Speed-Discussion: Engaging students in class discussions

Courses: Communication Criticism, Rhetorical Criticism, Family and Communication, Gender and Communication, Popular Communication, and theory-based courses

Objectives: This activity engages students in dynamic, supportive, social discussion groups; helps them to identify and review the central ideas from the reading; and creates a record of their ideas that they can draw upon in later discussions. By the end of the activity, students should be able to (1) provide their own examples for difficult communication concepts, (2) work effectively with their peers, (3) understand a given case-study from a variety of perspectives, and (4) be prepared to contribute to a whole class discussion regarding sensitive, complex, and/or theoretical communication topics. Speed-Discussion is not a graded activity but rather a fun, low-risk, discussion activity that primes the pump for a dynamic, discussion-based class experience.     

Engaging the Social News User

One of the most common formats of audience participation in journalism consists of online reader comments in response to articles, weblogs, or online television and radio broadcasts. While initially the audience only commented on media platforms themselves, Facebook made it possible to outsource commenting to a third-party platform. The options users have, the rules commenters are obliged to follow, and the moderation regime they confront, could influence the quantity and quality of comments. In this study, we explore how news media deal with audience comments on Facebook and their own news site, and how this influences the quality and quantity of comments. We compared comments on news platforms and Facebook of 62 Dutch national and regional newspapers, public and commercial broadcasters, newsweeklies, national news programmes, and online news sites. Subsequently, we analysed the content of the comments with the qualitative text analysis tool MAXQDA. The results indicate that news media prefer outsourcing comments to Facebook although commenting on their own platforms is still possible. By discouraging anonymous responses, the quality of comments improved but above all the quantity of comments decreased after outsourcing comments to Facebook.     

Engaging students in active learning: use of a blog and audience response system

Librarians provide instruction to medical students as part of a core course in the medical school curriculum. Instruction was provided, in part, through didactic sessions covering professional-level medical information resources, PubMed search skills, psychosocial information, and evidence-based medicine. Librarians redesigned instructional sessions with the goals of increasing student engagement and minimizing the lecture format, maximizing the number of students receiving feedback on their search and evaluation skills, and permitting students to see a variety of possible responses as well as engage in peer- and self-evaluation. Librarians integrated the use of a blog and an audience response system (ARS) into the instruction to help accomplish these goals.     

基于活跃度指数的标签相关性判断研究

[目的/意义]借鉴活跃度指数的设计思想,提出一种新的标签相关性判断策略,以改善标签相关性判断的效果和策略的通用性.[方法/过程]结合标签相关性判断的特点对活跃度指数的计算方法进行改造,进而提出一种基于多次活跃度指数迭代的标签相关性判断策略,并以社会化标注社区"豆瓣电影"的67 5351位用户的标签数据为例进行实验,以验证策略的效果.[结果/结论]实验结果显示,该策略的召回率为79.6%,准确率为93.3%,均较为理想,明显优于常用的Top-N策略.同时,该策略的通用性较好,适用于视频、音频、文本等各类型媒体.因此,该策略能够较好地解决标签的相关性判断问题.     

Current Social Theory:

The present list resulted from the need for a monograph checklist suitable for collection evaluation in a major research library in a field not readily accessible through traditional subject headings or existing lists. It may also be useful to students working in the field. Two sources for review and cited monographs were identified (Contemporary Sociology and The Annual Review of Sociology), and all relevant works from them for the period 1980-1985 were added to the list. Some preliminary bibliographic analysis is supplied, with hints for use in smaller libraries.     

基于相对频次的标签相关性判断优化研究

[目的/意义] 针对笔者此前提出的标签相关性判断策略进行优化,以提升策略的召回率,从而更好地支持标签应用研究与实践。[方法/过程] 为提升策略的召回率,以标签与认知的基本关系为基础,提出一种基于相对频次的改进策略,并以社会化标注社区"豆瓣电影"的675 351位用户的标签数据为例进行实验,以验证策略的效果。[结果/结论] 结果显示,该策略使得标签相关性判断的效果得到了显著改善。其中,对于频次不小于5的标签,策略的召回率大幅提升,由79.63%升至89.36%;准确率虽有略微下滑,由93.33%降至92.02%,但仍保持在较高水平。     

Repeated Exposure to Daytime Soap Opera and Shifts in Moral Judgment Toward Social Convention

This study examined the influence of prolonged exposure to soap opera on character dispositions and real-world moral judgments. Eight groups viewed from 0–7 weeks of soap opera prior to a final week after which participants completed measures of disposition towards show characters as well as perceptions of morality in real-world situations. Results demonstrated the effect of prolonged exposure on both the polarization of dispositions toward characters and a trend in moral judgments toward social convention. These findings highlight the role of disposition within social cognitive theory, and the importance of dispositional considerations in understanding learned morality.     

