Interview with Ariadne

Ariadne's story advocates the impetus for launching initiatives to raise awareness on the multiple returns of investment in educational initiatives during the Third Age. Ariadne, a 69-year-old Greek widow, discovered the “world of learning” back in 2009 when she joined Adult Education Centres (AECs), referring with enthusiasm to a series of wider benefits having emanated from her encounter with Lifelong Learning. However, in May 2011, due to the economic recession, the Greek Ministry of Education abruptly closed all AECs and along them the “gateway” for many individuals like Ariadne to knowledge, socializing and active aging.

2007年4月20日,美国人文主义者协会和哈佛人文主义者牧师会联合向杜维明先生颁发了“人文主义杰出成就奖”,杜先生被称赞为“儒家人文主义的世界领袖,中国哲学方面在世的最重要思想家之一。”这说明因为杜先生等人的不懈努力和中国文化的广泛传播,中国传统哲学,特别是儒家哲学中的人文主义特征正在受到美国思想界的关注。同时,美国思想界也正在兴起“新人文主义”的思潮,其主要特征是尊重宗教信仰,但是采取多元主义的立场,同情和接受怀疑论者、无神论者及其他人文主义的价值观。杜维明先生认为儒家的人文主义和“新人文主义”有契合之处,但是他认为西方文艺复兴以来的启蒙思想造成了人们对于宗教问题的不敏感,以及人类中心主义的泛滥,这些思潮也对中国造成了很大冲击。杜先生认为儒家的传统可以为“新人文”和“新启蒙”提供丰富的资源。

Interview with Keith Spicer

In 1969, the federal government enacted the Official Languages Act, the intent of which was to secure for the French minority their language rights within federal government administrations throughout Canada. Keith Spicer was appointed Official Languages Commissioner in 1970. As Commissioner, his task was to interpret and implement the Act within federal departments and agencies.Prior to his appointment, Mr. Spicer had taught political science at l'Université d'Ottawa, the University of Toronto, and York University. He has also been active in radio, television, and newspaper journalism, as a commentator and interview host on CBC's French network and editorial writer for the TorontoGlobe and Mail.In the following interview, which took place in July 1977, shortly before he resigned as Official Languages Commissioner, Mr. Spicer reflects upon strengths and weaknesses in the implementation of the Official Languages Act and expresses his views on the current status of French language rights in the spheres of government administration and education.Since leaving his Ottawa post, Mr. Spicer has returned to university teaching and journalism in British Columbia.
