The Implication of Prosodic Features’ Pragmatic Functions-For Teaching Listening and Speaking

Interactive communication is not straightforward but complicated. Prosodic features play an influential role in English communication. They can be used to signal certain pragmatic purposes in real situations for listeners and speakers to have mutual understanding. Identifying the pragmatic functions of prosodic features will facilitate the teaching of listening and speaking. English teachers need to clarify and emphasize the relationship between prosodic features and their pragmatic functions, attempting to work out how to combine them together into teaching in order to teach students to communicate effectively.     

The Teacher’s Role of Listening Comprehension

Throughout the history of the listening comprehension teaching at home and abroad, the research mainly focus on the correlation of the learner’s English listening proficiency and their self-efficiency. Scholars like Alisa J.Bates, Penny Ur. and Widdowson, H. G. have claimed the significance of teacher’s role in listening comprehension. For the purpose of proving the necessity of the teacher’s role in listening comprehension, based on the analysis of the features of classroom listening comprehension,this paper presents the teacher’s role before class, in class and after class. Meanwhile, during the teaching process, teachers and learners are revealed in two way interactive relations and the pedagogical process is the result of the bilateral interaction of the two sides.

Teaching English at a distance in China’s Radio and Television Universities

English language teaching (ELT) has played an important role in the Chinese Radio and Television Universities (RTVU) network since its establishment in the late 1970s. Based on a literature review and reflection from an insider’s perspective, this paper gives a full account of the RTVU distance ELT model, examining how it supports autonomous language learning, how autonomy features in its English courses/programmes and how well the students respond to the model. It also discusses issues related to the improvement of the model, including student support, course production, curriculum design, course assessment, and staff development. It is argued that ELT in RTVUs should not be ignored in the international academic community although not much is known about it outside China, and that the RTVU model may be of practical relevance to other open and distance learning contexts.     

An Analysis of Factors That Cause Jude’s and Sue’s Tragedies

Hardy’s novels are dominated with an atmosphere of fatalism,as may be found in his Jude the Obscure.This paper aims to analyze the character of the hero and the heroine,Jude and Sue,by revealing the contradiction and inconsistency concealed in their desires and deeds.As rebellious as they are,Jude and Sue never escape the confines of conventionalities while confronted with conservative forces.It is not only because of overwhelming power of conservatism but also a tragedy out of their seemingly rebellious compromise.

Becoming Badass: Teaching Katz’s “Ways of the Badass” using the Breaking Bad Television Series

Becoming badass is a phenomenological process where meaningful social interactions develop one’s sense of authority over others. Some of the key features of this process, according to Katz, include an ability to transcend moral injunctions, ability to intimate aggression, an inability to be influenced by others, development and display of an ominous character, a strong disregard for self-preservation, and the development of an alien identity. The main character in the Breaking Bad television series is used as a conduit to exemplify these key elements of becoming badass. Examples from the series illustrate the sensual appeal of criminal involvement from the perspective of the one doing crime.     

On Cultivating Students’ Intercultural Awareness in High School English Teaching

Learning a foreign language is not just a process of mastering the language skills, but also a process of understanding another culture. Thus, by analyzing the relationship between language and culture and the current problems in high school English teaching, it introduces several strategies of cultivating students’ intercultural awareness in English teaching, so that students can learn English better and communicate with foreigners decently.     

College Students’ Identity Self-awareness and Shaping in English Classroom Teaching

Review and Discussion of Children’s Conceptions of Computers

Today’s children grow up surrounded by computers. They observe them, interact with them and, as a consequence, start forming conceptions of how they work and what they can do. Any constructivist approach to learning requires that we gain an understanding of such preconceived ideas and beliefs in order to use computers as learning tools in an effective and informed manner. In this paper, we present five such conceptions that children reportedly form about computers, based on an interdisciplinary literature review. We then evaluate how persistent these conceptions appear to be over time and in light of new technological developments. Finally, we discuss the relevance and implications of our findings for education in the contexts of conceptual pluralism and conceptual categorisation.     

A critique of John Hattie’s theory of Visible Learning

In this paper, I work out a five-stringed criticism of John Hattie’s theory of Visible Learning. First, I argue that the theory is a theory of evaluation that denies education as such. Second, I show that there are problems with the dependent variable, learning, i.e. the effect of a given intervention. Thirdly, I show that Hattie's theory belongs to the radical constructivist paradigm. Thus, the problems of constructivism, i.e. problems of normativity and the outside world, walks directly into Hattie’s concept of teaching, resulting in a double breakdown of the essence of teaching. Fourth, I argue that Hattie’s concept of feedback has a centralizing trend which ultimately has the potential to transform the country’s educational activities into a big hierarchical and data-driven organism. Finally, I show that Hattie’s reference to Karl Popper’s theory of “three worlds” is based on a highly problematic reading, where Popper’s objective world is reduced to a subset of a radical subjectivity.     

Teaching: in light of Noel Gough’s and Ajay Sharma’s articles

In their articles, Ajay Sharma (Cult Stud Sci Educ, doi: 10.1007/s11422-017-9835-z, 2017) and Noel Gough (Cult Stud Sci Educ, doi: 10.1007/s11422-017-9834-0, 2017) shed light on the impact neoliberalism has on the teaching of science and suggest ways to ensure that science education remains critical and socially equitable. In this paper, I illustrate how their proposals influenced my instructional choices during the fall of 2016 in a course entitled Epistemology and Education.
