What is the Content of Education in a Democratic Society?

Democratic theory values diversity and pluralism, a market-place of visions und experiences of the good life. Presently conceived, education in democratic societies, because of the assumed requirement of neutrality concerning life choices, deters the flourishing of valuable versions of the good life which are the sine qua non of democratic society. A proposal is made about education which, on the one hand, upholds the relationships of democratic society, but at the same time fosters co-existence with dignity of a plethora of cultural, ideological, ethnic and religious life options.     

建设学习型社会需转变教育观念

在学习型社会创建过程中,教育肩负着重大使命.这种新使命决定了要建设学习型社会必须首先转变教育观念,重建教育是人与社会可持续发展的智慧源泉的教育价值观,重建教育公平是确保社会公平的重要基石的教育公平观,重建为每个公民创造更多更好的学习机会的教育时空观.     

论和谐社会理念在侵权行为法中的体现

目前我国正在制定侵权行为法,而在倡导和谐社会的背景下,这一立法内容应该体现和谐社会的理念.该理念在侵权行为法中的具体表现主要是:和谐社会理念在侵权行为法归责原则中的体现、和谐社会理念在侵权行为法公平和公正价值观中的体现、和谐社会理念在侵权行为案件解决措施中的体现等.侵权行为法对于侵害行为的解决在价值判断的层面上只有符合和谐社会建设的价值需求,才是体现公平和公正法律特点的.     

Using Content Analysis to Compare a U.S. Urban Teacher Residency to a Finnish Teacher Education Program

In the United States, how to provide a high-quality education to all students has been a focal discussion, especially in urban settings. One potential solution that has emerged to confront this issue involves urban teacher residency (UTR) programs that provide innovations concerning the recruitment, preparation, and retention of teachers in high-need urban schools. In this study, we conducted a content analysis and compared steering documents of a UTR program in California with materials from a teacher-training program in Finland. Despite differences in both the legislative and local contexts under which the two programs operate, we found many similarities in both the steering documents and course offerings of these two teacher-training programs. For example, both promote aspects of social justice and are research-based. Furthermore, both offer a variety of types of courses, such as those emphasizing the pedagogical bases of education and research studies in education.

R. S. Peters and J. H. Newman on the Aims of Education

Abstract

R. S. Peters never explicitly talks about wisdom as being an aim of education. He does, however, in numerous places, emphasize that education is of the whole person and that, whatever else it might be about, it involves the development of knowledge and understanding. Being educated, he claims, is incompatible with being narrowly specialized. Moreover, he argues, education enables a person to have a different perspective on things, ‘to travel with a different view’ [Peters, R. S. (1967). What is an educational process? In R. S. Peters (Ed.), The concept of education (pp. 1–23). Routledge and Kegan Paul]. In asserting this about education, Peters has more in common with another great English educator, John Henry, Cardinal Newman, than one might expect, given they are separated by about a century and start from different philosophical perspectives, namely Kant to a significant degree in the former and Aristotle in the latter. Both nevertheless acknowledge the importance of reason and its development in any education worthy of the name. I will argue that in describing the ‘educated person’ Peters is not far from the view of Newman, who saw education as being about the ‘enlargement of mind’. Although Newman hesitates to call ‘enlargement of mind’ wisdom, and Peters does not use either term, there are good grounds for proposing that in distinguishing between education and training, and in asserting education is moral education because it is concerned to improve persons, Peters acknowledges the higher purposes of education and hence, we can add, its connection with wisdom. Significantly, what such a reading of Peters emphasizes is his insistence on the intrinsic value of education, a view seemingly lost in modern market-driven conceptions of education.

20世纪30年代的经济危机给美国高等教育造成了深刻的影响,主要表现为高校在校生人数减少,学生选择发生变化,高校收入大幅下降。为缓解经济萧条对高等教育的影响,政府采取了一系列措施,如增加教育拨款、学生资助等,并取得了良好的效果。当前由美国次贷危机引发的金融危机正日益蔓延。因此,系统总结20世纪30年代经济危机对美国高等教育的影响和措施,对我国高等教育事业的发展具有一定的借鉴意义。     

湖区文化运动及其对美国成人教育的影响

湖区运动(Chautauqua Movement)是美国教育史上一项卓有成效且影响深远的文化普及运动.它融合宗教教育、热门话题演讲和消闲娱乐为一体,在风景秀丽的野外景区开展各种社会交流活动,在19世纪70年代到20世纪20年代期间,吸引了数以百万计的城乡青年人参加.这项运动的两种具体表现形式是湖区学院(Chautauqua institutions)和湖区巡演团(Circuit Chautauqua).湖区学院在函授教育、拓展服务、暑期课程班和大学出版社等方面为传统大学面向社会的改革提供了一定的经验.而湖区巡演团则把当时最新的现代文化生活带到了广大中西部农村地区.湖区运动曾广泛地影响美国人民的社会生活,以至于罗斯福总统曾称之为"美国人第一要事(the most American thing in America)".[1]     

高等教育公平:构建和谐社会的关键

当前和谐社会建设中高等教育公平是重点和难点,高等教育机会均等是核心。高等教育公平总是相对的、暂时的。建立多样性化办学模式,处理好高等教育公平和效率的问题,创建一种和谐的教育环境,从而促进和谐社会建设。     

日、澳两国"重塑教育"项目的经验分析

本文笔者在考察了日本、澳大利亚两国参加“重塑教育”项目学校的教育信息网络建设、教师专业化发展等方面后,将获得的经验进行了总结并对项目的进一步开展提出了建议。
