Collaborative Leadership at Ripon College

ABSTRACT

Lane Library's director left in 2002 during a time of financial uncertainty and administrative change at Ripon College. A temporary recommendation to utilize the talents of the remaining librarians to oversee the library until a new administration was in place was accepted by the librarians and the interim administration. After a great deal of research and discussion, the library implemented a permanent rotating chair model based on collaborative leadership to replace the position of Library Director.

“第十六届数字图书馆前沿问题高级研讨班”于2019年10月在成都召开,研讨班的主题是“数据科学、数据管理与数据应用”,来自国内外80余家高校和科研机构的260余名图书馆员、科研人员及师生等,围绕国内外数字图书馆在科学数据管理与服务领域研究与服务实践的最新进展和前沿动态等展开了深入交流和讨论,展示了数字图书馆在开放科学和科学大数据时代的新定位、新使命和新发展。文章从开放科学背景下科学大数据领域的发展态势、数字图书馆在科学大数据领域的定位与挑战、新技术对图书馆业务体系的深刻变革和影响等三个方面,讨论和分析了数字图书馆的发展现状以及未来的发展情景,特别是指出了未来图书馆(文献情报机构)将成为以数据知识生态系统的管理和服务为核心的“集成化跨界知识管理与服务咨询机构”的大方向。     

International Open Access Week at Small to Medium U.S. Academic Libraries: The First Five Years

This research seeks to expand the body of knowledge surrounding International Open Access Week (OA Week) practices among small to medium-sized U.S. institutions, examining the rationales guiding these, and creating a baseline activity inventory which may be elaborated upon as open access continues to evolve and as OA Week matures beyond its fifth (2013) anniversary. An electronic survey with closed- and open-ended questions was used to collect data, which were analyzed for recurring themes. Of respondents whose campuses did observe OA Week, the most reported reason for doing so was related to supporting the library's educational outreach program; fewer respondents cited the library's philosophical commitment to open access. Lack of time was the most frequently given reason for OA Week non-participation, however around one quarter of non-participating respondents reported that they were unaware of OA Week, and another quarter reported that it did not figure in their strategic plan. The conditions that were found to best support celebrating OA Week included a grasp of the principles guiding OA on the part of at least one librarian, reinforced by: the educational mission of the library; adequate personnel; and sufficient time for planning. This exploratory study yields points for library- and self-assessment.     

Understanding the Relationship Between the Librarian and the Academic

This article presents the findings of a small study that examined the relationship between academic librarians and their academic colleagues in a number of institutions in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. There is an abundance of literature outlining how librarians should collaborate with their academic colleagues but less emphasis on what librarians are doing in practice. This research explores the collaborative aspect of this relationship with a focus on information literacy training. Research findings look at factors which encourage and inhibit collaboration and challenges librarians face in achieving successful collaboration.     

Crossing Three Bridges: Linking Librarianship and Teaching Across the P-16 Educational Continuum

SUMMARY

Georgia State University Library's Education and Communication liaisons teamed up to teach a graduate course on the selection and use of reference resources for the College of Education's Library Media Technology Program. The collaboration between these two librarians can serve as a model for collaboration on three levels: collaboration between two librarians as co-teachers; collaboration between university librarians and academic department faculty; and, finally, “collaboration across work places” between academic librarians and school media specialists in P-12 settings. Unique challenges, benefits, and possibilities for this type of collaborative effort are examined.

The Varied Uses of Computer Automation in British Libraries

This paper describes automated systems and processes at various British libraries, including two public libraries, Oxfordshire County Central Library and Henley County Library; two academic libraries, Bristol University Library and the Bodleian Library, Oxford; a special library, the Rutherford Laboratory Library; a special library department of Oxford University, the Forestry Library; and Britain's National Library. The author observed automated processes and interviewed librarians and systems technicians at these libraries during the Oxford/Oklahoma Library Seminar, "Libraries and Librarianship in England," held in Oxford from May 23-June 11, 1982.     

Developing Leadership Skills for Reference Librarians: The Case for Planning a Local Conference

The planning, development, and organization of a one-day or multiple-day conference is time consuming, challenging, and requires a well-prepared framework. This article discusses the guidelines and strategies developed by the Southeast Florida Library Information Network Reference Committee for the organization of a successful local conference. These guidelines offer a model for any organization that is planning a conference and for incorporating future events into the planning process. They also serve as a collaborative model for what a regional network can achieve toward promoting and providing professional development and leadership opportunities for its libraries, librarians, and library staff.     

Innovation and Collaboration Brings Forth a New Approach to Bibliographic Instruction—Teach the Teachers

ABSTRACT

In 1994, the librarians at the University of Toledo's Carlson Library developed a bibliographic instruction program that is both efficient and successful. “Teach the Teachers” has been implemented in the English Department's Composition classes where it depends on the collaborative efforts between librarians and classroom instructors in assuring solid student library skills. The program philosophy shifts a librarian's teaching efforts from teaching the student to teaching the instructor. Librarians empower classroom instructors with the knowledge to teach basic information retrieval skills. This paper will discuss the development of the program, as well as the techniques used by both librarians and classroom instructors.     

