Skill Sets for the Human Performance Technologist Originally published in 1995, PIQ 8.2

Demand for human performance technology (HPT) practitioners is growing at the same time as their numbers are increasing. Yet no standard repertoire of professional skills exists, nor is thei:e any agency with authority to define required skill sets. A number of sources do, however, offer guidelines. These are observation of current practice, a rich and expanding literature, professional societies, recognized practitioners and knowledgeable clients. These sources provide us with strong indicators as to what constitute skill sets for both current and future practice. This article presents suggested basic and advanced skill sets, identifies future skill needs, and concludes with suggestions for maintaining and enhancing proficiency as a human performance technologist.     

The Continuous Learning Journey of a Certified Performance Technologist

In this article the author, a certified performance technologist (CPT), explains what led him to pursue the CPT designation and what he has learned since then. His learning journey is framed by the three phases of Shu‐Ha‐Ri, a martial arts concept. He tells of how he developed a foundational proficiency with the CPT performance standards before truly understanding the principles and foundational concepts behind the practices associated with the standards. In his early days, he studied the work of performance improvement masters and practiced their techniques, both interpersonal and analytical. In the years after earning the CPT designation, he strove for true mastery in applying hybrid techniques or ones of his own invention, all grounded in the CPT principles.

Cognitive Style and Motor Skill and Sports Performance

A pool of 116 14-18-year-old secondary school pupils who had been given the computer-presented Cognitive Styles Analysis was used to provide two sub-samples to explore the relationship between style and motor skills and sports performance. The Motor Skills sub-sample of 69 (32 males and 37 females) did a battery of motor skills tests. A factor analysis suggested four skills factors - bodily movement, interactive skills, mechanical skills and aiming. All of these except the mechanical skills showed a significant relationship to style. The Sports Performance sub-sample of 99 (46 males and 53 females) were rated on a five-point scale by their teachers on performance in rugby, soccer and cricket for the boys, and hockey, netball and tennis for the girls. Here, there was a significant effect of style for tennis but not for the team games. The findings were discussed in terms of their practical implications.     

Performance Technologist Preparation: The Role of Leadership Theory Originally published in 1995, PIQ 8.4

This article explores the unique positioning of leadership theory and literature as a unifying and informing discipline for the preparation of performance technologists. Although the role of leadership could be emphasized in any of the settings in which performance technologists become skilled, university departments of educational leadership seem especially suited for programs with this emphasis. A sample course activity is shared and linked to the building of leadership skills. The purpose of this article is to describe the importance of leadership as an informing and unifying discipline for the preparation of performance technologists and to explore the impact of this orientation on performance technologist preparation.     

A Metaphorical Model for Human Performance

Thermodynamics is a science that models the world by observing changes and makes assumptions based on this approach. The methodology that thermodynamics applies is to model abstract concepts that employ unique techniques for solving problems. Human performance technology (HPT) can be more of a science by bringing together in a similar way a set of fundamental principles, methods, and a model to form an integrated methodology. This article simulates a metaphorical model for human performance based upon the thermodynamic methodology.

Examining the Practice of Human Performance Technology

Despite the fact that Human Performance Technology (HPT) has proved itself as a systemic, systematic process for increasing performance and profitability in organizations, it has not yet been widely adopted. There are several reasons for this. The conditions that must exist for organizations to benefit from all HPT can offer them are lacking. First, few individuals have the knowledge and skill necessary to implement the methods, measures, and models of HPT, and second, those who do seldom have the opportunity and authority to apply HPT where it will most benefit the organization. This article takes a look at such barriers to successful HPT practice, and how they can be overcome. It reports the findings of a survey of academics, internal practitioners, and external consultants who are members of NSPI who were asked to report on what opportunities exist for learning about HPT, where it is practiced in organizations and by whom, and what role management plays in implementing HPT within organizations. The article also suggests ways of addressing the barriers identified.

Changing Roles and Professional Challenges for Human Performance Technology

From its roots in behavioral science and instructional systems design, the field of human performance technology has broadened significantly during the past three decades in terms of its interventions and the backgrounds and skills areas of its practitioners. This development brings with it many questions as to the field's definition, theoretical underpinnings, and future developments in research and practice. A brief review of the history of HPT, a survey of some of its leaders, and a model of the roots and branches of the field are presented.
