Establishing the NCEDL (National Centre for E-learning and Distance Learning), electronic universities are some initiatives to introduce e-learning to the KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), which have led to a fast, strong, and impressive movement toward e-learning in the Kingdom. However, e-learning in Saudi Arabia is still in the early stage of its development due to many challenges of e-learning that will still have to be faced. E-learning in Saudi higher education has been examined in a number of studies. Yet, focusing on e-learning among Saudi women through the social and religious customs of society is not sufficiently examined. Therefore, this research seeks to investigate the possibilities that exist for the utilization of e-learning in the enhancement of the higher education opportunities of women in Saudi Arabia within the social customs and religious beliefs by identifying the barriers to higher education for Saudi women, the modes of e-learning that currently exist within the higher education programmes in the Saudi higher education system, how e-learning can support higher education opportunities for women in Saudi Arabia, and a successful model of e-learning to improve higher education opportunities for women in the KSA. In order to achieve the aim of this research, a pilot study was made by using a semi-structured interview as a method of data collection from Saudi females who live with their related (mahram) male in the United Kingdom and a three stage coding analysis of the grounded theory analyzing the data collected from the field to formulate a theory and a model. A primarily model was presented which described the contributions of e-learning to higher education of Saudi women. The model is presented consisting of three main categories: (1) social and religious barriers; (2) women's use of the Intemet; and (3) women's use of e-learning, as well as a number of sub-subcategories. In addition, the need to illuminate the ability of Saudi women to convert e-learning into a valuable educational achievement is demonstrated. The next stage of our research will investigate all of the issues indicated by the pilot study in order to improve the success of using e-learning for Saudi women's higher education and eventually to devise a research theory.  相似文献

It is widely acknowledged that men and women are different from each other in their individuality, value image and status, which lead to the variations in their language styles and language uses. This thesis will mainly discuss the speech differences between men and women, differences between linguistic representations of men and women, and possible explanations on language differences related to gender.By analyzing these differences,we found that the different roles men and women play as well as the different status they enjoy are the main reasons of these differences.Language and social reality are closely connected.Language not only reflects reality but also helps to construct reality. The roles women play in the society as well as their social status foredoom their discriminated "famine" language.  相似文献

Inhabited by women with male characteristics and men possessing female features, the Dunnet Landing in Sarah Orne Jewett’s masterpiece The Country of the Pointed Firs is depicted as a harmonious land of beauty, from which Jewett’s preference of androgyny is fully expressed. In this novel, androgyny is used as a means by Jewett to achieve her feministic idea of the equality between men and women and that neither of the sex has prejudice upon the other in this combination. Through a detailed textual analysis, this paper reveals the androgyny elements in this novel and discusses about the possibility of androgyny as a way out for feminism.  相似文献

George Eliot(1819-1880)is an outstanding female writer in Victorian Age.Virginia Woolf,a feminist pioneer, once praised her as"the pride and paragon of the female".However, her feminism is ambivalent. On the one hand, she dares to challenge the male-dominated society and supports women’s rights to receive education and freedom of love and marriage. On the other hand, she emphasizes that women should make self-sacrifice to help men achieve their goals.Based on The Mill on the Floss and studies of previous scholars, this thesis tries to analyze George Eliot’s ambivalent feminism. Thus it is beneficial for readers to observe and think about women’s future.  相似文献

Ibsen’s A Doll’s House is regarded as a kind of "canon". As the play shares an open ending, many critics seem to try to find a way out for Nora. Nora is supposed as the first woman to pronounce the "Women Declaration of Independence". She has become the most courageous women for fighting an equal place in family. However, this paper focuses mainly on the comparison between Nora and Kristine the relatively less popular character. Kristine plays a role of girlhood friend of Nora as well as the one who solves the debt problem and brings a new problem into Nora’s family. She serves a model for Nora. Ibsen writes Nora as she is, but it is Kristine who leads Nora onto the road of finding herself. Through the image of Kristine we can conclude that Nora might have all kinds road to tread before her but each one leads to a home-her true home.  相似文献

Alice Walker is one of the prominent American writers in American women’s literature and black literature in 1950s-1960s. Everyday Use is regarded as Alice Walker’s best-written short story. The prevailing opinion among the critics about this story is that Dee is the traitor of black American’s cultural heritage, and the mother and Maggie are the hope of true value of the African Americans’ tradition and heritage; however, after considering the historical and cultural background of the story, we may safely come to the conclusion that Dee actually took the first step toward the awakening of self-consciousness of the African Americans women.  相似文献

The purpose of this essay is to study whether the linguistic behaviour of adult women using hedging and tags as indicative of an intrinsically tentative gender identity or of the effects of male dominant position through analyzing daily conversations of the heterosexual couples. The small scale study employs the methodology, namely, recording spontaneous and natural spoken conversation from authentic interaction with the permission of the ten male-female couples.Digital record pen with an omnidirectional microphone are placed in the central living area of each couple’s home. Then discourse analysis provides data making it possible to support Fishman’s claim that women use tag questions and ’you know’ not because women are not being really sure of themselves,or are looking to the addressee for confirmation, but because men in a dominant position often refuse to take responsibility for the smooth conduct of interpersonal relations, women use tag questions and ’you know’ to elicit and maintain conversations.  相似文献

Kate Chopin, one of the most outstanding women writers in the late nineteenth century in America, focused on women’s social position, marriage and family, love and freedom to fight against patriarchalism. She wrote two novels and about a hundred short stories in the 1890s.And over a long period of time, critics have considered The Story of an Hour as a work of feminism which offers a strikingly feminist perspective on an American housewife of that time. This thesis analyzes the inner experience of the heroine within an hour and shows us that freedom is so essential to her while her marriage is a yoke to her.  相似文献

Within the framework of eco-feminist theory, this paper, taking Andrew Marvell’s "To His Coy Mistress" as a specific example,to explain how women and nature are marginalized and reduced to aphasia condition in literature. The paper presents a detailed analysis of the language of the poem, reveals men’s anthropocentric-andocentric attitudes toward nature and women and proposes the decentralization or the relation of "anotherness" as a possible way to reestablish a healthy culture(men)-nature(women) relationship.  相似文献

As we all know, William Faulkner shows really concern for the Southern people, especially the Southern women who suffer the most. In Faulkner’s works women characters play an important role, which is confirmed. After the theories of feminist literary come to understand Faulkner criticism, critics to Faulkner’s novels drafting an encouraging response detect the author himself either as a pro-feminist or a misogynist. On analyzing the woman characters through Addie and Lena Grove—the women images in As I Lay Dying and Light in August, we found out that Faulkner is neither simple a pro-feminist nor a misogynist in the patriarchal society.  相似文献

Throughout American literary history, women have experienced more transition in their roles,as a result of changing social norms, than any other class. At first, both society and the literary circles preached that women should be dependent on men and remain in the home,in order to guarantee stability in the community and the family. As time passed and attitudes changed, women were beginning to be depicted as characters that were eager to break away from convention. However, the subject role of women was never improved during the turbulent feminism movement.  相似文献
