This paper presents aspects of research into the position of women in surveying, highlighting in particular the changes that are occurring in erstwhile ‘male’ technological and professional areas, which are experiencing an unprecedented influx of women. These changes are not taken at face value as necessarily being of long‐term benefit to women, an attempt is made to look beneath the surface to find out what is really going on. The current state of play in the ongoing pursuit of gaining greater equality for women in higher education is considered, with a discussion of organisational structures which are still overwhelmingly male, in which women may have gained some ground, but men have lost few of their advantages in the process.  相似文献

This paper explores Indian women’s views on arranged marriages in the United Kingdom. It is based on research carried out with 32 Indian women studying at a university in the South East of England, UK. The article draws on Wenger’s social theory of learning to explore how Indian women’s participation in communities of practice in higher education contributes to their participation in arranged marriages. The concept of ‘social capital’ is used to discuss how women are able to negotiate their participation in arranged marriages, It is used to examine the knowledge and identity resources that women develop through their participation in higher education, which provides them with the means from which to develop the necessary ‘bridging ties’ leading to their active participation in the wider South Asian community.  相似文献

Commonly, the work situation of migrant and refugee women declines notably on arriving in the new country, irrespective of their existing qualifications and even after they have taken accepted qualifications. The primary objectives of this research were to test the hypothesis that women bring to their new countries skills and competencies arising from their education, working life and experiential learning, in addition to those learnt in the process of adapting to a new way of life, such as communicative and intercultural competencies, and to develop a typology which would facilitate access to appropriate education and training. This process also, crucially, involves vocational guidance and counselling to ensure that women develop goals which are both realistic and desirable to them. To this end an interview schedule was developed and delivered, after adaptations to local circumstances, to 120 women in four countries: Denmark, Germany, the Czech Republic and the UK. This paper presents only the detailed findings from the UK research. The main value of the data gathered is qualitative and the samples used were non‐random, but certain patterns emerged which are described in this paper. It was concluded that education and training were usually necessary in the new country but that a much more considered approach needs to be taken to placement on courses. The paper concludes with recommendations for practice by institutions of further education and case studies to illuminate the findings. Four case studies are attached.  相似文献

Women continue to be underrepresented in administrative positions within the education system in Ontario, Canada, despite the existence of employment equity policy for women for 20 years. However, while government reports present statistical data to monitor policy progress, little research has been conducted into how women administrators experience employment equity policy in their everyday lives. This paper uses data from interviews with female administrators to examine their perceptions of gender relations within the context of the provincial policy. First, the memories of these women, as they entered and achieved administrative positions, are presented. Second, I discuss their experiences of contradiction with respect to the policy in practice. Finally, I identify the ways in which these women construct themselves as agents of resistance and change. The paper concludes by arguing that existing relations and practices within the education system constitute an 'invisible policy', which must be acknowledged in order to understand the policy contradictions experienced by women educators.  相似文献

随着我国改革开放的不断深入,农村劳动力开始大规模向城市流动,农村留守妇女这个特殊群体也开始出现。留守妇女在促进农村经济发展过程中发挥了巨大作用,但自身也面临着劳动负担重、心理压力大、家庭教育困难、精神生活匮乏等生存困境。将农村留守妇女纳入成人教育研究和实践的视野,将更好地发挥女性在新农村建设中的独特作用,同时也是女性自身寻求发展的必然要求。本文分析了农村留守妇女的生存困境及原因,提出了成人教育改善农村留守妇女生存困境的应对策略。  相似文献
