Maxine Kingston is one of the greatest Chinese American writers since 1970 s, whose works are well popular in literary market and academic circle. Published in 1980, China Men, has won many prizes for Maxine Kingston, including the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and also been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. This book is a"narrative genealogy"(Lee, 2003) of Chinese immigrants in the United Stated, depicting their real living experience from the Opium War to the end of Vietnam War. With the representation of the Oriental’s life to incarnate their pursuit of American Dream, China Men is closely connected with Orientalism put forward by Edward Said. In Pangs of Love by David Wong Louie, the identity of Chinese immigrants in America is as fluid and unstable as the perfume Musk 838. The Chinese-born mom harbors deep love for China. Though living in America for forty years, she is still persisting in the Chinese tradition while her American-born sons, on the contrary, are trying to integrate into American life, seemingly ignoring the Chinese origin. By looking at the ideological difference under the Chinese and American historical context, this paper aims to reveal that translating the past, old, what’s Chinese into something meaningful to the present, the new and the reality makes it possible that the first-generation integrates into American culture and the second-generation understands Chinese tradition. It illuminates the ways for possible transformation and demonstrates the possibility to establish a Chinese-American identity to transcend the pangs for embracing each other.  相似文献

This paper studies the similarities and differences between the goals of bilingual education in China and the United States. China and the U. S. have similar purposes in providing bilingual education to language minorities at the elementary-secondary school level. The Americans use bilingual education as a remedy, but most Chinese treat it as a tool for tangible interests. American colleges and universities provide monolingual instruction only, but their Chinese counterparts are promoting bilingual instruction today. Many have considered American bilingual education a failure. The validity of China's collegiate bilingual instruction is under debating. More research work must be done before we learn how bilingual education may be efficiently and effectively provided to different groups with various educational needs.  相似文献
