《曙庵文史续录》自序

《曙庵文史杂著》集结于 1 988年 ,重订于1 993年 ,至 1 998年始得成书问世 ,到 2 1世纪初 ,前后积累者又达数十篇 ,于是有作续集之企划。除近十余年所作者外 ,旧作而未及收集者 ,亦择要收纳之 ,分为上、中二编。又 30年代在陇右地区之见闻 ,甘肃省政协所编之文史资料 ,选用其《陇游日记》4篇 ,于原作有所删减 ,今用原稿 ,列为下编。颜之曰《曙庵文史续录》 ,略示前后相关之意云。清初学者顾亭林有名言 :“文须有益于天下。”顾氏颇能实践其言 ,故其著作为世人所重。然时移世异 ,时代已有所不同 ,彼时所重者 ,或为今日所轻 ;彼时所轻者 ,或…

Clock reading: an underestimated topic in children with mathematics difficulties

Recent studies have shown that children with mathematics difficulties (MD) have weaknesses in multiple areas of mathematics. Andersson, for example, recently found that children with MD perform significantly worse than other children on clock reading tasks. The present study builds on this recent finding and aims at a more profound understanding of the difficulties that children with MD experience with telling time. Therefore, clock reading abilities of 154 children with MD were compared to the abilities of 571 average achieving children, and a qualitative error analysis was performed. The results of this study confirm the earlier findings of Andersson that children with MD perform worse on clock reading than average achieving children and also show that children with MD especially struggle with the combination of procedural and retrieval strategies that are needed to read complex 5-min and 1-min clock times. Children with MD make more errors, which reflects immature counting strategies and deficits in memory retrieval. This finding is in line with Geary's theory of subtypes in MD, which argues that children with MD have problems with mathematical procedures and semantic memory retrieval.     

Politics in fiction and film: An interdisciplinary approach to an abstract topic

Politics is a difficult idea to relate to students. In a team-taught course that uses political novels and films, the concept of politics becomes more understandable to the students. Three different instructors representing Political Science, English and Film bring expertise to the course that is usually not possible when a single instructor tries to incorporate separate disciplines into one course. Although some administrative and departmental problems may prevent this type of course from achieving wide popularity on college campuses, it has proven to be successful with students as well as with the instructors who teach it.Michael George Krukones is a professor in the Department of Political Science at Bellarmine College in Louisville, Kentucky. The Semiotics of Education: A new vision in an old landscape

In this article, I attempt to describe how certain theoretical constructions of semiotics could be applied in educational theoretical work. First I introduce meaning as a basic concept of semiotics, thus also touching on concepts such as action, competence and causality. I am then able to define learning as a change of competences, and also refer to the pedagogical concept of learning i.e. Bildung, which can be roughly defined as valuable human learning. I then take up the problem of education as pedagogical direction and communication. Finally, I conclude with some considerations on the famous Greimassian semiotic square.
