Hemingway’s works have sometimes been read as an essentially negative commentary on a modern world filled with sterility, failure and death.Yet such a nihilistic vision is repeatedly modified by Hemingway’s affirmative assertion of the possibility of living with style and courage.Nihility in Hemingway’s works is primarily expressed in three forms:a) consciousness of death;b) consciousness of pains;c) consciousness of fantasies. It firstly comes from his life experiences, and then it is closely connected with his living environment and ages.Nihility makes notable impact on his creation.  相似文献

As the hero in Ernest Hemingway’s greatest masterpiece,The Old Man and the Sea,Santiago has always been considered as a perfect example of Hemingway’s stoical protagonists.Being one of the classic characters in the American literature,Santiago is noticed for his strength, wisdom, bravery, and above all,his unsurpassed endurance.Even though the prototype of Santia go in reality,as Hemingway once revealed in an interview,is an old Cuban fisherman who told him about his experience of catching a large marlin and losing it to the sharks in 1935[海],the spiritual prototype of the old man has been best interpreted in the Greek Mythology. To be more precise,Santiago’s spiritual prototype is the combination of Atlas,Prometheus and Sisyphus.  相似文献

Some researches have been conducted concerning the Markedness Theory about the marked and the unmarked, from aspects of Phonetics, Grammar, Pragmatic, Psycholinguistic and Sociolinguistic. Few researches have combined the Markedness Theory with literature theories and even no research has been done to study the Feminism Theory from the perspective of the Markedness Theory. This paper discusses markedness theory with regard to two basic issues: Why it is ok to say"历史"in Chinese, but the equivalent in English is"history", not"*herstory". Why the meaning of"governor"and"governess"is distinctively different? No research concerning the issues from the perspective of markedness has been conducted yet. This paper gives a brief review of the studies concerning the Markedness Theory, on the basis of which the question is aroused.  相似文献

Hemingway established a well-known literary theory - iceberg principle. He said he always attempted to create his literary works according to this principle. In his opinion,if a prose writer has a pretty clear idea of what he writes about, then he can omit the things he knows, and the readers will strongly feel that what the writer has omitted seems to have been written as long as what he writes is authentic.Hemingway himself once said,"The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one eighth of it being above water."Here, one eighth refers to the information given by the author, and the rest refers to the unwrit ten information that can be acquired in readers’imagination on the basis of the one eighth. The Killers is a good example of Hemingway’s iceberg principle. This essay will analyse the characters in it to show how the principle was used in this short story. With no doubt the iceberg principle leaves a large space for the readers to imagine and better understand Hemingway’s works.  相似文献
