Collecting the Revolution: New Directions in Research

ABSTRACT

This essay reports on the latest efforts to assess the collections of materials relating to the Russian Revolution held in the Hoover Institution and the New York Public Library (NYPL). The first section reviews the presentations made by Bertrand Patenaude, Michael Herrick, and Robert Davis during the roundtable “Collecting the Revolution” at the annual meeting of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies in November 2017. The second presents additional information documenting the development of NYPL’s and Hoover’s collections located in The Wisconsin State Historical Society Archive and the Archive of the Russian State Library.

ABSTRACT

The paper summarizes the ninth annual conference of the Russian Library Association in May 2004. Included are the exhibits, several plenary addresses, the work of the Bibliography Section, and election results.     

Research and Development Work at the Russian Book Chamber: Results and Prospects

ABSTRACT

The Russian Book Chamber (RBC, Rossiiskaia knizhnaia palata) is Russia's national bibliographic center. In addition to compiling the many series of the national bibliography, it also publishes two scholarly journals and prepares periodic reports about book publishing and distribution in Russia as a whole and in her separate regions. The RBC has been undergoing many changes, including modernizing its telecommunication infrastructure, updating its capability to provide information in electronic format, setting standards, working with other agencies to prevent piracy, redistributing responsibilities between itself and the regional book chambers, creating bibliographical formats compatible with those of other countries, etc.     

The Central Eurasian Interactive Atlas Project: A Progress Report

SUMMARY

Since 2000, researchers and staff at the University of Washington have been developing a unified Geographic Information Systems database of Russian Federation socioeconomic, demographic, and political information at the raion and city (gorsovet) level. The Central Eurasian Interactive Atlas (CEIA) that has grown from this effort serves both to archive and to provide access to annual progressions of standardized geographic and tabular data covering the entire Russian Federation at a level of geographic detail not readily available elsewhere. As the CEIA grows, it will serve as a curricular and research focus of the UW's Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies program.

Developing an Electronic Collection

ABSTRACT

The Internet has had a profound impact on the way people access and use information, especially in the area of monitoring and protecting human rights. This article reviews the development of the University of Minnesota Human Rights Library, one of the largest collections of human rights documents available on the web. The focus is on how the collection was built, how it is used to support research and teaching, and how it is maintained. Many of the issues examined in this article are relevant to the development, maintenance, and use of any electronic collection.     

The Availability of Faculty Publication Databases from Library Web Pages

Abstract

Faculty publication databases or author bibliographies offer libraries an opportunity to provide services to users. Initially, these databases remained initiatives of special libraries in the health-sciences fields. Librarians used the publication information derived from these databases to compile lists for annual reports. However, the advent of new technologies, especially the Web, prompted numerous libraries to develop faculty publication databases for their institutions. The author conducted a survey of various listservs to discover the history and development of these databases. The results illustrate the popularity of Web-based faculty publication databases. The motivation for their creation varied, but most respondents emphasized the desire to highlight the research activities of their institutions. In addition, the content of materials included in the databases and the definition of faculty also varied, depending on the type of library. Librarians reported a wide range of software employed in the development of these databases highlighting their creation by librarians with various levels of programming skills. Moreover, additional features included in these projects underscore the potential for librarians to provide added value from this service. Finally, while institutional repositories seemingly present similar content, publication databases differ in their focus on a citation format that offers a solution to items without copyright permission for full-text accessibility.

A unique American judiciary for the Panama Canal Zone existed in various forms from 1904 to 1982. The following is a bibliographic essay concentrating on the courts as they existed prior to 1914.     

Vietnamese Law

Abstract

This bibliography is designed to assist students and scholars of both the history and contemporary features of the Vietnamese legal system. In particular, it takes a broad view of the interconnectedness of law and society. The result of positioning law and society as mutually reflective is that the bibliography includes materials shedding light on Vietnamese history, politics, culture and social and economic development. Although it does not offer an exhaustive listing on these wider issues, it equips the researcher to explore these issues as a corollary of legal research.

SUMMARY

Electronic resources are one of the last collections in a public library to receive attention for usage and for promotions. Oftentimes their statistics go unnoticed as well. An effort is needed to consciously study, track, and evaluate the usage of these resources. Then a library can focus on educating the staff and patrons regarding the existence and use of these resources. This paper details the steps involved in initiating, conducting, and financing a marketing campaign for education and promotion of electronic resources for a public library.     

Personal Papers of Russian Émigrés in the United States in the State Archive of the Russian Federation

SUMMARY

This article discusses the repatriation of émigré archives to the Russian Federation and the significance of this phenomenon in Russian cultural life. Particular attention is paid to six archival collections acquired by the State Archive of the Russian Federation in the 1990s.     

Academic Digital Libraries Russian Style: An Introduction to The Fundamental Digital Library of Russian Literature and Folklore

SUMMARY

This article provides an overview of The Fundamental Digital Library of Russian Literature and Folklore (FEB-web). The intersection of philology and information technologies at FEB-web is considered in the context of Russian culture and the Russian academy. Topics discussed include: the FEB-web process for creating digital scholarly editions, the structure of FEB-web, new developments in the FEB-web collections, plans for the future, copyright issues, digitization processes, inter-library cooperation, and the place of digital libraries in constructing civil society in Russia.

Pre-Revolutionary Russian Photography at the New York Public Library: An Introduction

ABSTRACT

This article is an introduction to the New York Public Library’s pre-revolutionary Russian and Eastern European photographic albums. It also provides a checklist of these albums. The checklist is an especially rich source for Russian architecture, art, and science and provides documentation for a variety of places in the center and provinces of the Russian Empire. Some of the most significant albums are those once owned by the Romanovs and by George Kennan the elder, America’s first Russian expert.     

Russian Publishers,the Media,and Government Interference in 2002: A Report to the Slavic Librarians' Workshop,University of Illinois,July 2003

ABSTRACT

During 2002 the Russian publishing industry and news media were under intense scrutiny, sometimes verging on assault, by government and pro-government groups. A new 20% value-added tax was an additional blow, although it was reduced to 10% in the middle of the year. Russian publishing appears to be healthy in spite of those problems, although statistics from the Russian Book Chamber (Rossiiskaia knizhnaia palata) are notoriously unreliable. Statistics on books carried by Russian Press Service give an approximate picture of scholarly book publishing.

The Cultural Legacy and Libraries in Russian Legal Space

ABSTRACT

The author discusses federal laws that relate to Russian libraries and demonstrates the need for legislation to protect the physical condition of collections, particularly special collections (rare material, deposit collections, etc.). A working group from the Historical Library has drafted a proposed law, called Regulation for the Use of Special Collections Materials in Libraries of the Russian Federation.
