Getting to Know You: Breaking the Ice in the Public Speaking Course

Objective: To allow students an opportunity to speak publicly on the first day of class while becoming familiar with fellow students. The activity encourages students to examine the perceptions and stereotypes they have about one another by blindly guessing certain characteristics about their partner. By participating in the exercise, students will begin to think about how they will deal with anxiety in a speaking situation, and they will be introduced to the concept of audience analysis. The exercise also allows the instructor an opportunity to assess beginning speaking ability and level of speaking comfort while getting to know students quickly.

Course use: The exercise is intended for the basic Public Speaking course but can be adapted to many other communications courses. The icebreaker is ideal for public speaking because it gives students a chance to speak publicly, often for the first time, without the pressure of getting a grade. Being paired with a partner also seems to help students reduce their speaking anxiety. The activity would also work well in a basic communication course as it allows for the exploration of key concepts such as perception and stereotypes. Regardless of the course, the key to the successful execution of the ice breaker is to conduct it on the first day when most students are unfamiliar with each other.

Reducing Stressful Aspects of Information Technology in Public Services

Although information technology has made locating and organizing information faster and easier in many ways, it also constitutes a source of stress for both public services librarians and patrons. This study identifies a number of sources of technological stress, which include everything from poor typing skills to poor interface design. It also proposes several ways to reduce technological stress, such as implementing a system gradually, communicating with staff about what to expect, providing adequate training for librarians, creating proper documentation, choosing ergonomically sound hardware and software, selecting a well designed interface, and involving staff and patrons in system design.     

Assessing the Readability of College Textbooks in Public Speaking: Attending to Entry Level Instruction

More research is needed that examines textbooks intended for the entry level college classroom. This study offers valuable information to academics that adopt a public speaking textbook for instruction as well as objective feedback to the collective authors. Readability levels of 22 nationally published textbooks, based on McGlaughlin's (1969) SMOG readability index, are reported. The mean readability level for all textbooks combined equated to a (M= 15.66) grade level with a SD (.71) less than one grade level of difficulty and a range of 2.83 grade levels. It should be noted that the SMOG index is based on 100% reader comprehension and tends to rate difficulty two grade levels higher than comparable measures. An ANOVA and corresponding t-tests indicate significant differences with respect to the readability among texts. Implications of findings, limitations of this study, recommendations for teachers, and directions for future research are provided.

图书馆消减民众信息搜寻焦虑的实证分析

[目的/意义]从用户视角分析图书馆帮助民众有效消减信息搜寻焦虑的作用机理，自下而上地评估图书馆在信息社会化进程中为民众提供公共文化服务的实际成效。[方法/过程]通过对708位图书馆用户进行问卷调查，运用结构方程模型对个体特征、图书馆使用行为、图书馆使用体验和信息搜寻焦虑之间的相互作用机理进行实证检验。[结果/结论]个体的教育、经济差异通过中介变量对信息搜寻焦虑产生显著影响，表现为教育水平较低、经济收入较高的两组群体焦虑感更强；图书馆使用体验越好，越有助于消减用户日常信息搜寻活动中产生的焦虑感；图书馆使用行为对信息搜寻焦虑不存在显著影响，但对其子维度认知能力障碍与信息利用障碍存在间接的负向影响。

我国省市自治区公共图书馆借阅证现状调查研究

通过对46家省市自治区公共图书馆借阅证现状的网络调查,发现存在进馆门槛高、办证费用高、等级划分读者权利、忽视弱势群体的办证权利、图书馆借阅证拥有率低等问题,提出了立法保障读者图书馆权利、免证进馆、免费办证、改革押金制度、一证通用、为弱势群体提供办证优待以及加大图书馆借阅证宣传推广等建议。     

Music and Identity in a Postcolonial World: Radio Airplay of Lusophone Music in Public Service Broadcasting in the Portuguese- Speaking World

With music being one of the key elements of radio, and plurality one of the most important principles of public service, this article’s central argument is that one of the missions of public radio is to foster musical elements produced in the country’s national language. Focusing on traditional musical genres of the Portuguese-speaking countries, we will analyze the role of music in public radio by selecting specific musical shows focused on the Lusophone world. In order to determine the presence and impact of Lusophony in national stations, music will be the common thread for a reflection on how multicultural their programming strategies are able to be.
