Laura written by the deceased Russian-American writer Nabokov as an example.With the development of intercultural communication in the world and the great efforts of translators,the untranslatable words today can be translatable tomorrow.

To those whose interest is in translation, an important topic for study is the choice of words. As lexicon is the mostactive and the liveliest component of a language, in the course of translation, due attention must be given to the analysis andcomparison of words and phrases before a suitable word or phrase is chosen to convey the meaning in the original version.Meanwhile, English words and phrases are rich and the same words or phrases may be different in meaning in a certain context,therefore, the diction in translation from English to Chinese is undoubtedly a matter of importance.     

Reference in Translation——A Case Study of Translation of Kong Yiji

Reference is one of the cohesive devices of discourse,the comparison of which between English and Chinese will benefit translation practice,and a understanding of the differences in this aspect between the two languages is helpful in the reproduction of the original coherence of discourse.Based on the data of the Chinese novel "Kong yij" and its English translation,this paper will make a detailed analysis of the differences in reference and propose some translation strategies.     

English Film Subtitle Translation from the Perspective of Domestication and Foreignization—A Case Study of Ice Age

Nowadays,cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries have become increasingly frequent,which boosts the development of film industry and highlights the importance of subtitle translation.However,in China,subtitling is a relatively new research field of translation.This study explores the guiding role of domestication and foreignization strategies in English film subtitle translation.On the basis of material from Ice Age,the paper carries on the analysis of film subtitle translation in terms of expressions with typical cultural features and idiomsproverbs under the effective guidance of domestication and foreignization translation strategies.It’s concluded that domestication and foreignization strategies can provide theoretical guidance for subtitling and appropriate combination of the two strategies can achieve better translation effects.     

A Study on Translation Strategies in Tourist Translation

Tourist materials play a significant role in publicizing China’s tourism industry in the world. In the current English translation of Chinese tourist materials,some problems exist because of differences in Chinese and English style and expression characteristics. This paper is intended to conduct a preliminary study on the tourist translation and put forward some useful translation strategies.     

Translation of Lexical Stylistic Devices from English to Chinese in Commercial Advertisements

With rapid development of China,a growing number of foreign products are entering the Chinese market.An excellent translation of a product’s advertisement from English to Chinese undoubtedly contributes to its successful promotion in the Chinese market.Although the translation practice contains multiple difficulties,the translation of lexical stylistic devices is a big challenge for translators.It is not simply because lexical stylistic devices are diverse and various in form,but also because most devices involve linguistic and cultural differences between English and Chinese.This thesis analyzed a number of current English to Chinese translations of the devices in commercial advertisements,which mainly come from two translation scholars’works and official websites of world-known brands.By analyzing the selected data,seven translation strategies are found to be the major translation strategies in this respect,namely literal translation,free translation,flexible translation,extended translation,adaptation translation,compensation translation and amplification translation strategies.Moreover,a number of linguistic and cultural issues which need to be considered by translators are also illustrated here.     

On Translation of Passiveness from English to Chinese

Translation is an art,a bilingual art.Like painting,translation enables us to reproduce the fine thought of somebody,not in colors,but in words,in words of a different language.It is no easy job,not so easy as it is supposed.Many can speak and write it well,but they can not translate well.This paper is mainly discussing the method of translating English to Chinese.Also analyses and classifies the translation of the passive voice from English to Chinese,and also points several language points should be considered in translating.     

A Brief Study of Hu Gengshen's Eco-Translatology: with the Comparison of Translation Ecology

Eco-translatology and Translation Ecology are two new aspects of translation study.They arise from the development of Ecology and the interdisciplinary tendency of translation studies.The present paper intends to make a clear introduction of the two branches of translation study and make a comparison based on the introductions in order to provide insights into these new perspectives to translation studies.The paper points out that they are different in terms of developing routes,naming principles,terminology,methodology,research pivot,etc.A conclusion is drawn that clarification of their relationship will provide insights into the two branches of translation study and Hu Gengshen’s approach to translation as adaptation and selection adds a new dimension to translation study as an academic discipline.     

Translation of the Culture-loaded Words

The culture-loaded words are a special vocabulary of all kinds of language.And its translation has been one of the most difficult problems in the academic field.When culture-loaded words are being translated from the source language into the target language,the translator should have a clear knowledge of the differences in understanding the same culture-loaded word of both the source language reader and the target language reader.This paper deals with strategies for optimizing the translation of culture-loaded words,especially translating Chinese culture-loaded words into English.Alienation translation favors communicating the characteristics and connotation of Chinese and English culture.     

