The Blended Business Librarian: Technology Skills in Academic Business Librarian Job Advertisements

The purpose of this study was to identify technological trends in academic business librarianship. Forty-five job advertisements were collected over a 5-year period spanning from 2007 to 2012. Ten technology skill categories were identified, and the frequency at which the skills appeared in the job advertisements was measured. This article also includes a discussion about the impact of technology on business librarianship and recommendations for academic business librarians and employers.

The Serials Librarian

ABSTRACT

Since 1976 The Serials Librarian has provided librarians and others associated with the production and dissemination of serials with scholarly investigations exploring numerous aspects of managing the complex nature of serials as a form of communication. This essay examines the nature of all articles published between 1976 and 2004 and categorizes them by topic, gender, and author affiliation.     

The Entrepreneurial Librarian

The author describes her career as an independent information broker, the roblems a librarian faces in running an information business, and how the information broker fits into the traditional information services spectrum. Useful qualities for the aspiring information broker are outlined.     

The Andragogical Librarian

Summary

Andragogy is the art and science of helping adults learn. This article explores the foundations of adult learning theory, as well as current thought and practice. With special emphasis on Malcolm Knowles' Basic Assumptions of Andragogy, the article presents the learning needs and characteristics of the adult library user. These characteristics include: a psychological need to be self-directed; a preference for experiential learning; a desire and readiness to learn practical life applications; and a desire to grow and self-actualize. A discussion follows of the implications for providing more effective reference service and library instruction to adults.     

The Researching Librarian

In reflective practice, librarians think back on their instruction to improve it, and this study addresses guidance provided for reflection on citation management instruction. We refined a previously developed reflective practice template for citation management instruction by asking instructors to critique the template’s set of reflective prompts. This survey also elicited the instructors’ suggestions for new reflective practice prompts. Forty-one librarians in the United States participated in the survey. Their responses allowed us to improve the prior reflective practice template.

The Librarian as Mediator

This paper examines various aspects of librarianship in order to illustrate that the profession is one that requires the techniques of mediation. Both librarianship and mediation are crafts guided by and furthering the interests of democratic society. The concern of librarians with intellectual freedom and literacy is examined as it encompasses the challenges of homelessness and multiculturalism. These issues call upon librarians to mediate, and to do so dynamically because of changes in library theory, methods, and technology. Librarians mediate between clients and with themselves. Mediation is required in bibliographic selection and for every library policy. It is hoped that readers of this paper will imagine many other aspects of librarianship that are furthered by effective mediation.

The Developing Reference Librarian:

The learning of librarians continues beyond the awarding of the MLS. Continuing professional development is necessary for librarians to anticipate and position themselves for the changing information field and changing client needs. Practitioners on all organizational levels must recognize and support the importance of this activity. Administrators are accountable for providing clear institutional values and job expectations, and for creating an environment and incentives that nurture professional development. Librarians have the individual responsibility to recognize personal strengths and developmental needs, to realistically assess career changes and educational opportunities, and to contribute to the professional development of their colleagues throughout the profession.
