My mother passed on. The dreadful call came at 1:30 am on the morning of November 5, and by 8 o'clock that morning I was on the first flight available out of New York to Beijing. One only loses his or her mother once. Nobody knows what the feeling is until the moment comes. The first few hours in the flight, I felt numb; I didn't know how I should feel, and I was trying to figure out why I was on a flight to Beijing. As the flight was approaching Beijing, I started to realize that Mother was gone, and I was coming home for her funeral. Images of Mother, so remote yet so clear, flashed through my mind.

Unlike most of the other nonfoolish holidays, the history of April Fool's Day, sometimes called All Fool's Day, is not totally clear. There really wasn't a " first April Fool's -Day" that can be pinpointed on the calendar. Some believe it evolved simultaneously in several cultures at the same time, from celebrations involving the first day of spring. The closest point in time that can be identified as the beginning of this tradition was in 1564, in France. Prior to that year, the new year was celebrated for eight days, beginning just after the first day of spring. The celebration typically ended on April 1 . With the refonn of the calendar under Charles IX, the Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year's Day was moved to January 1 .

Motorbike and I
My friends and I always find an excuse to ride a motorbike. I personally think it is one of the funniest things to do in Guilin. The first time I did it I had to admit I was a little bit nervous. I had never been on a motorbike before and I always thought there was a big possibility of failing off the bike, for the road was too bumpy.

The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year. -- Mark Twain
The history of April Fool's Day or All Fool's Day is uncertain (不确定的), but the current (当前的) thinking is that it began around 1582 in France with the reform of the calendar under Charles IX. The Gregorian Calendar (阳历 ) was introduced, and New Year's Day was moved from March 25 - April 1 (New Year's week) to Januarv 1.

(新课标I卷B篇)Since the first Earth Day in 1970, Americans have gotten a lot "greener" toward the environment. "We didn't know at that time that there even was an environment, let alone that there was a problem with it," says Bruce Anderson, president of Earth Day USA.

When I first went to China to teach English I was at a rural school in the south. The closest city was Conghua, with about eighty-five thousand people. I liked to go there on my one day off each week to buy fruit and other things to have in my dorm at the school. Sometimes, I would go with one of the other foreign teachers but many times I would go alone and I would be the only westerner in the city, a minority of one.

Once,a friend from China came to visit me around the selection time. So,on the Election Day I took him to the polling place to see democracy in action. The Unexciting Election Process The polling place was located in a church. There were a few desks with volunteer workers sitting behind them, all smiles. No one checked my ID.I just went up to the volunteer workers and told them who I was,and one of them found my name from a voters' list. The only thing I needed to do was to sign next to my name to validate the information.

<正>I guess you could say my life began pretty normally. I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 24th, 1982. No big thing at all except for the fact that I was the first son of Terry and Kim Edwards and the first grandson for both sets of grandparents. My life was about to get interesting, and for the next few years it wouldn’t stop spinning.
