History of medicine on the Internet: resources for librarians

This paper offers an inventory of resources on the history of medicine on the Internet. Some sites are bibliographic; they supply book and journal citations. Some provide leads (or links) to more specific information, and some include full-text articles or historical essays. Because this material is intended to furnish librarians with reference direction, more attention is given to bibliographic and "linked" sites.     

Internet resources for Tibetan medicine

Tibetan medicine has a history of over one thousand years. With the recent fascination with Tibet and Tibetan culture, Tibetan medicine is receiving greater attention from the public, scholars, and the media. In the past few years, researchers and practitioners of Tibetan medicine have established a presence on the Internet, evident through Web sites and discussion groups. This paper presents a sampling of valuable resources about Tibetan medicine readily accessible on the Internet. The selected sites were evaluated on the basis of quality and quantity of information, authoritativeness, currency of material, quality of links, and navigability.     

Genetic information resources: a new field for medical librarians

The Human Genome Project is generating unprecedented quantities of new genetic information. The new discipline of bioinformatics has created many new molecular biology databanks to store the results of the Human Genome Project. This data is expected to be the information source for biomedical science in the 21st century. As molecular biology research moves out of the laboratory and becomes molecular medicine, a growing number of people need access to genetic information. Medical students, healthcare practitioners and patients need help in finding appropriate information. Medical librarians should know how to search key genetic information resources and should have a basic understanding of the type of information contained in each.     

Integrating knowledge resources at the point of care: opportunities for librarians.

Health sciences librarians at the University of Washington (UW) are partners in the evolution of Internet-based clinical information systems for two medical centers, University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center, as well as the UW Primary Care Network clinics. Librarians lead information resource and systems development projects and play a variety of roles including facilitator, publisher, integrator, and educator. These efforts have been coordinated with parallel development efforts by the Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems (IAIMS) clinical informatics group in developing electronic medical record systems and clinical decision support tools. The outcome is MINDscape, a very heavily used Web view of the patient medical record with tightly integrated knowledge resources as well as numerous Web-accessible information resources and tools. The goal of this article is to provide a case study of librarian involvement in institutional information systems development at UW and to illustrate the variety of roles that librarians can assume in hospital settings.     

Introducing health sciences librarians to the Internet

The Internet is no longer just for the adventurous explorers or the technical experts--it has found its way into the mainstream of librarianship. New users are coming onto "the net" in droves. A wealth of information is currently available dealing with the mechanics of the Internet and there are general guides to the available resources. More work needs to be done, however, in developing subject specific materials. This paper will report on the strategy that Scott Memorial Library, Thomas Jefferson University, has employed to develop staff skills and awareness and to take advantage of the resources and opportunities that the network provides for the health sciences community.     

Health resources on the Internet: a basic list

With the plethora of health sites on the Internet, it is sometimes hard to know where to start. This is a basic list of health sites that either cover a subject area comprehensively, or are good general sites to lead to more specific information. Most of these sites include both full-text information as well as links to many other sites on the World-Wide Web. Included are medical, nursing, dental, alternative health, consumer health, organization, and government sites.     

The role of the family history in preventive medicine: an introduction for medical librarians.

Health professionals are collecting and charting data about the family history of their patients in order to determine if a predisposition to heart, stroke, cancer and other debilitating conditions can be detected or alleviated through patient education and preventive medicine. Family history-taking for the purposes of preventive medicine is introduced, along with a brief history of the field. The pedigree chart and the genogram are described and their use by health personnel is discussed. A brief search strategy on MEDLINE and a selected bibliography are presented to aid the health sciences librarian to find information on the family history, genograms or pedigree charts.     

Free medical news and current event Internet sites for medical librarians

The world of medical advancements is moving at a record pace. New drug approvals, important discoveries, and the explosion of consumer information on the Web have prompted health professionals with the need to keep current with the latest news stories in order to satisfy patient questions. The medical librarian who keeps up with the latest medical news is a valuable resource for all health professionals. The following is a compilation of sites for medical news available on the Web. The sites are limited to those that do not charge a fee and that direct the user immediately to top health stories, as opposed to requiring the use of a search feature. This list is not exhaustive; rather, it represents some of the more common news sources.

In the last ten years, there has been an upsurge of interest in matters related to improving care at the end of life. This article presents a brief overview of hospice, a type of interdisciplinary end-of-life care that aims to relieve the pain and symptoms of the dying, support the family during the process, and offer bereavement assistance afterward. Useful Web sites related to hospice and grief intended for the use of health care professionals and consumers are identified and described.
