Direct mail, once the engine behind such successful bookselling businesses as Book-of-the-Month Club, Reader’s Digest Condensed Books and Time Life Books, was a major channel for marketing books as recently as 20 years ago. A victim of the growth of large bookstore chains and later of the Internet, direct response bookselling is no longer is regarded as viable. But many of the skill sets developed by direct marketers decades ago are highly relevant for modern book marketing—especially when one considers that the Internet itself is the best direct-marketing channel ever invented. And as eBooks continue to change the structure of publishing, publishers will find themselves under increasing pressure to embrace direct-marketing methodologies and connect directly with their readers, rather than reaching them through book retailers and other intermediaries as they have traditionally done.  相似文献

Abstract

The WLN Conspectus determines a library's acquisition commitment (growth rate) by considering what percentage of book publishing output it acquired. In 2000, the Bowker Annual changed its source of book publishing from the American Book Publishing Record to Books in Printwith an attendant increase in recorded output. That increase has serious implications for libraries using the WLN formula to determine collecting levels. The recent Art assessment at Jacksonville State University demonstrates how Bowker's change in book title output affects the library's acquisition commitment level, and what adjustments the library made to maintain consistency and continuity.  相似文献

The Colophon, published from 1925 through 1935 for an audience of book collectors and connoisseurs, illuminates the debate over the basis of a book's value: genuine quality or artificial scarcity. It also illustrates the distinction between genuine news about the book industry and “publicity hypnosis”—today’s “hype.” The magazine’s authors, designers, typographers, printers, and illustrators were among the finest of their day. Claire Badaracco is an assistant professor at Marquette University, and is currently writing a series of articles about Anglo-American book publishing, journalism, and publicity trades between 1920 and 1940 with the support of The British Academy, the National Endowment, and the Bibliographical Society of America. Her work has been published inAmerican Literary Realism, Journalism Quarterly, Essays in Business and Economic History, and other journals. ABSTRACT

The Russian Book Chamber (RBC, Rossiiskaia knizhnaia palata) is Russia's national bibliographic center. In addition to compiling the many series of the national bibliography, it also publishes two scholarly journals and prepares periodic reports about book publishing and distribution in Russia as a whole and in her separate regions. The RBC has been undergoing many changes, including modernizing its telecommunication infrastructure, updating its capability to provide information in electronic format, setting standards, working with other agencies to prevent piracy, redistributing responsibilities between itself and the regional book chambers, creating bibliographical formats compatible with those of other countries, etc.  相似文献

The American Antiquarian Society, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, is sponsoring a multivolume collaborative effort, A History of the Book in America, to be published by Cambridge University Press. This article describes the project’s organization, editorial leadership, and procedures. It discusses the historical issues the series will engage and the themes and problems that have emerged. The project hopes to serve a diverse audience, including both scholars and practitioners of publishing. John B. Hench has been on the staff of the American Antiquarian Society since 1973 and presently serves as director of research and publication. The Book Culture Club at Hong Kong Baptist University goes beyond the traditional book talk format. Its vision is to nurture a culture that values reading, writing, and publishing books through a synergistic approach among the library, authors, potential authors, and publishers. Since its inauguration in early 2009, the club has offered eighteen programs and has attracted more than 1,200 attendees by March 2013. In this article, the author will describe how the Book Culture Club was formed, present a series of activities conducted, describe how events are prepared and implemented, discuss successful outcomes and offer reflections thereon, and demonstrate how good outreach initiatives for connecting many various parties can produce a long-lasting impact in an academic setting.  相似文献

学术出版活动是促进科学知识传播、共享科研成果及推动科学研究的主要形式,而发表科技论文是学术出版活动的主要内容。近年来,随着科学技术的发展,全球学术出版活动蓬勃发展,与学术出版活动密切相关的第三方服务也逐渐兴起。学术出版第三方服务为科研人员开展科学研究提供了便利,被国内外学术界广泛接受,但由于其服务范围模糊、界限不分明,往往存在个别学术不端现象。本文基于最新发布的《学术出版第三方服务的边界蓝皮书(2020)》,阐述了其中规定的正当服务及不正当服务,并从管理部门、第三方服务机构、期刊编辑部及科研人员角度提出了学术不端行为防范对策。学术出版活动各个环节要积极参与治理学术不端问题,推动科研诚信及创新性国家建设。  相似文献

Children’s literature is essentially different from textbooks used in classrooms. It was primarily developed in India after the establishment of Children’s Book Trust and National Book Trust in 1957. A truly multilingual phenomenon, Amar Chitra Katha was developed by India Book House and has sold over 80 million copies in some 30 years. The Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan programme started by the Government of India, has done exceptionally well in developing and encouraging the development of children’s literature in regional languages. English being the language of communication is understood in all parts of the country so more books have been published in this language. Reading habits of children have been developed through reading campaigns by Non Government Organisations (NGOs), Children Literary Festivals, Book Fairs, School Book Fairs and Book Clubs. International and Indian Characters have also increased the publishing of children’s books and reading habits of children.  相似文献

A hunger for books, an unsettled distribution system, availability of publishing personnel, and low costs have created a good environment for entering the marketplace. But it is not a chance for quick profits. Leonard Shatzkin has been involved in the production and manufacture of books since 1945. Publishers of books for the library and scholarly markets use prepublication reviews to reduce the risk of publishing a book that does not meet scholarly standards or is not economically justifiable. Book purchasers use postpublication reviews to reduce the risk of spending their budgets unwisely. Despite problems associated with both sorts of review, they are integral to the processes of scholarly communication and academic career advancement.
