Commentators discuss the merits of the article "Developing a Family Centered, Hospital-Based Perinatal Education Program" [Journal of Perinatal Education, 9(4), 28-39]. They also point out the challenges of developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive, family-centered perinatal education program in urban and rural hospitals.

Perinatal Education and Grandparenting: Creating an Interdependent Family Environment. Part I: Documenting the Need

This is the first of two articles on the development, implementation, and evaluation of a grandparenting perinatal education program. In part one, a review of the literature is presented, along with the planned content and objectives for the program.     

OLD AGE AND LITERATURE: AN OVERVIEW

Rural hospitals face difficult times as Medicare health insurance threatens their survival. A small community in Polk County, North Carolina, developed a program that was designed to take advantage of the Medicare skilled nursing benefit as a payment source and which can be implemented by any rural hospital that has Medicare-certified swing beds or distinct nursing facilities. This program involves the development of a special unit, the Restorative Care Unit (RCU), which provides subacute care to older adults. A major element in the RCU care system is a highly structured continuing education program for hospital staff. The continuing education component trains personnel to implement and manage the RCU care system using a team approach. The Appalachian Geriatric Education Center Consortium recognized the need for dissemination of this model of service. They took the concept, developed a curriculum and implemented it with eight rural hospitals. The purpose of this article is to describe in detail the RCU care system continuing education element, and present results from a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the program. The stages of the development of the program are described, in addition to the content of the curriculum.

师范生教育实践能力培养与教育实习课程改革研究

教育实习是教师教育课程体系的重要组成部分,具有多元教育价值。教育实习课程存在目的不明,组织管理方式不够完善,实习生的课堂教学时间极为有限,教育实习投入不足等问题。究其原因,在于缺乏对实践性知识的价值及获得途径的准确把握,教师教育尚未形成完整的课程体系,未能将教育实习工作和中学的发展通盘考虑等。基于此,要探索多样化的教育实习方式与途径,切实加大教师教育课程体系中实践类课程的比重,体现教育理论的实践性特征,密切与中学的伙伴关系。

The field of childbirth education has been slowly expanding its base to that of perinatal education over the last decades. This is a call to define the scope of a comprehensive perinatal education program and the skills of a perinatal educator.     

The implementation of counsellor training in the Netherlands and its effects: An analysis of educational policy

The development of a counsellor education program and the implementation and dissemination of counselling services in Dutch schools is treated in this article as an example of educational innovation in a country with a centralized system of decision-making in educational matters. Advantages and disadvantages of the pivotal role of the government in the determination of educational policy are discussed with respect to the counselling movement.     

Because every pupil counts: the success of the pupil monitoring system in The Netherlands

The National Institute for Educational Measurement in The Netherlands has developed a pupil monitoring system for primary education to assess pupils' learning progress on a longitudinal basis. If pupil development is unsatisfactory, pupil monitoring system material can be used to locate and tackle the problems. This article describes the system, the set-up of the longitudinal calibration, the psychometrics used and the educational procedure for structured action. The pupil monitoring system comes with a software program and this article also explains the possibilities of the program, the information it provides to the teacher and school, the role of the computer and the advantages of working with the program. Experience of working with the system is discussed as well as the modifications and improvements that may be necessary in the future     

应对挑战,增强高校德育的实效性

社会的发展变化在为高校德育提供机遇的同时，也带来了严峻的挑战。西方意识形态的渗透、市场经济体制的负面影响、互联网的冲击、高教体制的改革都对高校德育提出了挑战。对此，高校德育必须采取措施，积极应对。通过加强队伍建设，转变德育观念，充实德育内容，创新德育方法来增强高校德育的实效性。     

Breastfeeding Attitudes of WIC Staff: A Descriptive Study

A sample of staff members from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC program) were interviewed about breastfeeding and their perceptions of WIC recipients' views on breastfeeding. WIC staff members universally supported breastfeeding and expressed desires for more linkages between WIC agencies and perinatal education specialists in childbirth education classes, as well as with mothers during their postpartum hospital stay. The WIC staff members in this study reported on a variety of beliefs about breastfeeding held by their WIC clients, including cultural beliefs, the importance of family support, and experiences of pain during breastfeeding.     

论研究本位教师教育及其理念

研究本位教师教育中学习项目是动态的,根据动态的教育结构而定,所有的教学均以研究为基础,组织活动提供学生在探究和解决教学问题时实践、讨论、决策制定和解释机会。研究本位教师教育对我国教师教育范式的开发和实践具有借鉴意义。     

Compromise in Collaborating With Families: Perspectives of Beginning Special Education Teachers

This qualitative study evaluated the belief systems and professional practice of program graduates of an early childhood special education teacher preparation program regarding collaboration with families of children with disabilities. Eleven graduates were interviewed over the course of a school year to identify perceived challenges to their implementation of family-centered practices on the job. Results revealed that (a) underpreparation, (b) attitudinal barriers, (c) workload issues, and (d) language and cultural differences inhibited teachers' collaboration with families of children with disabilities. Implications concerning the role and challenges of teacher preparation and the importance of job design for early childhood teachers are addressed.     

Social responsibility and community development: Lessons from the Sistema de Aprendizaje Tutorial in Honduras

This article extends understanding of the connections between education, social capital, and development through a mixed-methods case study of the Sistema de Aprendizaje Tutorial, or SAT¹, an innovative secondary-level education system. The quantitative dimension of the research used survey measures of social responsibility to compare 93 SAT students to 88 other students in conventional Honduran schools, with samples based on the naturally occurring (non-random) presence of one of these two different educational programs in each of nine nearby Honduran communities. Preliminary findings suggest that students in the SAT program held a greater sense of social responsibility than their peers in conventional schools. Students’ statements about their own educational experiences were analyzed in order to identify some of the characteristics of the SAT program that may have led to this difference. The SAT approach to developing social responsibility is contrasted to a human rights focused approach.

Evaluation of Food Protection and Defense Outreach Education Programs

ABSTRACT: This analysis documents the outcomes and impacts from a series of food protection and defense educational programs conducted over a 3‐y period for private and public sector food system professionals. Several measures were used to determine the professions of participants; their improvements in skills and abilities that resulted from workshops; the audiences' most valued program content; practice changes resulting from educational program participation; abilities to recognize and change food system vulnerabilities; and changes in knowledge levels. Findings indicate that the knowledge level and interest within the target audience progressed over the 3‐y period from basic awareness level through more complex and higher order skills and competencies such as being able to walk through a food production, processing, distribution, or retail facility and identify specific vulnerabilities and make specific risk control recommendations. Pre‐ and posttest scores from the 3rd y of educational activities indicate that baseline awareness levels of core content on food protection and defense is now high among those most likely to attend these types of events, and that participants need to be challenged with additional higher‐level education to promote specific skills. This program series proved successful in building important relationships among food industry and regulatory partners. Analysis of the food security investigation (FSI) series will be useful in the development and delivery of new education and outreach efforts. It is hoped that the analysis and discussion will provide the motivation to further develop a set of competencies that can be used to ground educational efforts that focus on securing and defending our food system.
