PREDICTING THE RETENTION OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS   总被引:7,自引:1,他引:6  
Survival analysis was used to model theretention of 8,867 undergraduate students at OregonState University between 1991 and 1996. Attrition wasfound to increase with age, and decrease with increasing high school GPA and first-quarter GPA.Non-residents had higher attrition rates than didresident and international students, and students takingthe Freshman Orientation Course appeared to be atreduced risk of dropping out. Statistically significantassociations of retention with ethnicity/race andcollege at first enrollment were also noted. Aproportional hazards regression model was developed topredict a student's probability of leaving school basedon these demographic and academic variables. Theseanalyses are helping to guide the university's effortsto improve retention through marketing, recruitment, and the development of orientation and otherprograms.  相似文献

Recently, March, Hooper, and Baum (1977) described a sample of 99 nonstudent elders in terms of their demographic characteristics and their attitudes toward lifelong learning. The sample was found to be well‐educated (mean years of education = 13.61, SD = 9.43), active in the community, well‐read, and fairly affluent. The majority demonstrated a quite open attitude toward the appropriateness of formal education in old age, but also felt that learning can be acquired outside the classroom: “living is learning.”

The present study was undertaken to similarly describe a sample of elderly people enrolled in the University of Wisconsin guest student program, and to contrast these respondents with those in the earlier study. The student group was found to be significantly younger than the nonstudent group (mean = 70.78, SD = 7.21 vs. mean = 74.69, SD = 8.45; t = 2.87, p < .001). Although there is no difference in the mean years of education of the two groups, there is significantly greater variability in years of education in the student group (F = 10.98, p < .001), with 50.4% of the nonstudent group versus 21.6% of the student group having 12 years of education or less. Additionally, it was found that only 10 of the 139 student respondents did not have either personal or vicarious personal (through familial significant others) experience with higher education in youth.

The respondents’ stated preference for class format and student group age is also summarized, and some implications for educational gerontology are discussed.  相似文献

为增进高师学生心理健康并有针对性地开展心理健康教育工作 ,用自编的《大学生应激生活事件量表》对广西师范大学 4 15名学生进行了调查。结果表明 ,排在前 10位的应激生活事件主要来自学习因素、个人因素、学校因素、就业因素、家庭因素和社会因素等方面。其中 ,来自人际交往方面的应激事件对男生的影响显著高于对女生的影响 (P<0 .0 5 ) ;来自学习方面的应激生活事件对不同年级学生的影响有显著差异(P<0 .0 5 ) ;来自学校方面的应激生活事件对不同年级学生的影响有显著性差异 (P<0 .0 0 1) ;来自就业方面的应激生活对不同年级学生的影响有极显著差异 (P<0 .0 1)  相似文献

To ensure Jewish continuity, Jewish education must become minority education, heightening a Jew's sense of being different from other groups in American society. This approach runs counter to classic Jewish striving for acceptance in the majority culture, but it responds to other minorities’ relating to Jews as part of that majority. Such an approach is warranted on sociological and theological grounds and emphasizes commands and customs which reassert ethnic identity: food, festivals, fashion, and family. While this approach is likely to succeed, it runs the risk of engendering chauvinism. That risk may be reduced by a strategy of “transcending nested contradictions.”

Registrars of the junior and four year colleges and universities of the university system of Georgia were asked to supply the names and addresses of elderly students attending their institutions under a state constitutional amendment that provides for free tuition on a space available basis for residents 62 years of age or older. Names were obtained from six junior colleges, eight senior colleges, and one university. Elderly students were asked to complete a form to determine their problems with and attitudes toward college study; 70 responses were received.

Analysis of the responses indicated that the 70 elderly students were above average in education and that they were vigorous and active. Only a few had encountered difficulty in adjusting to college study. A few had difficulty in hearing classroom discussions. Approximately 90% felt that attending classes was stimulating and would recommend the experience to other elderly adults. As a group they felt accepted by faculty and younger students. In common with other students, some found problems in parking. Generally, however, the study reveals that many senior citizens can be accommodated in the typical college classroom without major curricular and administrative adjustments.  相似文献

This article describes an online course developed and currently offered at Middle Tennessee State University. Considering the statistics of family caregivers, their needs, and students’ and human service professionals’ education, the author demonstrates the necessity of such courses and their benefits. The author also considers the standards for online Social Work education. Because there are more than 54 million family caregivers providing 80% of all home health care, recommendations for further study into caregiving courses, their content, and usefulness are given. The article includes student testimonials, course objectives, and links to course websites and the WebCT system that provides the course's platform.  相似文献

The validity of Palestinian university students’ responses was examined to determine if sex, academic status, perception, or expected grade in the course was influential in biasing their judgement regarding the performance of their instructors. The results of the study revealed that not only Palestinian university students’ responses showed great consistency, but that their sex, academic status, and expected grade in the course did not play significant roles in the determination of their judgement. The results are discussed in terms of their importance to university personnel in the Arab World and other Third‐World countries, with a particular emphasis on the need to establish and follow standard procedures in student evaluations of their instructors.  相似文献

The regression equations for second quarter freshman grade point averages on SAT scores were calculated for Anglo-American and Mexican-American students at the University of California, Riverside. These regression equations differed significantly for the two groups. However, the use of the regression equation derived from the Anglo-American sample to predict grades of Mexican-American students resulted in overprediction. An examination of the standardized regression weights revealed a significant difference in the weight given to SATM. A replication on a much larger sample revealed a similar outcome. These results were considered as a possible heuristic to suggest a scholastic "'strategy" difference between the two ethnic groups.  相似文献

Students were randomly chosen from the class of 1998 and 1999 at a large public university. Fifty in each class were community college transfer students who transferred to the university in the fall of 1996 and fall of 1997; 50 in each class were native students who had entered the university in the fall of 1994 and the fall of 1995. All students were from the College of Arts and Sciences. These groups of students were compared by GPAs at the end of the lower division work (sophomore year for natives and at the end of the second year of community college work for transfers). Students also were compared at the end of their first semester in their academic major to determine if transfer shock was evident for transfer students and if a GPA decline was evident for natives. Lastly, the students GPAs were compared at the end of the spring semesters of 1998 and 1999 to determine if there was recovery from transfer shock for the transfers and from the possible decline in GPA for native students. Retention and graduation rates for both groups were compared.  相似文献