Teaching Evidence-Based Practice in the Hospital and the Library: Two Different Groups,One Course

Key roles in teaching evidence-based practice (EBP) are of interest to many hospital and academic librarians. This article describes how three academic librarians, in collaboration with the academic medical center's EBP Nursing Council, developed a seminar consisting of three credit hours of instruction in the basics of evidence-based practice. The seminar consists of three core elements: basic principles of EBP and finding literature, clinical experience and integration of knowledge into the hospital setting, and patient education and participation. Emphasis is placed upon analysis of the literature, institutional models of practice change, and the importance of patient roles in guideline development.     

On Open Access Evangelism

As librarians take on the responsibility for promoting Open Access (OA) publishing at their institutions, they face many doubts and misconceptions about OA. This article reviews common misunderstandings about OA and reflects on different methods academic librarians can use to address researcher doubts and convince faculty to commit themselves to publishing their works in OA venues.     

Reading in the digital age: A case study in faculty and librarian collaboration

ABSTRACT

This article describes a collaborative partnership of two librarians and an English professor who created a unit for a senior capstone seminar on “The Digital Turn in English Studies.” After reading Charlotte Perkins Gilman's “The Yellow Wallpaper” in both print and digitized versions, students completed a survey on reading preferences and provided feedback on an experimental eTextReader allowing for annotation. Students also did blog postings providing a fuller picture of attitudes toward digital texts. We situate quantitative and qualitative findings in three contexts: the field of digital humanities, reading in the digital age, and tool development.     

Engaging in research: challenges and opportunities for health library and information professionals

This year's virtual issue (the 6th in the series) has been published to coincide with the European Association for Health Information and Libraries’ (EAHIL) 2015 workshop (10–12 June, Edinburgh): Research‐Minded: Understanding, Supporting, Conducting Research. This event is being run in collaboration with the International Conference of Animal Health Information Specialists and the International Clinical Librarian Conference. Although research has always been a central part of any librarian's role, until recently health librarians and library users and funding bodies assumed that librarians were ‘midwives’ – there to assist students, clinicians, academics and managers set up and carry out their research. The notion of the librarian as a professional with a research agenda, who understands research methods, submits research grants, and publishes, is a relatively new perspective. If librarians are to take an evidence‐based approach to their profession they need to acquire research skills. This is the rationale for the 2015 EAHIL workshop. To support the workshop, this virtual issue contains six original articles published in Health Information and Libraries Journal over the last 2 years that demonstrate the range of research activities carried out by health librarians, as well as a review article and articles from each of the three feature columns. All articles included in this virtual issue are available free online.     

高校图书馆利用OA期刊开展信息服务的实践探讨——以桂林医学院图书馆为例

开放存取(OA)资源对提高图书馆信息资源保障能力和用户服务水平均具有重要意义。桂林医学院图书馆对OA期刊进行搜集、整合,通过建设OA期刊检索平台为用户提供参考咨询服务。高校图书馆在利用OA期刊开展信息服务时应有针对性地进行资源配置,有选择地配备人员,保持数据库建设的持续性,保证OA网站资源的稳定性,重视OA期刊的宣传推荐工作,做好数据的维护更新工作。     

An exploratory study of the collaborative relationship between teachers and librarians in Singapore primary and secondary schools

Research on the collaborative relationship between teachers and school librarians in the developed nations of the Western world, particularly in the United States, has shown that overall student achievement and performance improves significantly with increased collaboration. In Singapore, very little research has been conducted on the collaborative relationship between teachers and school librarians. It was thus timely and necessary to examine the situation in Singapore schools, especially when established findings have favorably promoted this collaboration. This exploratory study investigated the level of collaboration between teachers and librarians in Singapore primary and secondary schools. A total of 76 teachers from seven schools participated in the study. The level of collaboration was very low and teachers had yet to regard the school librarian as an educational partner who could add value to the school curriculum. This article presents recommendations for promoting a more dynamic and effective collaborative relationship between teachers and school librarians in Singapore.     

Beyond the Library's Walls: Using Library 2.0 Tools to Reach Out to All Users

ABSTRACT

The Library 2.0 movement emerged as a response to the technologies and concepts in the Web 2.0 movement and has been taking the library world by storm. Web 2.0 takes the stagnant Web 1.0 and makes it more user-driven, collaborative, participatory, and personalized. Library 2.0 takes the tools of Web 2.0 and moves them into a library setting with libraries that are user-centered, networking faculty, students, and librarians to create a vital and evolving organization designed to meet the needs of the current information culture. Library 2.0 is especially relevant to institutions providing services to off-campus students. Many students taking courses remotely have full-time jobs and busy lives beyond their coursework. Providing those students with a customizable, personalized, and collaborative library assists in their success as a student. Using Web 2.0 technologies and other social networking tools in the library setting brings the library to our users, making them more relevant in today's information society.     

Graduate Business Students and Business Information Literacy: A Novel Approach

Currently the literature examining formal business information literacy (BIL) instruction and graduate business students focuses on the collaborative efforts between individual librarians and business school faculty members to bring information literacy into the classroom. This article argues that all graduate business students need formal BIL instruction to succeed in their studies and as business leaders. The unique decade-long collaboration between Hofstra University's Axinn Library and Frank G. Zarb School of Business is examined.
