All About Whom? Stock Photos,Interactive Narratives and How News About Governmental Surveillance Is Visualized

A two-stage analysis examined visuals in news related to governmental surveillance, finding that just as surveillance has shifted from visual evidence to dataveillance, journalism is shifting its notion of visual evidence from photojournalism to journalistic data representations. First, a card sort analysis of news visuals was conducted on two news sites before and after Edward Snowden's document leak in June 2013. The news images remained relatively consistent, relying heavily on accessible official and stock photography sources. Second, a review of The Guardian's contemporaneous “NSA Files: Decoded” multimedia package found personalized, data-rich visual storytelling techniques. Between the two approaches is a vast difference in how surveillance is represented and made accessible, with implications for the visual coverage of other challenging news topics.     

多媒体信息发布系统在大学图书馆的设计与应用——以清华大学人文社科图书馆为例

多媒体信息发布系统是一种应用型媒体整合传播系统,它是直接面向用户提供公共服务、保障信息畅通的重要手段。作为一座新近建设的图书馆,清华大学人文社科图书馆设计并应用了多媒体信息发布系统。该系统主要包括节目编辑和发送、节目管理和发布两大模块,其发布内容融合了多种媒体信息资料,在图书馆各功能区域得到广泛应用,取得了良好成效。在设计与应用多媒体信息发布系统的过程中,我们应对多媒体信息发布系统的优缺点有清晰认识,要在充分发挥多媒体信息发布系统优势的同时,实现多媒体信息发布系统与其他媒体的优势互补。     

Teaching Multimedia Documents to LIS Students

Multimedia documents (MMDs) are connected to education in two different ways: future professionals have to be educated to perform the complex task of multimedia creation, and multimedia is also successfully used in various phases of the educational process. This paper focuses on education for multimedia from the point of view of four of its different aspects: technology, design, purpose and content. The present status of education for multimedia is illustrated by an analysis of the academic scene in Serbia and neighboring countries, as well as through some other illustrative examples. The results of this analysis show that the content aspect of multimedia is covered mainly in the Library and Information Science (LIS) curricula. We present the place of the obligatory course Multimedia Document in the LIS curriculum at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade. It is organized as a team project of a whole generation of students in the last year of their studies, where each generation has to tackle a different topic important from the perspective of preservation of cultural heritage and present it in a multimedia form. In this paper, we show how successful this approach has been, both from teachers' and students' point of view.     

Using emotion recognition technology to assess the effects of different multimedia materials on learning emotion and performance

With the gradual adoption of multimedia technologies in curriculum designs, the need has increased for in-depth studies that explore how different presentation techniques for multimedia materials affect learner emotions and learner performance. This study employed the emWave system, a stress detector for emotional states that was developed by the Institute of HeartMath for measuring changes in learner emotional states when presented with different multimedia materials with the same learning content. By analyzing the collected emotional data and assessment of learning performance, this study explores how different multimedia learning materials affect learning emotions, and ultimately, learning performance. Preliminary results show that the video-based multimedia material generates the best learning performance and most positive emotion among three types of multimedia materials assessed in the study. Moreover, a partial correlation exists between negative learning emotion and learning performance. This study confirms that simultaneously considering pretest score and negative emotion can predict learning performance of learners who use video-based multimedia material for learning. It also finds significant gender difference in learner emotional states while using different multimedia materials for learning: female learners in this study are more easily affected by different multimedia material than male learners.

为更有效地对多媒体信息进行检索,在设计多媒体信息检索系统时人们开始更加注重用户的信息需求。本文设计一种新的检索方法对用户信息需求进行集成,即把用户的信息需求集成到信息检索结果的“语用环境”中。通过使用该方法,可以对多媒体信息检索中的用户需求进行更有效的集成。

Multimedia Science Kits: A Museum Project on Women Scientists and Their Research

The University of Nebraska State Museum (UNSM) is creating multimedia outreach kits on the research of women scientists. The collaborative effort has included Nebraska Educational Telecommunications, curricula developers, biographers, graphic designers, and evaluators. The goal of the project is to increase the number of girls interested in pursuing careers in science, and to this end, women scientists are presented as role models. Wonderwise kits target students in grades four through six through student-centered, inquiry-based activities, specimens and tools, videos of the scientists working in the field, resource-based CD-ROMs, and short biographies of the scientists. This project presents a model of how museums can collaborate with schools to improve science education on a statewide basis.

Service learning in the library and information science curriculum: The perspectives and experiences of one Multimedia/User Education class

This article provides a case study of a class project in Multimedia/User Education in the Library and Information Science program at the University of Iowa. The goals of the class were to develop multimedia skills, develop conceptual models for implementing multimedia in libraries, and develop a culture of collaborative teaching and learning within the group of students who were enrolled. The course used service learning pedagogy to achieve these ends. Students developed web sites for public libraries in Iowa that, in many cases, are used in those libraries. In this article, the instructor of the course describes the design of the class, and the students contribute their observations about the service learning experience.     

