Usage of electronic journals and their effect on interlibrary loan: A case study at the University of Nevada, Reno

As libraries increase their electronic journal collections, would dependence on interlibrary loan decrease? This paper reports a case study at the University of Nevada, Reno, University Libraries (UNR) focusing on the usage of the Elsevier online journal package and interlibrary loan (ILL) borrowing activities. It analyzes four-years' worth of UNR usage and ILL statistics, gathered between July 1999 and June 2003. It also provides observations and explanations from a perspective beyond statistics, at the level of library services and the campus demographic and research environments.     

The Illinois Interlibrary Loan Assessment Project II: revisiting statewide article sharing and assessing the impact of electronic full-text journals

This paper presents data from two statewide ILL studies conducted in Illinois in 1995/96 and 1999/00. The results from the two studies provide a longitudinal look at borrowing and lending in Illinois and with the second study confirm a journal resource-sharing model for the state. Further analysis of high-use titles was conducted to determine any impact the present availability of full-text electronic journals is having on ILL, and the potential impact full-text access to highly-requested titles could have on resource sharing in Illinois.

The Decline of the Number of Interlibrary Loans by Medical Students in a Small Academic Medical Library: A Study of 18 Years of Data

The objective of this study is to provide data on one aca-demic medical library's experience with first and second year medical students’ use of interlibrary loan at the Indiana University School of Medicine–Northwest, Steven C. Beering Medical Library. The results of a study of 18 years of data show a substantial decline of interlibrary loans by medical students. Several factors, including the unique problem-based learning curriculum and the availability of online journals, which has expanded a small medical library's collection, may be responsible for the reduction of interlibrary loan. This study suggests the need for collection development librarians to understand their medical school curriculum and to invest in the most useful electronic journals for their medical students’ education needs.     

Use of electronic journals in astronomy and astrophysics libraries and information centres in India: A users' perspective

The purpose of this study was to create a substantial body of knowledge about the factors that influence the success of electronic journals, and to share this knowledge with that in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics in order to help facilitate change.

Structured questionnaires for users (Academic Members, Post-Doctoral Fellows and Research Scholars) containing 40 different questions, many of which were further subdivided and framed in order to get information on various aspects of the usage of electronic journals. The purpose was to identify the basic minimum infrastructure necessary to provide users access to electronic journals and to facilitate easy response in all major A&A organizations in India.

The increasing use of the electronic information-seeking environment has produced changes in the practice of science. Significant research has been conducted already on the impact of new information and communication technologies on scholarly work.

This study was limited to astronomy and astrophysics libraries and information centres in India.

This paper identifies the information needs of the users. Each community and discipline has its own specific legacy of journal structure, reading, publishing, and researching practices, and it will take trial and error to establish which kinds of e-journals are the most effective and useful.

An investigation into the move towards electronic journals: a case study of NHS libraries in Kent,Surrey and Sussex

Electronic journals are so embedded into practice in academic libraries that it is easy to forget that this is not the case everywhere. In NHS libraries, for example, the staff face a particular set of issues. This article is based on Rebecca England's dissertation on this topic, completed as part of the MSc Econ course in Information and Library studies at Aberystwyth University. Rebecca is E‐resources Librarian at the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. She investigated the momentum towards electronic journals in NHS libraries in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex region and the potential for a regional purchasing consortium. AM     

Participate in Professional Activities by Serving on a Conference Planning Committee: Strategies for Beginning Interlibrary Loan Professionals

The author provides guidance, based on her personal experience, to interlibrary loan staff at all levels to contribute to professional organizations outside of their own library. She encourages interlibrary loan professionals to volunteer for the planning committee of interlibrary loan specific conferences or events as one way to serve the profession on a wider scale. Furthermore, the author outlines numerous benefits and lists selected events that may accept volunteers.

科技期刊编辑是科技期刊界的重要人力资源,其职业素质对行业的高质量发展具有关键作用。本研究以微信公众号“品味纯美人生”发布的315篇(截至2021-12-31)编辑出版类论文的审稿意见为基础数据,利用Python和Excel软件进行初步分析,再在详细研读文本资料基础上,从政治素质、业务素质和科研作风3个维度,对这些论文中的典型或普遍问题进行归类,由这些问题推及其可能反映出的编辑职业素质情况,如导向性问题、参考文献和语言文字不规范及研究过程不严谨、科研态度不认真等。最后提出相应的职业素质提升建议,如加强政治理论内容多渠道灌输、重视相关标准规范自主学习和注重论文写作中的多视角审核等。