Domestication And Foreignization

This article sets out to study two strategies on culture translation: one of them is domestication, the other is foreignization. Numerous authentic translated versions are collected to analyze the characteristics of the two strategies in both diachronic and synchronic perspectives. It is concluded that the two strategies have their respective features and applicable values. It is suggested that the two strategies should be viewed and studied dialectically and historically rather than statically and absolutely in order to place translation practice and translation theory in a correct track.     

The Application of Semantic Relations and Denotative and Connotative Meanings in Translation Practice

Semantics,the study of meaning,is closely connected with translation,the practice of transferring meaning.The paper uses a lot of examples based on real translation practice to prove that semantics plays a very important role in translation practice.Understanding and making good use of semantic relations,including synonymy,polysemy,homonymy and antonymy,are quite important for a translator to deal with some complicated semantic problems in translation practice.The paper also discusses the concept of denotative and connotative meanings,two basic types of meaning in Semantics.Denotation means the literal meaning of a word which is given in dictionaries;and connotation,the associative and suggestive meanings of a word in its context.Be cause of cultural difference,words with the same denotations may have totally different connotations,which is why the concept of denotation and connotation plays a very important role in English/Chinese translation.In order to translate a text into another language correctly,translator must totally understand the meaning of the original word,both denotative and connotative mean ing,and be aware of the potential connotations of the word in the target language.     

Features of English Euphemism and Its Applications

English Euphemism is not only a social phenomenon, but also a lingual phenomenon. In social interaction, people have to use different words to convey their thoughts and ideas. However, some of the words are unhappy, impolite and embarrassed if directly spoken, which often make the communication unpleasant. In order to avoid the embarrassment or ease the sting of harsh words, man has created euphemism. In western cultures, people have been using euphemism widely in many different fields. This paper introduces the features and the applications of English euphemism, intending to help people better understand euphemism and make good use of them in real communication.     

A Functional-Equivalence Approach to Two English Versions of Hao’liao’ge

The understanding of Hao’liao’ge is very important for the understanding of Hong’lou’meng so Hao’liao’ge can be said to be the key point of the whole novel.Therefore,it is necessary to pay attention to the comparative study of English translation of Hao’liao’ge in the English translation studies of Hong’lou’meng.Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory will be used to com?pare and analyze the two translations of Hao’liao’ge and explore the different translation strategies of the two translators,hoping to have some inspiration for poetry translation and give Chinese and English readers a deeper understanding of Hao’liao’ge.     

A Survey and Suggestions on Students' Vocabulary Learning Strategiesin Senior High School

This paper is about a survey and suggestion on students’vocabulary learning strategies in senior high school.Vocabulary is one of the three elements of a language and the basic material of a language.So the vocabulary learning in English is especially important.In order to help the students to have a better understanding of the significance of language and lay a solid foundation for deep vocabulary acquisition,it is necessary for teachers to find effective ways to learn English vocabulary.So in this paper the author hopes to find what the vocabulary learning strategies the students have used through the survey and give more effective learning strategies according to the available English vocabulary learning strategies.     

On Word-formation of China English Lexis

This paper introduces China English and China English lexis,and analyzes the four ways of the word-formation of China English lexis:transliteration,loan translation,loan-blend and coinage.The analysis can show that China English is used to express the language system in a special situation in China,and it has brought large number of new lexis and new vision into world Englishes,which has enhanced the expressive force of English.     

Inter-cultural Communication of Advertising Translation

Languages and cultures of different nations have their own characteristics. In order to communicate with each other, human beings must make use of the methods of translation. Thus, it shows that translation, which is a social activity of inter-language, inter-culture and inter-community, is linked closely to culture. Meanwhile, the features of translation represent similarly in advertising translation. Generally speaking, when doing advertising translation,it can not only focus on language differences between the two sides, but also pay attention to cultural differences. Or else it would be difficult to translate satisfying advertisements. By taking examples from Chinese-English and English-Chinese, this paper compares the different aspects between Chinese and Western thinking sets, traditional ideas and values in order to reflect differences of advertising translation based on different cultures. Finally, it will sum up some strategies of inter-cultural advertising translation.     

A Contrastive Study on Cultural Connotations of Chinese and English Color Terms

Both Chinese and English are rich in the words denoting different colors. Cultural connotations of these words,however,arouse more interest than their lexical meanings due to the discrepancy between the two languages deriving from the differences of the speakers’ cultural background,social customs,and aesthetic interests. Employing contrastive analysis on the two cultures wherein the two languages are nourished,this paper has made a series of contrasts between and explorations on the cultural connotations of color terms in the two languages.
