As the first African American woman winner of the Nobel Prize for literature,Toni Morrison is the most outstanding African-American woman author of the 20th century and the brightest star in contemporary African-American literary arena.Toni Morrison is a voluminous writer and she has published nine novels up to the present.Since 1980,her works have been getting more and more widespread attention from literary critics of the world since 1980s.The topic of postcolonialism has been the one of the focuses of Morrison’ s novels.This paper is a literature review of Toni Morrison and postcolonialism in her works including the following points:a brief introduction to Morrison and her works,the research on Morrison,the post colonial theory and postcolonialism in Morrison’ s works.     

An Analysis of Pecola’s Tragic Fate in The Bluest Eye

In The Bluest Eye,the author narrates a little black girl’s strong desire to have blue eyes.At last,Pecola imagines possessing blue eyes at the cost of going insane.This paper mainly argues that it is the family’s influence,the internalized racism and the whites’powerful and dominant culture that leads to Pecola’s tragic fate.     

Miniature of The Bluest Eye—A Stylistic Approach to the First Fragment

Morrison’s The Bluest Eye begins with a fragment—a triply-repeated story.In the second narration,all punctuation disappears,along with the capital letters.In the third telling,the spacing between the sentences fades,which creates a sense of incomprehensible linguistic chaos.A stylistic approach is adopted to interpret underlying meanings:insanity of the protagonist Pecola and dark sides of American society.Methodically,it is the first time that optics is employed to interpret story,and stylistics can nourish itself from natural sciences.

Assimilation and Modernity——A Case Study of Abraham Cahan’s “The Imported Bridegroom”

In the modern era, the Jewish-Americans were faced with challenges because of the assimilation and modernity environment in the US, and as a result, many of them were in a double bind—to be an assimilated American citizen or to be a traditional Jew. With his work"The Imported Bridegroom", Abraham Cahan contemplated on the subject of Jewish immigration and assimilation and he made a ground-breaking contribution to the establishment of American modernity. This paper intends to analyze Cahan’s attitudes towards assimilation and modernity and how he builds up modernity for all of the Americans. Three characters in"The Imported Bridegroom", who stand for three prototypes of modern Jewish-Americans confronting the overwhelming flood of assimilation and the duty for retaining their traditions, will be analyzed. Through the composition of this work, Cahan tried to spread the Jewish culture on the one hand, and on the other, he warned the peripheral that it was difficult to be assimilated without disasters even if they had made contribution to the formation of modernity.

A Study of Ethnocentrism and its Dysfunction in Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club