The life cycle of altmetric impact: A longitudinal study of six metrics from PlumX

The main objective of this study is to describe the life cycle of altmetric and bibliometric indicators in a sample of publications. Altmetrics (Downloads, Views, Readers, Tweets, and Blog mentions) and bibliometric counts (Citations) (in this study, the indicators will be capitalized to differentiate them from the general language) of 5185 publications (19,186 observations) were extracted from PlumX to observe their distribution according to the publication age. Correlations between these metrics were calculated from month to month to observe the evolution of these relationships. The results showed that mention metrics (Tweets and Blog mentions) are the earliest metrics that become available most quickly and have the shortest life cycle. Next, Readers are the metrics with the highest prevalence and with the second fastest growth. Views and Downloads show a continuous growth, being the indicators with the longest life cycles. Finally, Citations are the slowest indicators and have a low prevalence. Correlations show a strong relationship between mention metrics and Readers and Downloads, and between Readers and Citations. These results enable us to create a schematic diagram of the relationships between these metrics from a longitudinal view.

Surveying scholars’ perceptions of electronic environments: A case study of university libraries in Kerala (India)

This study was conducted to investigate research scholars’ perceptions of the information sources, services and infrastructures in university libraries in Kerala. A survey questionnaire was sent to research scholars working in four universities. The study revealed that the organization of resources and services in university libraries is not fully oriented towards supporting the process of research, and scholars were not satisfied with existing primary resources and personalized services. The study provides recommendations to enhance research-oriented library resources and services.

Marketing methods for electronic resources in medical libraries: a study on the application of the analytical hierarchy process

Objective:Paired with the high cost of providing access to electronic resources in medical libraries, the inefficient use of these resources highlights the need for more efforts to promote these resources than ever before. In this study, electronic resource marketing methods were prioritized and the best strategies were determined using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP).Methods:Using an analytical survey of officials of medical libraries, the most common methods for marketing electronic resources in libraries were determined and divided into categories of strategies. Five important criteria for marketing strategies were also selected. Using the analytical hierarchy process, pairwise comparisons were performed between the alternatives (i.e., strategies), which were evaluated against the selected criteria. Data analysis was performed using Expert Choice 11 software.Results:A total of 44 electronic resource marketing methods were identified and categorized into 4 strategies. On average, 43.9% of these methods were used by the surveyed libraries. The analytical hierarchy process showed that simplicity was the most important criterion and that communication networks were the best electronic resource marketing strategy. Home/off-campus access, group training, library search stations, and marketing by individual librarians were the most preferred methods of marketing electronic resources.Conclusion:With the availability of a variety of different methods for marketing electronic resources, medical libraries must select strategies based on important criteria depending on the characteristics of the library, librarians, and users. Thus, the analytical hierarchy process can be an effective and practical solution to decision-making by mathematically prioritizing the selection of the best strategies from a set of alternatives based on differentially weighted criteria.     

The future of electronic reserves and the presence of librarians in content management systems: A case study at Manhattan College

This article addresses the development of electronic reserves within academic libraries. Libraries have been offering electronic reserve services on separate platforms since the 1990s (Austin, 2013). However, since the integration of campus-wide content management systems (CMSs), the need for a library reserves platform that is independent from an institution's CMS has decreased, and independent e-reserves systems have potentially become obsolete (Maddison & Kumaran, 2017). This article presents the steps taken between 2015 and 2017 by the O'Malley Library to streamline the electronic reserves services so that they are accessible through the college's CMS, Moodle. Through careful study, the library decided to eliminate electronic reserves services in the future. This will be replaced with encouraging faculty to add the course content traditionally placed on electronic reserves in Moodle while librarians provide guidance in avenues such as copyright and Fair Use.     

The impact of the national performance review and other forces on the rights of an informed citizenry: A case study in reinvention—reforming government publishing

Title 44 of the United States Code, containing the law governing the printing, publication, dissemination, and access to government publications, was written over 100 years ago. In the past decade, this law has come under attack, undermining the ability of the American citizenry to be fully informed about the activities of the federal government. This article examines the needed reforms to Title 44 and other legislative initiatives required to ensure the right of the citizenry to be informed.     

The impact of leadership and stakeholders on the success/failure of e-government service: Using the case study of e-stamping service in Hong Kong

Using e-stamping service in Hong Kong as a case study, this paper examines the impact of leadership and stakeholders on the success or failure of e-government service in Hong Kong. Multiple methods are used for data collection: documents and archival record research, direct observation, and interviews. Results show that both leadership and stakeholders have an impact on the success of e-stamping service.
