A Case Study of CATS Based on Industry‐Academic Collaboration

Abstract

The authors are responsible for managing a Teaching Company project. The normal qualification that a Teaching Company Associate would follow would be an MPhil or PhD. Instead, the route followed was Postgraduate Diploma/MA by Credit Accumulation and Transfer and learning contracts. This experience is offered as a possible model for similar situations.     

A Case Study of a Community‐Based Transition Education Project∗

Abstract

In Australia, the needs of non‐tertiary bound students have been the focus of a number of special initiatives funded by the Commonwealth Schools Commission. One such intitiative, the Commonwealth‐State Transition Education Programme was designed to help students prepare for work while completing their schooling. In this paper, a particular transition education project is described and its effectiveness as an agent of whole‐school improvement is discussed.

     

Is Social Media Too Social for Class? A Case Study of Twitter Use

This qualitative case study examined Twitter use by undergraduate and graduate students in three classes. Previous studies have shown that while some faculty use Twitter, few are incorporating it into classes despite many recommendations for such use. This study examined how students perceived Twitter as a classroom tool. As an optional activity, many started with Twitter but fewer continued through the semester. The study reports on content and counts of tweets as well as student self-reports on usage and interest. The researchers found students enjoyed being consumers of tweets but seldom retweeted or replied. Incorporating Twitter in courses will require careful consideration of scaffolding, modeling, privacy and course design. Questions remain as to whether the informal social focus of Twitter may overwhelm attempts to use it in more structured educational settings.     

A Pragmatic Study of Gender Differences in Verbal Communication——A Case Study of Desperate Housewives

Male and Female languages refer to those which are usually used by men and women or those which characterize gender differences. Based on the theories of sociolinguistics and pragmatics, this thesis mainly provides a contrastive analysis of gender differences in conversation of Desperate Housewives from the perspectives of politeness principles. It aims at investigating how the pragmatic principles are violated or observed in the conversations of the characters in the series, finding out some to minimize the misunderstandings in inter-gender communication and achieve effective inter-gender communication.     

Amory’s Growth——A Case Study of Oedipus Complex

According to Freud,the formation and the dissolution of Oedipus complex are the natural processes of one’s psychosexual development.The growth of Amory Blaine chronicled in Fitzgerald’s This Side of Paradise can be a case in point.His formation of the complex is promoted by his mother’s exclusive love and the indifference of his father in his growth,while his dissolution of it is accompanied by his identification with the father figure Monsignor Darcy and his efforts to search for a suitable object of love with several women.All those are very important experiences for Amory’s psychological maturity.

Design Decisions in Developing Learning Trajectories–Based Assessments in Mathematics: A Case Study

This article analyzes the design decisions of a team developing diagnostic assessments for a learning trajectory focused on rational number reasoning. The analysis focuses on the design rationale for key decisions about how to develop the cognitive assessments and related validity arguments within a fluid state and national policy context. The study draws on ethnographic methods adapted from science, technology, and society studies to document key rationales for decisions. For this team, concerns about the validity of both the assessments and the hypothetical trajectory, anticipated uses of the assessments, and the available distribution of resources and expertise to different project activities were all considerations for significant design decisions throughout the project. The study findings suggest that success in the design of trajectories-based assessments depends on teams’ attention to balancing core design activities with engagement in the external policy environment, balancing precision with utility for diagnosis in defining the levels of a trajectory, and balancing the goals of supporting and assessing student learning.

Manganese removal from the Qiantang River source water by pre-oxidation: A case study

We evaluated several different pre-oxidation treatments, namely the introduction of either potassium permanganate （KMnO4）, chlorine （Cl2）, or both to remove manganese （Mn） from the Qiantang River source water. Our results showed that Mn removal percentages were 12.7%, 71.0%, 17.4% and 58.7% when none of the oxidants, KMnO4 only, Cl2 only, or both oxidants were added, respectively. Furthermore, a field study showed that when the available Mn concentration in the source water was 0.14 mg/L, it could be reduced to less than 0.05 mg/L when a solution of KMnO4 （0.47 mg/L） was added as the oxidant.

Reconsidering the use of video clubs for student-teachers' learning during field placement: Lessons drawn from a longitudinal multiple case study

Although video clubs have been used to support (student) teachers' learning through reflection upon practice, less attention has been paid to their potential use for supporting changes in participants' practice over a period of time. Prior work has also largely treated (student) teachers as an undifferentiated whole that benefits in similar ways from video clubs. In this study, we problematize this assumption by drawing on three cases of student teachers to exemplify three different learning paths while participating in a video club during field placement. Reflecting on these findings, we discuss implications for differentiating the video-club approach to address different student teachers.
