Loud voice: Immediate effects upon the speaker

While awaiting the arrival of the experimenter, pairs of subjects participated in ten minutes of spontaneous casual interaction. The impression which each formed of the other was assessed. Analyses of these impressions compared subjects differing in initial level of cognitive complexity. High complexity subjects, in comparison with noncomplex subjects, formed more differentiated, more abstract, more highly organized, and less evaluatively polarized interpersonal impressions. These differences, consistent with the results of related research not based on direct social communication, are interpreted as supporting a cognitive‐developmental approach to impression formation.

The article provides a detailed account of the challenges of an information professional in a special library. Reference has been made to a developing country simply because librarians in the third world have yet to be accorded proper recognition in the society. In an attempt to understand the environment in which a special librarian operates, definitions and characteristics of special libraries have been attempted. In the final analysis, it is evident that the challenges of a special librarian are by far different from those of his colleagues in other libraries, e.g. academic and public libraries.

The Classification of Biographical Dictionaries in Reference Collections Using the Library of Congress Classification System

The Library of Congress classification system distributes biographical works throughout the collection, a result of questionable desirability for reference collections. A practical method for bringing biographical dictionaries together in one section of the reference shelves is the use of alternative class numbers printed in the CT schedule. The application of this method by the Library of the University of Wisconsin- Parkside is discussed as a case study.
