The Videodisc in Classroom Teaching

Abstract

This article consists of a report on a research project set up in the Federal Republic of Germany to look into the potential applications of new systems and technologies in the field of education. The various functions and possible uses of videodiscs are considered in some detail before conclusions are outlined concerning the current position of the integration of the videodisc into the education system.     

European research on media and technology in education: current status and future directions

This chapter surveys a number of developments in media and mass communication research and presents results that are important for educational research on teaching and learning. In many European countries, disparate research areas have investigated questions which focus on learning from both mass media and ‘instructional’ media use in schools and in the community. Our emphasis in this chapter will be on current examples drawn primarily from the German context but which we feel are typical of general European perspectives on media research which is oriented toward the new ‘cognitive’ psychology of learning. After an overview that describes many directions and theories, a specific example of studies from our own laboratory will be presented.     

Videodisc: should broadcasters be interested?

The optical videodisc was developed as a domestic and educational video source, but Maryland Interactive Technologies is investigating several unexpected but promising applications in broadcast television practice and is designing a pilot videodisc to put those applications to the test     

Using Interactive Videodisc in Training Contexts

Interactive videodisc (IVD) represents the fusion of video and microcomputer technology so as to exploit the strengths of each whilst minimising the weaknesses of each. Research related to IVD is reviewed here to establish learner effectiveness, user acceptance, training time savings, design considerations, cost considerations and the contribution of interactivity. Implications for teaching and learning are explored.

Education for work: The current dilemma of post-compulsory education

The human capital emphasis in recent economic planning is leading to new pressures on the post-compulsory education sector where work-readiness is emerging as a major focus. With concerns about the impact of demographic change as the population ages, there is a renewed emphasis on greater productivity from and less wastage of human capital. Hence retention of young people in the education and training system to at least Year 12 and the development of explicit vocational pathways has become an urgent priority for educators to address. The dilemma is that uncertainties in the future nature and demands of work have to be addressed here and now, while the lead time and costs to produce work ready students is increasing. This paper considers the characteristics of early school leavers in NSW and the strategies developed in that State to re-engage such students in the education system to increase their opportunities for workforce participation.
