Well, it's Cao Xueqin's classic, "The Dream of the Red Chamber". On December 18, nine British students arrived in Beijing for a seven-day trip after winning a 2006 Chinese Speaking Competition in Britain. More than 170 students from 36 secondary schools took part in that competition last month. It was organized by the British Council. Three of the students coming to Beijing won first prizes for Language Ability. The other six were first prize winners for a dramatic performance in Chinese entitled "A New Home for Lin Daiyu".     

Transcribing and Comparing Classroom and Casual Conversations

This article reflects on how to transcribe two audio recordings and conducts a comparative analysis on them,aiming at identifying the typical features of transcribing process and identifying the different features of classroom and casual conversations.The first recording is an institutional conversation recorded in a module called"Communication skills for teachers"in an under graduate classroom in Singapore.The second is a casual conversation occurring among four MA classmates who met for their sec ond time.The first part of this article focuses on the issues met and the insights gained in transcribing.The second part is a com parative analysis that leads to the conclusion classroom and casual conversations are two different genres of spoken interactions with distinctive features shaped by field and tenor.

When the Teacher Is a Non-native Speaker

One item in the questionnaire inquired whether the participants thought the NEST or the non-NEST was a better teacher. While an approximately equal number of votes went for either option （27 percent for NESTs and 29 percent for nonNESTs）, 44 percent inserted “both,” an alternative which had not even been supplied in the questionnaire. The proportion of participants who chose non-NESTs as their favorites is high, especially given their linguistic inferiority. It follows from this that non-NESTs should be in possession of certain unique features that NESTs Jack. But what are they？ What gives non-NESTs their competitive edge？ What assets enable them to make up for their linguistic handicap？

Many international brands have a phenomenal Chinese name which,paradoxically,comes from a rather prosaic name.The reason for this may lie in the fact that they need an outstanding translation of their names in order to be successful in international marketing.Hence the translation of brand names is an important part of the advertisement.And a good translation is expected to bridge the differences of cultures,languages,spending habits,thinking patterns,etc.

Teacher development in China： A study of pedagogical training in TCFL

This paper on pedagogical training of TCFL （Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language） programs is based on the author＇s five-week study in the summer of 2008 at six Chinese universities. Based on class observations, interviews of teachers and students, and documents provided by the six universities, the author has found that their curriculum for pedagogical training is insufficient; theory and practice are often disconnected due to insufficient hands-on experience; and the training for cross-cultural communication skills needs to be improved.     

Does Regional Difference Account for the Formation of Prototype?

The study of categorization and prototype has been an interesting subject for the scholars in psycholinguistics. They have done different studies to investigate the reasons for the formation of the prototype in people‘s mind. Some scholars believe that cultural factors play an important role in the formation of prototype. This paper is intended to look into the categorization of the fruits in China, and the researcher hopes to get the factors which may to some extent influence their idea of typicality. The researcher believes that the regions where a person grows up in may have a subtle effect on his or her idea of typicality of certain items.     

The Contribution of International Student Mobility to Human Development and Global Understanding

International student mobility has been an important indicator for the degree of internationalisation in higher education. Today, international student mobility has moved from unorganised or self-organised study abroad to a variety of mobility forms organised within programmes. It has also become an issue of economic competitiveness, like attracting best talent, wealth creation and brain drain. This paper focuses on mobility as a limited period of study abroad （typically between six and 12 months） and not on mobility for the purpose of studying a whole degree programme abroad. Meanwhile, it takes ERASMUS program in Germany for example, analyzes the barriers to student mobility and possible solutions, and draws conclusions that widening participation and broadening geographical scope.
