Intro to Archival Science: Developing an Undergraduate Archival Elective Outside of a LIS Program

Abstract

This case study describes the development and implementation of a three-credit undergraduate archival science course at Mount St. Mary’s University. Offered through the university’s Department of History, this course was designed to prepare students for positions in archives-related careers, unlike most research-based undergraduate archival electives. Benefits of the course to both students and the archivist profession will be discussed.     

Working at a Joint-Use Library

ABSTRACT

The St. Lucie West Library, also known as the FAU Treasure Coast Campus Library, is a joint-use library facility, with Florida Atlantic University partnering with Indian River Community College and the St. Lucie County (FL) Library System. This article will discuss the circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loan, and collection management services of the three partners, as well as the training of new employees in this joint-use venture and the methods of managing the St. Lucie West Library. A list of suggestions for improving present and future joint-use libraries is included.

The modern problems of the development of information services in Russia and abroad are considered from the standpoint of information management. The experience of the information management department of the St. Petersburg University of Culture and Arts is described.     

News framing of the U.S. immigration debate during election years: Focus on generic frames

This study examined the frames used in the news coverage of the U.S. immigration debate during election years. Stories from four major U.S. newspapers, the Los Angeles Times, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the St. Petersburg Times, and The New York Times, were content analyzed. The analysis revealed that the conflict frame was the most dominant frame in the news coverage of the U.S. immigration debate whereas no significant changes in the framing of the U.S. immigration debate were found over time. The human interest frame was more likely to have a pro-immigration tone compared to other frames. The findings of immigrant characteristics showed that the “illegal” characteristic was the most frequently used to identify immigrants.

“Art Girls”: Philanthropy,Corporate Sponsorship,and Private Art Museums in Post‐Communist Russia

Russian art sponsorship is dominated by women of the oligarch elite. Rather than dismissing this phenomenon as a faddish diversion of new money, this article takes a broader perspective on the motivations of these “art girls” along a trajectory of Russian women's involvement in patronage, philanthropy, and sponsorship extending back to the late eighteenth century. It considers how socio‐political circumstances have shaped philanthropy directed at the arts in Russia, and uses interviews to explore the reasons behind this recent focus on the contemporary in the sponsorship of exhibitions, art centers, and private museums in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Siberia.     

The safe,cheap and known: A content analysis of the first (1974) PBS program cooperative

With continued austerity in programming (and all other) budget categories, something has to give in the world of national public television programs—and here the authors support their contention that innovative, controversial, minority interest, and just plain esoteric programs are not chosen when placed up against what Natan Katzman terms “the safe, cheap and the known” programs. Expense is the excuse—but not always the reason for such choices. Mr. Reeves is a masters candidate in meteorology and mass communication (and a weatherman for WTVT television, St. Petersburg) while Dr. Hoffer is chairman of the department of mass communication, both of Florida State University.     

The Aesthetics of the Internet in St. Petersburg: Why Metaphor Matters

This article proposes that the metaphors with which people imagine the Internet are more central to its political constitution than might at first be supposed. Instead of focusing on discourses of whether the Internet is a progressive force, a capitalist or anticapitalist space, digital commons or artifact of controlled interests, this article shows that metaphors of social relations themselves frame the politicization of the Internet. The way social actors are conceptualized in turn informs the senses in which a technology could be considered an object of political constitution, and the senses in which policy is a relevant mode of social engagement. An ethnographic account of uses of the Internet in St. Petersburg, Russia is presented with a view to framing Western metaphors of sociality.     

Jubilee Conference in Honor of the Eighty-Fifth Anniversary of the Russian Book Chamber

ABSTRACT

The jubilee conference in honor of the 85th anniversary of the Russian Book Chamber (RBC) consisted of three parts: the 10th International Conference on Issues of Bibliology, a conference of the Association of Book Chambers, and a ceremonial session. The bibliology conference, the most important part, included discussion of such pressing problems as the decline of reading and book-buying in Russia, the difficulty of distributing books outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg, and the problems caused by lack of modern equipment in printing establishments. But progress has also been made, e.g., the RBC's establishment of a single information platform for all participants in the book trade.

On the available sources of information on the libraries of A.P. Volynskii and his adherents: Information on the libraries and their entrance into the library of the academy of sciences

This paper describes information on the libraries of A.P. Volynskii and his adherents, which was gained from interactive sources and some printed publications. It reveals the disagreement in the data from the chronicle of the LAS and other information sources, as well as that between different printed and electronic sources. Web sites, electronic copies of books by S.A. Belokurov, D.A. Korsakov, and V.S. Ikonnikov, the fourth volume of Materials on the History of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, electronic documents, and indices of stocks for the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts and the St. Petersburg Department of the Archive of the RAS were used as information sources from the Internet. A part of the cited data was obtained using the ??Search for Books. Browsing a Fragment?? Google DB subsystem.     

