Engineering Education in Canada and the Cooperative Electrical Engineering Program at the University of Waterloo

Although cooperative engineering is practiced at several universities in the United States, that at the University of Waterloo is unique in Canada. The baccalaureate program requires five years of continual attendance, during which the student spends alternate three-month periods in school and in industry. A distinctive feature of the plan is the maintenance of a Coordination Department within the University organization. Staffed by senior professional engineers, this department acts as liaison between industry and the students. Two programs of study are offered in the undergraduate electrical engineering curriculum. One of these is designed for the heavy electromechanical and power systems engineer. The other embraces electronics, communication and computery disciplines, with a greater concentration of theoretical studies. Although the University is still in its infancy, both industrial and student acceptance of the cooperative plan has exceeded initial expectations. There is every indication that co-operative engineering education will rapidly assume a dominant role in the Canadian academic scene.     

The Role of an AC Network Calculator in the Electrical Engineering Curriculum at the Pennsylvania State University

Changes are being made in the content of presentday electrical engineering curriculums which require a fresh, modern outlook with regard to techniques pertaining to problem assignments and laboratory projects. Course content is being upgraded and broadened in the direction of a fundamental analytical approach. The recent revision of the electrical engineering curriculum at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, includes liberal use of an ac network calculator in all electrical engineering options, which are outlined in this paper. The uniqueness of the ac network calculator at the University is that it is used exclusively for educational purposes, especially in the Department of Electrical Engineering. This paper discusses the "when, where, and how" of the utilization of this facility in the electrical engineering curriculum.

They emphasise, however, that appraisal schemes to be introduced in Salford will in no way be bound by the views expressed here.

The Bologna Declaration inspired changes in university education in the Czech Republic. In this paper we discuss the impact of these changes on the education of engineers at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University, Prague.     

Engineering ethics at the Catholic University of Lille (France): Research and teaching in a European context

This paper relates to the development of non-technical education (and to ethics) in engineering curricula in Europe and particularly in France. Two projects being followed at the Centre de recherche en éthique de l'ingénieur (CREI) at the Catholic University of Lille (France) are discussed: the first is an engineering ethics course which has been running for 6 years in a state engineering school, where there is a strong emphasis on analysing the ethical issues of the students' first work experience. The second has to do with the writing of a European handbook on engineering ethics which gives us good insight into how engineering ethics as a discipline is shaped by the cultural background of those who develop it (dominant philosophical tradition, religious background, the way the engineering profession is organized and education). Two main approaches seem to be prevalent in Europe today: the first relates to professional ethics as discussed in the USA since the 1950s, the second relates to a new discipline that is developing in Europe, that of the ethics of technology.

Engineering Studies at the Open University

Over the first 25 years of its existence, the Open University has developed a range of high‐quality courses in engineering subjects. Printed texts are complemented by radio and television broadcasts, audio‐ and video‐cassettes, home experiment equipment, computing packages and laboratory‐based summer schools. Recent developments using new technologies are outlined.     

Non-Technical Education in the Electrical Engineering Department of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology

The Electrical Engineering Department of the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) has included a non-technical education program in its curriculum for more than 10 years. General ideas supporting this program as well as a brief summary of the content are given in the paper.     

儿童文学本科专业建设的实践与思考

2003年以来,浙江师范大学人文学院儿童文学系在本科专业建设方面,做出了切实的实践与探索.在专业教学体系的探索与新教材的推出、师资队伍建设与专业人才培养、教学设施的完善与教学资源的充实、专业特色的拓展与第二课堂的开辟等方面取得了重要的进展.从近五年的建设过程来看,还需要从专业课程开拓、内部管理机制、学术资源利用、学生个体关怀等方面进一步加强相关的建设工作.     

举行院系级教学基本功比赛 着力提高教学水平

组织教学比赛是帮助青年教师提高教学水平的有效手段之一。北京高校青年教师教学基本功比赛目前已经举办了六届,清华大学青年教师教学基本功比赛已举办三届,通过比赛提高了青年教师的整体教学水平。2009年,清华大学电机系通过探索,组织了系级青年教师教学比赛。将教学比赛引入课堂,以比赛促进青年教师教学能力提高,取得了良好的效果。文章对系级教学基本功比赛的组织模式进行了探讨。     

A Look at the New Electrical Engineering Laboratory Program at the Hopkins

The undergraduate electrical engineering program at The Johns Hopkins University has undergone extensive revision. The most striking revision has been in the laboratory program. Laboratory courses which are distinct from the lecture courses have been developed. These laboratory courses embrace the fields of basic and advanced electrical measurements, transducers, passive circuits, active networks, communications, microwaves, materials, computers, servomechanisms, and energy conversion. The experiments in each one of these fields are designed to give the student insight into both the basic and advanced concepts involved. The sequence of presentation of the experiments is chosen to allow the most complete coverage of a subject as possible, based on the order in which the electrical engineering lecture courses are taken. The use of laboratory manuals, notebooks, reports, and examinations has been given careful thought and some significant ideas have been evolved with regard to their use in establishing a successful laboratory course.     

The Role of the University Head of Department

Abstract

The head of department occupies a key institutional position yet the role is a complex and demanding one which is subject to pressures, conflicts and uncertainties. This paper examines aspects of the role of the head of department through the proceedings of a day conference for heads of department at one university. It highlights issues and concerns, and analyses them in terms of the cultural and organisational characteristics of universities as institutions. Among the key issues identified are: the nature of institutional management structures; relationships with the administrative centre; and the nature and definition of the head of department's role.     

高校工科类院系人才引进刍议

以黎明职业大学机电工程与自动化学院为例,通过发放问卷和召开学生座谈会两种形式,发现《电工技术》实验教学存在的问题,提出改善电工实验教学的三大措施,重点提出项目导向模式下"工学结合"的教学改革模式,紧扣"实用"、"实训"两个环节,把岗位技能培养融入到课程体系,使课程教学与技能培养充分"对接",从而培养出更高层次应用型人才。
