A SIGNAL DETECTION APPROACH TO THE STUDY OF TELEVISION PRODUCTION EFFECTS

An experiment was devised to investigate the effects that a variable camera‐angle may have upon the audience ‘rating’ of a television performer. An attempt was then made to quantify these effects in terms of probability of occurrence using Signal Detection Theory. Although the results were not conclusive, the application of this statistical theory in such circumstances seems both successful and useful, and suggests new possibilities for research in this field.

MEASURING INSTRUCTIONAL VALIDITY: A REPORT OF AN INSTRUCTIONAL VALIDITY STUDY FOR THE ALABAMA HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION EXAMINATION

Prior to the initial administration of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam, this study was conducted to determine to what extent competencies to be measured by the exam were being taught in the public schools of Alabama.
Teachers of grades 7, 8, 9, and 10 were asked to report the proportion of students in their classes who had received instruction on each competency. The survey identifies a number of competencies that were not being extensively taught and provides insight as to possible reasons certain competencies are not uniformly taught.     

DETERMINING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE IDEAL PROFESSOR: AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH

In a recently conducted study it was found that an effective college teacher could be characterized chiefly in terms of "research,""teaching," and "service to the university." The present experiment corroborated these findings using a relatively unknown approach to data collection, analysis, and interpretation. A free-response method of data collection, in conjunction with nonmetric multidimensional scaling, produced results highly similar to those of the previous study. In addition, the solution permitted a straight-forward means of assessing the performance of individual faculty members.
