How many Chinese journals are included in the newly indexed 700 regional journals on Web of Science？

Based on the current news via Thomson Reuters ＂700 new regional journals in the world have been added to Web of Science since 2007＂, we conducted an investigation to find out that 43 （6.1%） Chinese journals （including 6 journals from Hong Kong region） are included. The results also show that up to now a total of about 153 Chinese journals （114 from China Mainland, 11 from Hong Kong and 28 from Taiwan） have been included by SCI and SSCI ＆ AHCI.

Communicative Competence & Communicative Language Teaching

Traditionally, English teaching in China is dominated by a teacher-centered, book-centered, grammar-translation method, audio-lingual method and an emphasis on rote learning, resulting in limited vocabulary and poor communicative competence. However, the communicative approach has provided the expected results since it was introduced into China in the 1990s, improving their linguistic competence as well as their communicative competence.     

Hong Kong students＇ approaches to learning： Cross-cultural comparisons

Anecdotal evidence abounds in Hong Kong to the effect that students entering tertiary education are predisposed to a ＂rote＂ learning approach. With the internalisation of higher education in many countries, there is still insufficient understanding of how Chinese students approach their learning. Except few studies were conducted locally, there have been no systematic studies undertaken and there is a tendency to rely on anecdotal statements about Hong Kong students＇ approaches to learning. This study was designed to see if Hong Kong Chinese students who enrolled into a 3-year undergraduate programme in occupational therapy predisposed to a surface or deep approach to learning react differently when moving progressively from one stage to the next stage in their curriculum. The study adopted a longitudinal design method and measured students＇ changes in their approaches to learning using the Biggs＇ Study Process Questionnaire （SPQ）. The internal consistency reliability estimates for SPQ scales for samples of Hong Kong, Australia and UK were compared. The results of this study indicated that Hong Kong Chinese students demonstrated a higher mean for the deep approach learning and a lower mean for the surface approach, similar to other Hong Kong studies conducted in other tertiary institutions in Hong Kong and Australia.     

Difference of Translation Subjectivity fro Two English Translation Version of Hong Lou Meng

Hong Lou Meng is one of the four greatest classical novels of China. Since the appearance of the book, more and more people have been interested in it and have begun to study the book from different point of views. Then a new subject-redology, namely the study of the book- comes out. Hong Lou Meng, as representing the peak of the development in the tranditional chinese realistic novels, has been translated into many languages. Nowdays, there are only two versions of the translation that consists of the whole 120 chapters of the book: one is entitled A Dream of Red Mansions translated by Yang Hsien-yi and his wife Gladys Yang; the one with the title The Story of the Stone is translated by David Hawkes and John Minford.From the view of culture, the book Hong Lou Meng is a great collection of chinese traditional culture, and it reflects the tradition, the religion, the festivals, the tea culture, and the medicine culture and as well as the opera and poem s of chines people. But viewing the translation versions, different people have different translations to the same culture elements. This paper, beginning from this point, makes a first study about the translatiuon subjectivity sense, that leads to this translation differences.     

The Significance of Western Marxist Critique of Political Economics

China has entered the era of surplus economy when it is possible for Chinese people to satisfy their material needs. However, since the supply of cultural product is far below the level of its de mand, the people are still in a deficit state in spiritual life. The deficiency in spiritual life is quite dif ferent from that in material life, in the sense that it cannot be overcome by the development of culture industry. The way of satisfying a cultural need is wholly different from that of a material need, thus the substitute of the former with the latter necessarily leads to the alienation of needs. Only when we substitute “preference economics” with “necessary economics” is it possible for us to see the potential ity of transformation from the “bourgeois society” to the “human society”, revealed by Marxian cri tique of political economics, and to set the base for the theoretical innovation of the transformation era. Western Marxist Critique of Political Economics has provided us with a rewarding reference.