社会临场理论的三个内生性问题

社会临场理论是媒体技术与社会研究领域的一个重要理论。该理论扎根于符号互动论和人际传播的社会心理学。本文指出了社会临场理论在内在阐述逻辑上与既有理论根源的断裂,并以晚近的实证研究和新媒体的日常使用经验为依据,对该理论做了一次批判性的检视。本文发现该理论存在三个主要问题:临场者与互动者的混淆、情境的缺失以及预设因果链的经验性缺陷。这一反思性的理论检视有助于我国学者批判性的应用该理论对新媒体的诸多问题加以研究。     

Engaging Families in Public Libraries

Public libraries today are undergoing significant transformations as well as interacting with patrons in new and different ways (Knight Foundation 2017). Part of this transformation is the way libraries are engaging entire families. Libraries are playing a stronger role than ever before in supporting families to promote children’s early literacy and reading skills (Celano and Neuman 2015; Nagle et al. 2016; Neuman and Celano 2010), stimulating adult learning (Boden and Tashijan 2015), creating initiatives to improve family health (Morgan et al. 2016), providing services to families with extreme challenges such as those experiencing poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, and incarceration (Holt and Holt 2010; Terille 2016), as well as becoming spaces for families, especially those who are recent immigrants, to build new relationships and social networks (Khoir et al. 2017; Vårheim 2014). Despite these efforts, few studies have specifically sought to understand the organizational dimensions that support family engagement within a library system and the potential that these efforts have in promoting children’s learning not only in the early years, but also into and throughout middle childhood and adolescence. Based on a yearlong study investigating the power of family engagement in public libraries, this article considers how libraries can begin to adopt a systemic approach to family engagement to further innovate the library space.     

Engaging Students in Searching the Literature

Abstract

In 2014, the library curriculum for the College of Pharmacy was revised, with the number of sessions increased from one per term for two terms to one per term for three terms, instruction was scaffolded, and the flipped classroom model was employed, with active learning and assessments used throughout. This article will describe how the active learning portion of one session was gamified: why a “serious game” was the correct tool to use to improve student learning, how the game was created, and what was the theory underlying this transformation.     

社会控制论视角的文献控制论述略

书目控制是文献控制的组成部分,而文献控制又是社会控制的组成部分。着重论述社会控制的基本概念和原理,认为社会控制论应该成为文献控制论的上位理论。在梳理我国文献控制论研究现状的基础上,认为我国文献控制论研究目前处于低谷阶段。提出的主要观点有:①书目是书目控制的手段,文献控制的手段则包括书目手段在内的其他多种社会手段,但书目控制和文献控制的对象都是文献;②文献控制的目的是为了使文献的生产、传播和利用活动有利于社会秩序的维护,从而有利于保障社会成员的利益;③对文献控制手段的科学划分和控制机制的深入分析,是文献控制论研究的重点;④我国以往的文献控制研究在广度和深度上都存在缺陷,主要原因在于没有引入社会控制理论;⑤控制论、社会控制论和文献学是文献控制论的理论基础;⑥图书馆学、情报学、档案学、文献学应该共同承担研究文献控制问题的责任。     

Age Differences in Online Social Networking: Extending Socioemotional Selectivity Theory to Social Network Sites

This article extends socioemotional selectivity theory to online social networking by examining age differences in the size and composition of Facebook networks across a wide age range of Facebook users (18 to 93 years old) in a nationally representative sample. Findings suggest increasing selectivity of Facebook social partners with age. Compared to younger adults, friend networks of older adults are smaller but contain a greater proportion of individuals who are considered to be actual friends. Moreover, a higher proportion of actual to total Facebook friends is associated with lower levels of social isolation and loneliness across the life span.     

语段结构方法在社会媒体信息处理中的应用

[目的/意义] 社会媒体中的信息抽取是信息过载环境下创新社会媒体服务应用面临的重要问题,为此介绍一种可应用于社会媒体信息处理的语段结构方法。[方法/过程] 梳理语段结构方法的国内外研究进展,阐述其基本原理,并通过一个微博实例进行验证分析。[结果/结论] 通过以上工作,探讨将语段结构方法应用到中文社会媒体信息处理中的可行性,以及应用该方法实现中文信息机器处理所面临的研究问题与挑战。     

Influence of Social Identity on Self-Efficacy Beliefs Through Perceived Social Support: A Social Identity Theory Perspective

While much research documents the influence of self-efficacy on enactment of health behaviors, relatively less attention has been given to the factors that influence self-efficacy. To enhance our understanding of the various sources of self-efficacy, this study integrated social identity theory into this context and proposed and tested a model, which describes a process through which social identity can influence self-efficacy of engaging in health-related behaviors. Consistent with the proposed meditational model, the findings showed that individuals who had stronger social identity with a given social group perceived greater social support from the group, which in turn predicted higher self-efficacy of engaging in a health-related behavior advocated by the group, and ultimately predicted greater behavioral intention. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
