A unique attribute of Earth is the presence of plate tectonics. Not only does it give rise to continents, mountain chains, and ocean basins but also promotes a high level of biodiversity. It is the reason for the formation of the so-called ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’ – a belt of intense volcanic activity and a large number of earthquakes surrounding the Pacific ocean. But what drives the plate motion? Did Earth always have plate tectonics? These are some fascinating geoscientific questions. In trying to answer these questions, an effort is made to impress upon the reader the vast ocean of uncertainty, and hence the opportunity, in the field of Earth and Planetary Sciences. To make it more engaging, the article provides a peek into the long process which culminated in the present-day theory of plate tectonics on Earth. While the first half of the article focuses on subduction and its cause, the second half summarizes a recent finding made on the surface of Europa. Earthquakes occur as the natural outcome of the processes that govern a dynamic planet, one that supports plate motions. The internal structure of the Earth that can sustain the convective -ow of the mantle and the presence of a strong, fractured outer shell, the lithosphere that can glide over the underlying asthenosphere are important components of the plate tectonic framework, and therefore, the global distribution of earthquakes. With an introduction to the ideas of plate tectonics and earthquake terminology, this article introduces the significance of the India-Eurasia plate boundary and its seismic productivity. The most active continent-continent collision boundary on the Earth defined by the Himalaya and the Andaman-Sumatra subduction zone are part of this plate boundary. Parts of the Indian continental interior regions are also noted for some destructive earthquakes. This article provides a brief overview of the background processes, terminology, and some highlights on Indian earthquakes studies, and points to academic opportunities in the area of earthquake studies. 相似文献

Current high school Earth Science curricula and textbooks organize scientific content into isolated “units” of knowledge. Within this structure, content is taught, but in the absence of the context of fundamental understandings or the process of how the science was actually done to reach the conclusions. These are two key facets of scientific literacy. I have developed curriculum from a historical perspective that addresses two particular units of study in Earth Science (“geologic time” and “plate tectonics”). The curriculum traces the evolution of the theory of plate tectonics. It includes contextualized experiences for students such as telling stories, utilizing original historical texts, narratives, and essential questions, to name a few. All of the strategies are utilized with the goal of building understanding around a small set of common themes. Exploring the historical models in this way allows students to analyze the models, while looking for limitations and misconceptions. This methodology is used to encourage students to develop more scientifically accurate understandings about the way in which the world and the process of scientific discovery work. Observations of high student engagement during the utilization of this contextualized approach has demonstrated that a positive effect on student understanding is promising. 相似文献

Young-earth creationism has undergone a shift in emphasis toward building of historical models that incorporate Biblical and
scientific evidence and the acceptance of scientific conclusions that were formerly rejected. The RATE Group admitted that
massive amounts of radioactive decay occurred during earth history but proposed a period of accelerated decay during Noah’s
Flood to fit the resulting history into a young-earth timeframe. Finding a mechanism for the acceleration and dealing with
the excessive heat and radiation it would generate posed major problems for the project. Catastrophic plate tectonics was
proposed to explain continental movements in a short timeframe and serve as a trigger for Noah’s Flood, but other creationists
rejected the idea citing hopeless chronological problems. Creationists have also sought to explain the order of the fossil
record and the Ice Age in a young-earth timeframe. An examination of these efforts demonstrates the anti-scientific nature

理清夫兰克—赫兹实验与玻尔理论的历史渊源,一些著名的原子物理学的教材中存在的对夫兰克—赫兹实验与玻尔理论的关系存在理解误区,大部分教材很容易让人误认为是在玻尔理论提出之后才有夫兰克—赫兹实验,实则不然.从理论上分析炉温的升高,电子与汞原子发生碰撞的概率增大,导致板极电流相应地减小.发射电压增大,由于单位时间发射的电子数增加,碰撞概率不变,所以板极电流相应增大.随着栅极电压的增加,由于电子初速度的增加,在通过KG空间时,与汞原子的碰撞概率减少,因此板极电流峰值增大. 相似文献
