A Data Architecture for Library Collections

The current ad-hoc, organically grown system of digital library inventory management is inefficient, ineffective, and costly, both in dollar terms and in the time and effort of librarians and users. UConn is building a data architecture framework that is integrated in a larger concept of how library data is acquired, managed, and delivered. Collection development policy, data architecture, and information architecture combine to create a strategic framework for collections-based library activities.

数字人文是数字图书馆建设的趋势,由于图书馆的社会性和图书馆作为知识保存与传播中心的职能,数据开放是图书馆尤其是公共图书馆的使命。有着规范化、标准化结构和语义的数据是图书馆为研究人员提供数字人文服务的基础,也是在互联网上为第三方开发人员提供开放数据服务的基础。本文从内容、平台、服务三个方面入手,调研与借鉴海外成熟案例,提出以平台为基础支撑,内容、服务模式为核心的面向数字人文的图书馆开放数据服务框架,并以上海图书馆的开放数据应用开发竞赛为例,试图为国内图书馆界提供具有实际可行性的实现方案和实施案例。

Library Reference Collections in Home Economics:

Due in large part to the interdisciplinary nature of the profession, Home Economics reference collections are often difficult to develop, maintain, and assess. Collection development responsibilities are usually divided among several librarians across the broad spectrum of the social sciences, humanities, and applies sciences. To help ensure basic and balanced collections, a "core" bibliography of home economics reference sources is provided. The included works are listed alphabetically under the broad categories of "Indexes and Abstracts," "Dictionaries and Encyclopedias," and "Handbooks and Sourcebooks." This bibliography should be used as a starting framework for a basic home economics reference collection. Individual libraries might further develop specific subject areas to support their own institution's needs.     

Evaluating Research Library Collections in Psychology:

By 1986, all of the University of California (U.C.) Campus Libraries as well as the Stanford University Libraries had completed the Psychology Conspectus as part of the North American Collections Inventory Project (NCIP). Phase I. Between 1986 and 1988, they participated in a "pilot" project which was designed to further review, analyze and explore possibilities for coordinating policy in the subject area of psychology. The article is a recounting of some issues and problems encountered in this attempt.

Education Collections as Museum Collections

Museum education collections are inarguably a part of a museum's actual collection, just as are the research/permanent collections. However, past practices indicate that education collections are typically not given equal stature in museological terms. This paper argues that techniques and practices used with research/permanent collections should be applied to education collections, a viewpoint that has not yet been readily embraced. Several methods are addressed for upgrading an education collection to a level similar to a museum's permanent collection. The Lubbock Lake Landmark's education collection serves as a case study to demonstrate the need for the application of proper museological techniques to conform to best practices. A scope of collection was created, preventive conservation techniques were applied, a gap analysis was performed, and legal issues concerning the education collection were addressed.

Career Resources in Library Collections

Because of the changing nature of the workplace, better access to career information should be more easily available to all types of workers. Public and academic libraries are being expected to provide career information to library patrons. This chapter suggests the type of materials which should be in a library's collection, as well as specific titles which are likely to be most useful to library users.     

Historical Fabrications in Library Collections

Disputed or even fraudulent works of history can make their way onto library shelves; patrons who find them there are likely to regard them as true. Because historical fabrications can be hard to identify, they are sometimes widely owned, nationally or regionally. The ambiguous nature of both book reviews and cataloging records can make it difficult for librarians to detect such books. To try to find and label all of them is impractical; the best way to serve patrons is through the careful selection of works for collections whose breadth and depth will allow patrons to discover inconsistencies and disputed writings on their own.

The ILS as Outreach: Cataloging Campus Partner Collections

Although libraries tend to see the integrated library system (ILS) as a very “library” system, it is actually a powerful inventory and patron management system that can be used much more broadly. At American University, the library has many campus partner collections that it has added to the library catalog. Some collections contain books and media, like traditional library holdings, and some are made up of audiovisual and computer equipment. This article describes the process of cataloging these collections, the challenges of conceiving the ILS as a campus-wide system, and the benefits that these partnerships have brought to the library.
