Based largely on McCracken's ‘cultural meaning transfer’ model (1989), which stresses the cultural meanings of celebrity endorsers, this study explores the characteristics that differentiate celebrity-endorser strategies in South Korean newspaper ads from those in US newspaper ads. With Hofstede's cultural typology—uncertainty avoidance and power distance—as a theoretical framework, this study finds that ads in South Korea with a high uncertainty avoidance and a high power distance culture present a higher proportion of celebrity endorsers than those in the US with a low uncertainty avoidance and a low power distance culture. However, US ads have a greater proportion of product-related celebrity endorsers in both high- and low-involvement product ads. The study also provides detailed information on foreign celebrity endorsers presented in international product ads.  相似文献

This study applies Hall's (1977) culture‐context theory and Hofstede's (1991) individualistic/collectivistic aspects of cultural differences to understand how content and appeals of political advertising in Taiwan and the US differ. The aspects examined included the presence of direct and indirect attacks, the presentation of issues, types of settings, and the use of metaphors, symbols, and songs. Analyses showed that most of the findings were consistent with cultural expectations.  相似文献

To combat the constant supply of negative news, some online news outlets focus solely on “good” news. But what is the value of “good” news? A content analysis was conducted to determine which traditional news values (timeliness, conflict, impact, etc.) appear in stories on Web sites dedicated to positive news. The researcher compared “good” news sites to the New York Times. Results indicated that the majority of “good” news stories were entertaining and emotional, whereas the majority of New York Times stories involved authority figures and conflict. Good news stories were less committed to journalism’s core functions, such as holding power accountable and providing the public with information necessary for creating an informed electorate.  相似文献

摒弃为图书馆学研究对象寻找\"本质\"并致力于证成它们的研究思路,解构某些预设的\"给定\"在图书馆学研究中的先在性地位。图书馆学价值目标应该从一元走向多元,不仅要追求文献信息的传递效益,还应当承担更为广泛的社会道义。在图书馆学的研究内容上,必须突破图书馆自身小文本的局限,引入和图书馆有关的更为多样化的社会因子,从而多维度地选择、评价和权衡图书馆行为。颠覆图书馆学研究方法中对广泛的一致性话语的追求,运用多元并存的思维方式寻求对图书馆学现象的创造性解释。  相似文献

This essay demonstrates the ways in which some lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ) rights and immigrant rights organizations enact a form of cultural citizenship that relies upon normative belonging with their depiction of LGBTQ and immigrant rights. It also shows how other groups engender what Aimee Carrillo Rowe refers to as “differential belonging,” by directly confronting normative and exclusionary discourses. This paper first justifies linking these two issues by establishing the notion of the “stranger” as a way to describe how both migrants and queers threaten the way the nation state sees itself. It then unpacks both the normative and differential discourses of belonging in relation to two prominent neoliberal values: family values and good citizenship. Finally, this essay considers the implications of differential belonging as a strategy of cultural citizenship that may confront the exclusions that currently constitute the way the US nation-state imagines belonging.  相似文献

Content analyses of prime-time television provide a picture of predominant cultural stereotypes and social trends. The present research is a quantitative content analysis of social class in popular broadcast and cable television in the United States. This research advances scholarship by systematically analyzing character class in addition to more commonly examined variables such as race and gender. A model for the operationalization of class for quantitative content analyses of mediated texts is offered. This proof of concept study demonstrates the viability of studying media representations of class quantitatively to systematically document patterns of portrayal.  相似文献

This work investigates the influence of geographical proximity on the cultivation effect in the context of cultural imperialism. A content analysis of prime-time programming (n=63 hours) is used to compose questions about the prevalence of different occupations in the USA and Israel. A sample of 655 students answered these questions. Viewing of American programming was significantly correlated with a tendency to hold a biased estimation of the prevalence of certain occupations in America in a manner that resembles the world of TV content. Viewing of Israeli programs had no such impact on the estimation of occupation prevalence in Israel. General viewing had no influence on the estimations made about any of the countries.  相似文献

Drawing on key aspects of structuration theory, this case study examines student sensemaking efforts based on an international service learning (ISL) program conducted annually over a period of three years, wherein 11 U.S. students and 2 faculty members worked in a remote village in Moldova, teaching local students and community representatives to operate an online news outlet and interviewing young adults and professionals. Team members also interviewed Moldovan citizens, journalists, and politicians as part of a media research project. We adopted a meta-analytic approach to written student reflections to examine the processes through which students worked to understand cultural differences in a situation characterized by low community capabilities to either problem solve or to be self-sustaining, which further challenged their pre-existing assumptions.  相似文献

A resource dilemma is a circumstance in which an aggregate of people share a slowly replenishing “resource pool” out of which each person can “harvest” a significant amount at any time. In the first study in which the content of relevant discussion is analyzed, participants experienced an experimental simulation of a resource dilemma with either of two replenishment rates. As hypothesized, the higher replenishment rate, in comparison to the lower, was associated with larger total harvests, less variation among participants in points harvested, more positive participant judgments of their experience, and a greater proportion of types of communication content related with successful performance.  相似文献

Drawing on the theory of affective intelligence, the present study considers the prolonged recession in Greece as a major event that increased the levels of people’s anxiety and propelled changes in political communication. The purpose of the study was to analyze the tone and the emotional appeals of 584 political advertisements aired over a decade of economic, social and political turmoil. A comparison of the pre-recession (2004–2009) to the recession period (2010–2015) highlighted that comparative advertising among major political parties increased in times of recession. Variations in the emotional appeals were also identified with major parties focusing on negative emotions, whereas minor parties relied mostly on joyful appeals and the use of humor. The findings indicated that during the recession, campaign strategies seem to aim at the manipulation of people’s emotions, alternating between positive and negative tone of advertisement and between the emotional appeals of joy, humor, anger and fear.  相似文献

本文梳理归纳了负面竞选广告相关研究的切入角度和结论,总结存在的分歧,指明未来研究的方向。综述发现,负面竞选广告研究大都基于西方文化背景和传统媒体,广告的使用受到候选人在任与否、民意支持度、所属政党、竞选阶段和文化的影响;广告发挥了候选人所预期的效果,但也可能产生反弹效果。此外,负面竞选广告对政治参与是促进还是抑制作用,已有研究结果尚存分歧。  相似文献

During natural disasters, mass media facilitate the timely provision of accurate information about health risks to the public. This study informs our understanding of such public health discourse, utilizing a content-analysis of 235 newspaper articles in four major metropolitan newspapers published in the five weeks after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in August 2005. These data reveal that a small and diminishing number of articles included public health information over time, detailed the hurricane impact on affected communities, and used reliable health sources. The implications for future research from a public health and media relations perspective are discussed.  相似文献
