Language is the means by which people communicate with each other. At present, the teaching of listening is considered one of the most important teaching courses. Listening greatly affects communicative ability. For this reason, it is necessary for students to break through obstacles to the listening to improve their abilities. In recent years, theories have been put forward in the teaching of listening. The focus of attention has shifted from the teachers, who have tended to be the center of the class to the students. Listening and spoken English are the key features of English classes. As English teachers, we should devote ourselves to the reforms of teaching systems and develop suitable teaching methods so that we could improve the quality of listening teaching.

Approaches to College English Pronunciation Teaching

In most universities in China,pronunciation has long been overlooked in college English teaching.With the reform of college English teaching,great attention has been paid to the cultivation of the students’ listening and speaking skills,that is,Eng lish teaching has moved to language functions and communicative competencies,a new urgency for the teaching of pronuncia tion has arisen.This paper covers the four areas of pronunciation:sounds,stress,rhythm,and intonation,with the expectation that it will provide readers with comprehensive insight into ways of teaching pronunciation.     

On Vocational Students’Listening Obstacles and Strategies

English listening is one of the most important but the most difficult parts in English teaching. It is not only the main way of acquiring language information , but the base of improving other skills. However, during the College English teaching and learning process, teaching of listening has been the difficult point, troubling teachers and students, So, improving students’ listening skill is the current problem to be solved by the teachers. In this article, based on my observations, questionnaires and interviews in classes for many years, I found out some barriers of English listening existing among my students. Therefore, I put forward some listening teaching strategies and methods to improve College students’ listening skill.     

A Listening and Speaking Lesson Design for EFL Undergraduates in China

Freshmen and sophomores in universities of China usually have Listening and Speaking class.A two-period listening and speaking lesson is designed by taking full use of the teaching material and taking the modern listening and speaking teaching theories into consideration.     

A Brief Discussion on the Chinese College English Language Curriculum for the Non-English Major Learners

Chinese college English Language Curriculum is a complicated teaching system combined with a variety of teaching modes and teaching methodologies. It is guided by foreign language teaching theories and takes the English language knowledge and application skills, cross-cultural communication and learning strategies as its main content. In addition, as the main basis of English education for non-English major undergraduates in colleges and universities, this curriculum helps to cultivate students’ English comprehensive application ability, especially for their listening and speaking skills while improving their abilities of selfeducation. It can also strengthen learners’ comprehensive cultural quality in order to meet the need of social development and international communication.     

Application of Schema Theory to English Listening Teaching in Middle School

This paper from the point of view of cognitive psychology,which is based on the background of the Chinese middle school students’generally low ability of English listening,it explores the listening course of English language teaching which guided by Schema theory and summarizes the connotation of this theory then discusses the role of it to listening comprehension and the practical value of combining listening teaching with it.The paper also puts forward the strategy of implementation of the theory.This article aims to make students to realize the importance of background knowledge to help them to understand the listening materials and to guide the students using different strategies of Schema theory to improve their listening comprehension ability.     

Some Thoughts on Improvement of English Listening Instruction

The teaching of English listening has long been limited to the textbooks and tapes,which has surely led to a lot of demerits in teaching listening up to now.So at present,it's very important to improve the following eight aspects of teaching listening:teachers,textbooks,relationship between teachers and students,equipments,application of schematic theory,combination of listening and speaking,listening tests and teaching English listening through movies for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of listening teaching.Among them,the last aspect,namely,teaching English listening through movies is emphasized.     

The Implementation of Task-based Language Teaching Approach in EFL Oral English Teaching in Art Academy

Present English learning and teaching in colleges especially in Art Academy is far from satisfactory.English,as one of the most important international languages,plays a more and more important role in the international communication.In this paper,the author tries to apply TBLT(Task-based Language Teaching) to oral English teaching.The experiment chose 102 freshmen of two classes in College of Broadcasting and Hosting in CUCN(Communication University of China,Nanjing) as subjects,lasting 16 weeks all together.In the experimental class,the participants are taught with the new method with the aid of TBLT,while in the controlled class,the traditional approach was utilized.By means of data analysis and daily observation of teaching experiment,with the help of the software SPSS and MATLAB,the comparison of both class and of the EC before and after the experiment has verified that the new method with the aid of TBLT has a more positive effect in improving students’oral proficiency,es pecially for students who had a poor performance in speaking before.     

On Cultivating Students’ Ability of Listening Comprehension in Senior High School in the Northwest of Guangxi

Nowadays, the role of listening course is changed and listening teaching begins to gain high priority in foreign language learning and teaching. However, the English level of students in China is still poor, especially in the northwest of Guangxi. One of the reasons is that teachers in senior high schools have a tendency to ignore listening, because they think that listening is time-consumed. They have to finish the teaching scheme punctually, though listening is the basic and important skill among the other three skills, listening teaching gains no large progress.     

Should ESL Classes Never Mention Religion?

As religion is an integrated part of human history and culture, an L2 cannot be learnt without some mentioning of it in the language classes. Teaching about religion cannot only help L2 learners learn the L2 itself but other general knowledge such as history, music and arts. However, differences should be made between teaching religion and teaching about religion and some guidelines should be followed if teachers are to teach it in the language classes.     

