Brahmagupta, mathematician par excellence

Brahmagupta holds a unique position in the history of Ancient Indian Mathematics. He contributed such elegant results to Geometry and Number Theory that today’s mathematicians still marvel at their originality. His theorems leading to the calculation of the circumradius of a triangle and the lengths of the diagonals of a cyclic quadrilateral, construction of a rational cyclic quadrilateral and integer solutions to a single second degree equation are certainly the hallmarks of a genius.     

A view of Newton as a mathematician

In this article, we present certain topics such as quadrature of planar regions, introduced prior to the invention of calculus by Newton, and consider his other mathematical contributions, to binomial theorem and infinite series, cubics, theory of equations and imaginary roots. As the development of calculus and its enormous applications are well known, we will not discuss much about it. Earlier, he was in TIFR, Bangalore. His research interests include partial differential equations, homogenization, controllability and control problems, analysis, etc.

Is one proof enough? Travels with a mathematician of the baroque period

It is reasonable to assume that a subject of presumably universal appeal must rely on just one style. In spite of its universality, mathematics employs many styles. In particular, there are many styles of proof. In this paper we present and analyse a number of proofs of a property of the area under an hyperbola due to Gregory of Saint-Vincent, a mathematician of the first half of the seventeenth century. There is a baroque and prolific quality to the architecture of his proofs, and this quality points to a connection between a culture and the discovery of a mathematical theory. An historical perspective shows that, in addition to many styles, the universality of mathematics implies a variety of procedures.This work was carried out during a period as guest professor at the Institut de physique théorique, Université de Louvain.

The paper examines the ways in which group work teachers deal with students understanding of the complexities of group work, while they support students acquisition of practice skills with groups. The students' ability to acquire skills in working with groups, and demonstrate them will vary greatly. Principles and techniques used in teaching group work should reflect these variations. Specific and concrete ways that instructors may use to individualize their approaches in teaching and communicating are presented. These principles and techniques also are relevant for teaching other social work practice methods.     

北石窟寺地下水与石窟岩体潮湿渗水的关系及地下水治理措施

本文通过对庆阳北石窟寺地层岩性地质构造和水文地质特征的分析,认为受窟前二级阶地阻挡和岩层斜层理向山倾影响,排泄不畅的地下基岩裂隙水,是北石窟寺洞窟岩体潮湿、渗水的重要原因之一,也是窟内空气湿度大,形成凝结水的原因之一.在此基础上提出了地下水治理措施,并对北石窟寺地下水治理工程作了介绍.

情感是人性的一个基本方面,也是人类建构文化的基点,情感价值是人类文化的首选价值。传统文化是以情感为主体的文化,艺术是传统文化中最具情感性的文化,是文化的原生形态。然而,情感文化并不能为人类征服世界的本能意志提供支持,理性文化成为文化的主体是必然的,因此艺术的衰落也是必然的。但并不能因此就认为艺术会必然死亡,只要情感存在着,艺术就必然存在着。
