The convergence of gaming practices with other media forms: what potential for learning? A review of the literature

Nowhere in the current digital technology landscape is the process of ‘blurring the lines between media’ more apparent than with the uses and applications of gaming practices and technologies. Here the overlaps between new media and media interfaces are becoming significant as games technologies and practices are becoming more pervasive as commonplace social practices. This article reviews literature for evidence of these trends of convergent media forms as a starting point for a wider debate for using games technologies and practices to support learning practices. The article outlines convergences between gaming and cinema, gaming and the Internet, and gaming and emergent technologies and interfaces (e.g. mobile phones and social software). The article aims to foreground major dimensions of convergence in relation to the potential of innovations in educational practice and activities. The article concludes that variant forms of gaming are widespread. But while the converging forms of gaming with other media forms provide potential for supporting educational practices, these new forms still need to be considered in relation to clear pedagogic strategies, supported peer interactions and tutor engagement.

挡墙对爆炸冲击波传播影响的三维数值模拟

采用有限元软件AutoDyn,对TNT炸药起爆后爆炸冲击波遇到挡墙时的传播规律进行了三维数值模拟,分析了冲击波遇到挡墙时的反射高压及冲击波的环流汇聚作用。结果表明：冲击波遇到挡墙时将会产生反射高压;在比距离较小时,挡墙迎爆面的最大压力发生在挡墙底部;而随着比距离的增大,压力分布将沿挡墙高度趋于均匀。由于反射的作用,在挡墙前的地面上将会出现高压;当冲击波绕过挡墙时,在冲击波三个方向的绕射汇聚作用下,将会在墙后面一定区域内突然产生局部高压,并且随着传播的继续,这个区域不断的扩大,最后再次形成球面波传播。

Distance education in the Turkish secondary education system

Conclusion The OHS, although newly established, has created great interest among all the media. It is evident that this interest will continue to increase. This means that the OHS filled a very important niche in the educational structure. It is believed that most of the problems faced at the OHS will be solved in a very short time, and new ways are continually being sought. But at the moment it is necessary to remember that high quality should be maintained, instead of focusing on quantity. This motive prescribes that educational technologies should be transferred to the educational system. To accomplish this, ways should be found to increase the finances of the OHS, and governmental support should be increased to improve the technical quality. In addition, it is necessary to change the regulation of the OHS as a project of the FRTED to allow the OHS to function independently. The resulting organizational structure should be evaluated effectively. Also, it is necessary to improve the structural effectiveness of local representatives of the OHS for authorization and duties. At the same time, it is essential to use the local high schools to provide face-to-face education for distance education students. If the critics are correct, the OHS will be an original secondary-school-level distance education institute and can be a good example for other countries.

An Analysis of the Competencies Needed by Trainers to Use Computer-Based Technologies and Distance Learning Systems

The purpose of this study was to describe computer-based technologies and distance learning systems currently used in employee training and to determine which technologies will be used in future training processes. The competencies needed by trainers to use the various types of technologies were also examined, including preferred sources of competency development. Barriers trainers face when implementing new technologies were also determined. A questionnaire was developed and used to collect the data from 381 ISPI members. The results indicate that organizations are using a wide range of technologies in training, and that the major types of technologies will not change significantly in the next three years. However, there are several newer, more sophisticated technologies that will be used with greater frequency in the future. The respondents indicated that it was more important for trainers to be able to use or assist trainees in the use of a system than to be able to develop new systems or programs. Vendor training and self-study methods were identified as the two most common resources for developing competencies in instructional technology.     

Convergent technologies in distance learning delivery

Conclusion Convergent technologies are beginning to make an impact on the delivery of learning material at a distance in the U.K. The author predicts that as course providers purchase more telematics equipment, two things will happen. First, as has been historically the case with the adoption of new technologies, costs of units will decrease as the user base increases. Second, and perhaps more important, users will discover and develop new and innovative techniques to exploit the capabilities of the technology. The only limits to innovation will be the imagination of the proponents of the new technologies. Time will reveal just how fast these developments occur