Artwork as Interface

Artworks are highly coded power objects. At best, they serve aswindows onto profound and unspeakable experience; at worst,they're simply ``wall obstructions.'' In this paper, two issueswill be addressed: (1) What do artists, in their role asextremely subtle information designers, have to teach us abouthow deep knowledge is conveyed? What do their visual strategiesteach us about interface? And (2) how can a digital program bedesigned that respects the properties inherent in each artwork,and yet harnesses the power of multimedia to make connectionsacross space and time?

A new bmj.com: now with added Drupal

This case study describes a two year co‐development project involving BMJ Group and HighWire Press to redesign and migrate the company's flagship website, bmj.com , to Drupal. The new site went live in November 2011. The project achieved its five main objectives: (i) to boost discoverability of new content; (ii) increase user engagement; (iii) increase traffic; (iv) promote the site's channels (research, education, comment, news, multimedia, specialties); and (v) drive referrals to other BMJ Group product sites.

Library as the Technology Hub for the Health Sciences

Abstract

Academic health sciences libraries have an important role in facilitating the use of technology in health sciences curricula. Serving as a technology hub, the library supports, advocates, and provides access to new technologies. The library introduces many faculty and students to new technology tools, techniques, and equipment for new multimedia creation. As the technology hub grows and expands, library personnel can provide expertise, which demonstrates the library's value in leading the exploration of new technology, including Do-It-Yourself multimedia tools, virtual reality, virtual anatomy, and 3D printing.     

Is Your Tutorial Pretty or Pretty Useless? Creating Effective Tutorials with the Principles of Multimedia Learning

ABSTRACT

With the proliferation of free and easy-to-use tools to make online tutorials, many libraries have been creating online tutorials for their users. These cover everything from showing users how to navigate the databases to covering issues like copyright and evaluation. While the tutorials range from entertaining to rather dry, many of them, regardless of their entertainment value, do not employ the methods that can lead to deeper learning. Mayer (2014a Mayer, R. E. (Ed.). (2014a). The Cambridge handbook of multimedia learning. New York, NY: Cambridge University Press. [Google Scholar]) has explored the concepts and research around online tutorials in The Cambridge Handbook of Multimedia Learning. The principles covered in the handbook and in the related research can be quite counterintuitive for those of us who create online tutorials. This article explores these principles as they relate to tutorials created for library instruction. Additional research to expand on and support Mayer's principles will be discussed to provide evidence-based strategies for deepening learning and reducing elements that detract from learning.     

Chinese Newspaper Ownership,Corporate Strategies,and Business Models in a Globalizing World

This study takes Beijing Youth Daily (BYD), Beijing's largest newspaper in terms of advertising revenue and second largest in terms of circulation, as a case study to examine and analyze how globalization influences the ownership, corporate strategies, and business models of local newspaper organizations in China; and, thus, accelerates Chinese-style capitalism and media convergence. Declining advertising revenue and the loss of readers due to the digital revolution and the availability of multimedia news channels are global challenges that face newspapers around the world. BYD is no exception. In response, BYD has shifted from an exclusively state ownership model to a split or dual-track management model that has allowed foreign capital into the business operations while the party/state still retains ideological control over the news content. BYD has reoriented its corporate strategies and carried out structural reforms, building a media conglomerate via new titles, acquisitions, concentrations, and convergences; and developed its business models with advertising as a major revenue source. All these measures are market-oriented and intended to maximize newspaper profits by pursuing economies of scale and scope.     

多媒体网络舆情危机响应机理及风险分型研究

[目的/意义]针对当前我国多媒体网络舆情响应问题，梳理并提出以危机风险分型为基础的政府组织响应路径整合匹配、响应工作流程模型构建机理，以期为管理决策者提升资源整合能力、网络舆情危机精准响应效力提供参考。[方法/过程]对大数据环境下网络舆情危机动力要素的作用进行分析，提取出网络舆情危机风险分型的基础系数，并以多元结构网络舆情信息的多媒体传播路径为视角提取网络舆情危机风险分型叠加系数，再逐一提取各风险分型下网络舆情危机响应的工作要点。[结果/结论]根据主体结构要素、媒体效力要素、客体属性要素危机作用形态的排序组合，在其关系节点上建立多媒体网络舆情危机等级基数。根据本体成分分化后对舆情危机的不同影响效果，建立多媒体网络舆情危机加成系数。建立多媒体网络舆情危机风险分型模型，将舆情危机风险解构为等级系数和加成系数。从而更为准确地描述舆情危机的表征，有利于判断舆情危机的未来发展态势，提高与既往舆情危机案例匹配的速度与精准度。
