在我国,竹是人们最喜爱的植物之一.它未出土时先有节,到凌云处仍虚心,诗人赞美它岁寒不凋的性格,画家描绘它飘逸潇洒的身影.魏晋时期有阮籍、山涛等七人,相与友善,游于竹林,称为"竹林七贤".唐朝诗人李白与孔巢父等六人,共隐于徂徕山,酣酒纵歌,时号"竹林六逸".自古以来,竹与松、梅一起被人们称为"岁寒三友",象征高洁、坚贞的品质和勇于献身的精神.     

Reaping the Whirlwind: The Wind That Shakes the Barley,Liberation and After in the Movies

Popular culture includes stories that define and justify the existence of groups and nations. Among those stories are creation accounts, especially stories of the forming of nations through struggles for liberation from oppression. The useful liberation myths are exemplified by two recent films: V for Vendetta and Children of Men. Another recent film, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, gives a sober and nuanced account of the Irish Rebellion. It includes the ambiguities of liberation events and the problems that arise and continue after the glorious moment of liberation.

The Poet and Daughter of the Sea: Animated Ships in Andalusian Arabic Poetry

The Mediterranean Sea has stirred the imagination of Andalusian poets of the tenth and eleventh centuries. They wrote many poetic maritime scenes with lively details about sea and ships. Describing ships as camels ranging over the land is the central core-image of these scenes. The poets’ perspective of ships reveals their unique character and aspires to an aesthetic truth. This article will concern itself with some of the ships’ depictions in Andalusian Arabic poetry, and will illustrate, in particular, the ways by which poets refer to the ships’ external characteristics in order to represent them as animated beings in the sea vista. These epithets coincide with the medieval perception of animals that generally particularize their appearance by some qualitative characteristics. By means of some of animal epithets like physiological features, anatomical references, behavioural traits and feminine characters, poets succeeded in referring to ships as the most animated objects on the maritime scene.     

Sicily: A Frontier in the Centre of the Sea?

ABSTRACT

As part of the Ancient Maritime Dynamics project, this study uses a new interpretive methodology to model the creation and use of maritime places in the western-Mediterranean basin. In turn, the results of this modelling suggest that the waters around the island of Sicily acted as a frontier, distinguishing a distinct zone of activity in the western Mediterranean as well as a western maritime community that segregated itself from other sailors and merchants elsewhere in the sea.     

清代徽商的《弄月嘲风》

明清以来的徽商素以“贾而好儒”称于世，他们于经商余暇，颇多附风倡雅，舞弄墨。特别是那些富商大贾(如淮扬盐商)与人墨客诗酒宴、吟风弄月的诗，早已为学界耳熟能详。相比之下，下层徽商的诗则甚少发现。     

南朝遗风今犹在——广西南丹白裤瑶寨见闻录

2001年盛夏，笔者应邀参加广西南丹白裤瑶民俗研讨会，并参观访问了该县所属的里湖、八圩瑶族乡。依据所见所闻，我发现《隋书·地理志下》所记荆州“盘瓠蛮”俗竟在今日白裤瑶中重现。因隋朝统一时间极短，故《地理志》中所记民俗，多溯“自晋氏南迁之后”，如此南丹白裤瑶民俗距今已有1600年历史了。“刺盘瓠”与“欢饮”丧葬礼仪《隋书·地理志下》记荆州“蛮左”二次葬俗云：当葬之时，各执竹竿，长一丈许，上三四尺许，犹带枝叶。其行伍前却，皆有节奏，歌吟叫呼，亦有章曲。传云盘瓠初死，置之于树，乃以竹木刺而下之， 故相承至今，…     

Common Declaration on the Protection of Cultural Heritage in the Maritime Silk Road of South China Sea Released

A seminar on the protection of cultural heritage in the maritime Silk Road of South China Sea was held in Haikou, capital city of Hainan province on June 21. Representatives from 37 research institutes, local bureaus for cultural heritage, and museums from across the country jointly released the Common Declaration on the Protection of Cultural Heritage in the Maritime Silk Road of South China Sea.     

After the Fall: Awakening from the Dream in The Rider and Red Sparrow

Two recent movies, The Rider and Red Sparrow, are in contrast to a large number of movies celebrating the triumph of afflicted persons over obstacles that seem insurmountable. Through commitment, hard work, and determination, these characters are able to do the impossible. However, these two movies instead focus on the dire consequences of an inability to overcome obstacles. This change may reflect an increasing pessimism about current challenges and individuals’ ability to meet them.     

The Expulsion of the Muslims from Portugal (1496–1497)

The expulsion of the Muslim minority from Portugal, decreed by King Manuel I in December 1496, has been one of the most overlooked aspects of the end of religious tolerance in the Iberian Peninsula at the close of the Middle Ages. Using unedited documentary sources preserved in the national Portuguese archives, this article focuses on the expulsion of the Muslims from Portugal and seeks to challenge a number of assumptions concerning this unprecedented event. Three major questions concerning this expulsion are examined. What evidence is there that the expulsion of the Muslims did take place? Where did the expelled Muslims seek refuge? What were the causes of this expulsion? This article will endeavour to present a new hypothesis relating to the causes of this expulsion, which radically differs from that advanced by modern historians.     

The cultural value of heritage: evidence from the Heritage Lottery Fund

The Heritage Lottery Fund has, over the past 13 years, given £4billion to heritage projects of all kinds. As the Fund has matured a greater emphasis has been placed on the evaluation of the social and economic outcomes of this funding. In 2004 we reported on progress with evaluation of the programmes targeted at particular types of heritage (Clark, 2004 Clark, K. 2004. Why fund heritage? The role of research in the Heritage Lottery Fund. Cultural Trends, 52: 65–85.  [Google Scholar]). The greater challenge has been to evaluate the outcomes from the Fund's generic programmes, which can fund any type of heritage and which between them account for over two-thirds of total funding. This article reviews the Fund's experience over the last 3 years in developing and implementing an evaluation system using the Public (or Cultural) Value framework. It presents some initial results from the research so far completed and reviews how far the framework has been useful in suggesting research priorities and organizing findings.
