The degree of affiliation which pupils develop towards their schools is an important factor in their engagement and success. It has also been a matter of concern at the time of transfer from primary to secondary school. This article describes the development of a brief method for identifying the degree of affiliation which pupils feel, and also identifying any points of concern. Data from 670 pupils in a London secondary school is reported. Concerns about pupils’ experience of transfer are often addressed through interventions which are teacher-centred. An account is given of a pupil-centred intervention to improve affiliation, and its apparent long-lasting effects. There also seems to be an improvement trend over years, reflecting the school’s paying attention to this theme.  相似文献

The clusters of disciplines originally developed by Biglan have been useful guides in classifying or categorizing academic departments. Questions remain, however, as to the validity of the Biglan clusters among a wide range of colleges and universities.This study provides evidence which supports the validity of the Biglan categories by showing how faculty salaries and instructional staffing patterns differ among departments along the dimensions described by Biglan.  相似文献

目前,中职学校专业教师数量不足和质量不高的问题同时存在,非对口专业教师任教现象比较普遍。师资问题已成为制约和影响中等职业教育质量提高和快速发展的瓶颈。河北师范大学职业技术学院是中职专业教师培养、培训的院校和全国重点建设的职教师资培训基地。“十五”以来,我们坚持“三性”(职业性、技术性、师范性)、“四双”(双师型素质、双技能训练、双证书制度、双基地建设)办学特色,通过全日制和函授专升本教学为中职学校培养了大批的、各类型的教学。我院主要通过以下举措加强中职师资的培养培训工作。  相似文献

The adoption of state accountability testing in the 1990s coincided with the movement of some school start dates from September into August. Using data from Wisconsin, this paper connects these phenomena, showing that some low-scoring districts advanced their school start dates to allow their students more time to prepare for exams. I use a 2001 Wisconsin state law that restricted districts to start dates after September 1st to identify the effects of this extra time on student achievement. Extra classroom days are associated with small increases in Math scores for 4th graders, but not average reading or language scores. Extra classroom time may also have increased third grade reading scores for students in the upper portion of the ability distribution.  相似文献

Measures of school performance based on pupil attainment are becoming more sophisticated, with DfES piloting ‘contextualized value‐added’ measures. However, most such measures are based on simple sums of residuals about ‘expected’ values, but it is clear from national data that distributions of performance are not symmetrical and of constant variance. A method is explored which takes account of the exact shape of the performance distribution to produce ‘standardized residuals’ which can be aggregated to the school level and give consistent measures on a fixed metric. This study investigated the effectiveness of a computer-based study guide using hypertext software to increase textbook comprehension among four learning disabled students enrolled in a remedial high school social studies class. The program provided four levels of instructional cues that matched students to their highest level of independent interaction with a textbook passage, based on item-to-item responses to computer-generated questions. Using alternative forms of a 45-item multiple-choice test, a pre-test/post-test design was arranged, with a retention test given after a 30-day period. Fifteen questions were designated as control items by placing them in the 45-item tests but not in the computer treatment. The computer program consisted of three separate lessons administered across consecutive class sessions, with each followed by a written 15-item multiple choice test containing 10 computer questions and 5 control items. Results indicated a significant gain for pupils on computer items from pre-test to post-test and from pre-test to retention test, while no significant change occurred on control items across measures. A single-case analysis revealed a consistent relationship between gain scores on computer items, reading time on computer, and the number of instructional cues required by students. Two types of non-linear pathways that teacher might consider when constructing study guides are discussed.  相似文献