Culture Teaching in English Language Classes

Language is closely related to culture. Language expresses and embodies cultural reality, in the meantime, culture exerts enormous influences on language. Therefore, language learning is often culture learning. The author, based on the negligence of culture teaching in English language classes, illustrates the influences of cultural knowledge on reading, translating and intercultural communicating, and proposes suggestions on culture teaching in English language teaching （ELT）.     

Challenges and Approaches of Teaching EFL to Large Classes in China

Compared with the smaller class sizes in many other countries, China EFL classes are generally oversize with gaps of learners’language proficiency and competence, different language acquisition abilities, diverse motivations and attitudes which constitute a multilevel class with many challenges to class management and language teaching. Based on the views upon the issue of researchers from China and other countries, this paper identifies the challenges with large EFL classes and discusses strategies of coping in such a context by providing pragmatic guidelines of teaching EFL to large classes in China.     

The Mastery of Listening Skills for College Students

Aiming at solving the problems of lacking listening skills practices in English class. The paper is written for two purposes. Firstly, it intends to drive the attention of present obstacles in English listening teaching. Most children in China have their English classes at schools, however, they don’t learn too much English they just learn about English. After years of learning the problems come up: the college students who have passed CET4(College English Test) and CET6 are unable to speak or listen to native speakers. Secondly, it tries to introduce the listening skills and the methods of teaching it. Language is not a knowledge but a skill, to learn language does not mean to know as many rules and information about it, but is to practice from the first day your learn it and do practice as much as possible.     

Listening Strategies for High School English Examinations in China

Compared with other macro-skills,there are fewer insights about the process of listening and the way it is learnt.Although listening skill plays a significant role in language learning and communication,researchers devoted most attention to language learning strategies involved in reading,speaking and writing.Therefore,knowledge about listening strategies is still limited.This paper will focus on listening strategies for high school English exams in China.Firstly,it shows the background of listening tests in China and teaching procedures of listening in my school.Secondly,the paper discusses the process and the impact of explicit strategy instruction.Then,the article will introduce the definition and previous application of metacognitive strategies in second language(L2) listening.After that,I will employ metacognitive strategies to modify the teaching practice in detail by instructing students to follow these three steps,planning,monitoring and evaluating.At last,the paper concludes with the limitations of the article and the orientation for further study.     

An Investigation on Cross-cultural Communication between ForeignTeachers and Chinese Students in College EFL Classes

Nowadays,more and more foreign teachers have come to or been invited to China,joining in the English education cause,especially in colleges and universities.Using the methods of questionnaires and interviews,this paper conducts a survey of three foreign teachers and one hundred Chinese English majors at Qufu Normal University,aiming to explore their different perceptions and attitudes towards varied aspects of cross-cultural communication in native EFL classes.The quantitative and qualitative data obtained from the survey were both processed and analyzed from such categories as "teaching contents","teaching attitude","teaching methods","classroom interaction" and "cultural background".The findings suggested that intercultural communication plays a significant role in the process of English language teaching and learning at college native EFL classes.     

Task-based Teaching of College English Listening

With the reform of CET-4, CET-6 examination, the proportion of listening part obviously has been increased, how to improve students’ listening ability and the teaching of college English listening is worth to be studied and developed in the practice. Tasked-based teaching is particularly concerned in the English education area in China, which emphasizes to make learners study English naturally by finishing some task. This paper starts from the perspective of task-based teaching to discuss how it will be effectively pu t into practice in the teaching of college English listening. Task-based teaching can scientifically use class time to improve students’ independent learning ability.     

Can Listening Comprehension Strategies Assist ESL/EFL Learners?

Listening strategies are important in English learning and teaching. They are highly effective in developing learners’ listening comprehension ability. This paper firstly examines the theories of learning strategies and the uses of them in second language acquisition (SLA) and then reviews various research findings on strategy usage, such as the types of learning strategies used by good listeners, effective strategy training, and the teaching of strategies explicitly. The paper goes on to illustrate listening comprehension strategies involving top-down and bottom-up processes and provide with research evidence showing that using listening strategies can improve listening comprehension. Finally, the paper offers suggestions and principles for language teachers about how to teach listening strategies in second language classrooms.     

What does the Research into the Comprehension of Spoken Language Suggest in English Teaching

In English teaching, the listening comprehension plays a major role not only in Listening and Speaking classes, but also in those of other English courses.Yet,most Chinese students find it difficult in practice.Then, what should a teacher do to improve their listening comprehension?     

对大学英语听力课教学的一些思考

Many problems can be seen in the practical listening class, such as a distorted listening motivation, a lack of sufficient and authentic input and a corresponding neglect of metacognitive awareness of learning in actual teaching. In fact, what we are doing in the listening class is to test rather than to teach, to foster the passive receiver rather than the active learner. This article analyzes these problems from theoretical perspective, speculating on the limitations in terms of the comprehensible input, the affective filter and metacognitive awareness. Then, based on the author teaching experience, it provides some suggestions to solve the present problems. It suggests what is needed in teaching listening is careful consideration of pre-,during and post- listening tasks incorporating both the top-down and bottom-up processes.
