垂悬修饰语是指在句中同其他词没有明显关系的词或词组.一般语法书在述说该语法现象时提到v-ing形式,实际上,垂悬修饰语尚有动词不定式、介词短语、同位语短语及从句等.一般说来,垂悬修饰语多出现在句首,因其逻辑主语与旬中的主语不能一致而导致语义关系不明,逻辑关系不清,如"Looking out of the window,the cow was seeneating grass in the rields.按语法规则,分词短语"looking out of the window"的逻辑主语应是句中的主语,故例句的主语应是"the cow"了.此旬的语病在于,即使"the cow"能发出"looking"之动作,但因它在"田间吃草"而不可能再从"窗外望去".由此可见,"looking"只能是人所为之了.但原句中我们看不到有何人称的词语出现,这样,"looking outof the window"就成了无依着的修饰语,从而使句中的逻辑关系不清.再看以下几例病句:
