The continuing evolution of the Canadian university-industry relationship, particularly in the past five or ten years, is discussed. The effects of the need for increased industrial funding of the universities and the need for capable graduates by industry are reviewed. But it is the increasing industry-university interface in science and technology that is changing most rapidly. Academic and industrial research overlap in many complex ways and if Canada is to be a competitive industrial country we must seek additional vehicles to bring working scientists and engineers from university and industry together.  相似文献

The new technology (such as ScholarOne) used for submitting papers to academic journals (such as this one) increases the possibilities for gathering, analysing and presenting summary data on stages in the refereeing process. Such data can be used to clarify the roles played by editors and publishers as well as referees—roles less widely discussed in the previous literature. I conclude, after a review of related issues, that refereeing should be “open” in this information age—i.e. correspondence between editors, referees and authors should be open and available, and not private. Some of the issues involved in achieving this are outlined and discussed.  相似文献

Conclusion Despite their persistent economic ills, the Spanish-speaking areas of the world have managed to successfully cross the threshold into the Information Age. As programs and technology such as those described in this article continue to proliferate, perhaps Spanish-speaking countries will eventually surpass those countries that today are better equipped and trained in computer technology. It is not unfeasible to predict that, should the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) finally establish an open market with México, and eventually with other countries of Latin America, the Hispanic world would quickly emerge as one of the prime leaders of the Information Age.  相似文献

Abstract

Both campus-based universities and distance teaching universities are highly bureaucratised organisations that have eroded the traditional autonomy of the academic and created environments in which education is dehumanised. Developments in telecommunications and computer-based communications open up the possibility of creating new forms of interactive universities that can operate globally, irrespective of the place of abode of either students or staff. Exploiting these possibilities to advantage will require the development of new social relations, and in particular of different cash relationships between academics, students, and validating or licensing authorities that will, in many ways, mirror the artisanal organisation of the twelfth-century university. Such interactive universities will, however, be well suited to meet the lifelong learning needs of mobile knowledge workers.  相似文献

The need for literacy and the English curriculum to attend to digital literacies in the twenty-first century is well established. Although studies in digital literacies have examined the inclusion of computer games in schools, there has not been an extended study of English teachers incorporating computer games into their teaching and learning through action research projects. This paper outlines the structure and progress of a research project exploring the uses of computer games in English classrooms. We argue that much can be learned about the teaching of both print and digital literacies from examining computer games and young people's engagement in online digital culture in the world beyond school.  相似文献