Killing a culture softly: Corporate partnership with a Russian museum

Information communications technology provides a way on the World Wide Web for national museums to represent the cultural artefacts they house. Framed by the notion of cybercolonization, a colonizing of cultures and cultural institutions by computing ideas, this on-site case study of the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia examines computing ideas shaping information communications technology developments within the museum and, particularly, its current IBM sponsored website 〈http://www.hermitagemuseum.org/〉. The paper will illuminate subtle cybercolonizing influences by Global IBM evident in the website structure, design, targeting, esthetic choices, cultural content realignment, IBM corporate e-business underlay, and American English branding. The notion of cyberglocalization, an adapting of global cyber processes to local circumstances, is offered as an avenue to address colonization present in the Hermitage-IBM website. The case study offers museum professionals an illustration of the underlying assumptions about information communications technology (ICT) ideas, interaction, and appearance in the development of museum websites.

文章通过评述《北京大学图书馆九十年记略》、《百年清华图书馆》等已编馆史著述,指出北京大学和清华大学图书馆馆史的先后问世,奠立了"盛世办盛典,馆庆修馆史"的新时代馆庆活动范式,而一部理想的馆史,不但具有编书存史、资业育人、总结经验和教训的历史价值,而且具有表率群馆、楷模业内、进行馆史传统教育的现实意义。     

St. Louis Public Library Employee Scholarship Program

ABSTRACT

The text of a successful employee scholarship program policy at the St. Louis Public Library is presented in this article. The policy covers rationale, application and renewal procedures, content and degrees covered, levels of financial support, approval and disapproval process, appeal procedure if application denied, work time and monetary repayment options, for single classes and associate's degrees along with Bachelor's and MLS degrees as well.     

安徽师范大学图书馆藏盛宣怀“愚斋图书”探析

盛宣怀是清末大官僚大买办,别号愚斋,他所收藏的图书称为愚斋藏书。盛氏本着＂贻之子孙,不如公之同好＂的心愿创办愚斋图书馆,却未能如愿。盛氏死后,愚斋藏书由其后人分别捐赠给上海的圣约翰大学、南洋公学和山西铭贤学校,其中上海交通大学（前身为南洋公学）当年所得的577种图书于解放后全国高校院系调整时调拨给了合肥师范学院,即安徽师范大学的前身。文章旨在向学界同仁介绍安徽师范大学图书馆所藏的愚斋图书状况,期有抛砖引玉之用。     

The Russian Orthodox Church and Russian Emigration as Documented in the Archives of the Western American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church outside of Russia

ABSTRACT

Among the extensive archives of the Western American Diocese of the ROCOR (over 2,000 document files), of greatest historical value are undoubtedly the archives of St. John (Maximovich) and of Archbishop Tikhon (Troitskii), the archives of the Russian spiritual mission in China, the archives from the Archbishops and Ecumenical Councils of the ROCOR, and the archives of the oldest clerics and parishes of the ROCOR. Also, the correspondence and labors of Bishop Nektarii (Kontsevich) and Archbishop Antonii (Medvedev) are of considerable significance for historians. In archives is hidden the potential for many research projects, for historians and linguists alike. Some documents have been researched, translated and published in the Diocesan Russian–English magazine, Spiritual Spring Journal. However, the majority of these unique materials are waiting for its researchers.     

Is information ambivalent or monosubstantival? (Instead of a Review)

The monograph by A.V Sokolov “The Philosophy of Information” (St. Petersburg, 2010) is reviewed, which is dedicated to the conceptualization of information as one of the philosophical categories. Doubts are expressed about the legitimacy of the author’s treatment of the phenomenon of information from the perspective of dualistic monism recognizing the existence of a substance with two opposite “hypostases,” which cannot be reduced to one another, namely, about the author’s statement that the nature of information is neither ideal nor material but ambivalent, i.e., it is an indissoluble unity of the material (in this case, the carrier) and ideal (meaning) principles. This doubt is based on the premise that the ideal is not an independent substance, along with the material, but is just one form of existence of matter. Therefore, in our review it is proposed to treat information not as an element of ambivalence that belongs to the two principles of substantival, which is characteristic of dualism, but as an element of a monosubstantival principle, as a type of matter.
