Don't Go to The Heaven,but to The Hell——Waking up and Growing up of A Boy

Falling in love with your lovers, it might be like living in the heaven. But when you find your lover is not the person you thinking of, it may be like falling down to the hell. James Joyce is a great writer who is always expert in writing the inside of the characters. His writing is always full of images of impressionism and epiphany. Impressionism is through the character's instant impression, especially the feelings of seeing light, shadow and color, present the individual activities in the field of emotional hazy.     

Persisting in Physics and the Physics Olympiad — Impact of Gender Identification and Sense of Belonging on Expectancy-Value Outcomes

The German Physics Olympiad is an extracurricular science contest for students. Here, they have the opportunity to compete against other talented students, can do physics outside of school, and take a first step to more engagement in the domain. Yet, female students participate in the competition in fewer numbers and are disproportionally more likely to drop out of the contest earlier than the male students.

The present study hence explored the question to which extent the German Physics Olympiad provides a threatening environment for female contestants’ intentions of persisting in physics. A total of 298 participants (28% female) were surveyed with respect to stereotype and social identity threat, as well as gender identification and sense of belonging as predictors of success expectations for and value of choosing to study physics. Success expectations and value of choosing to study physics were used as a measure for career intentions within the expectancy-value model.

The results support the conclusion that the contest presents an equally supporting environment for female and male participants. We found no gender differences in success expectations for and value of studying physics. Sense of belonging and gender identification significantly predicted success expectations but not value of choosing to study physics. Female participants in the German Physics Olympiad were also neither affected by stereotype threat nor by social identity threat in their sense of belonging or gender identification.

“My Eyes Were Opened to the Lack of Diversity in Our Best Schools”: Re-Conceptualizing Competitive School Choice Policy as a Racial Formation

This article documents minority youth sense-making around the concept of diversity and the founding of a youth activist group that seeks spaces for policy thinking and protesting against racial inequalities in selective enrollment schools. Utilizing the sociological theory of racial formation and the concept of racial projects (Omi and Winant in Racial formation in the United States, 3rd edn, Routledge, New York, 2014), this article draws on data from a critical ethnography. The author argues that youth activists offer a critical perspective for researchers and policy-makers in the face of neoliberal school choice policy. Findings reveal that youth activists understand a lack of diversity as racial imbalance in high status schools, and that they expose structural inequalities that are embedded in policy structures and processes such as selective enrollment high schools. Implications are discussed to show how re-conceptualizing policy as a racial formation can bring structural and institutional racist practices into view in hopes of transforming district policies to offer access to high quality schools for all students.     

“Connect,” Log It,Track It,Go! Techne—Not Technology—and Embodiment to Achieve Phronesis in Exercise Promotion

Given the rise in obesity and the positive exercise effects in curbing obesity levels, exercise promoters are expected to use technological applications—social media and fitness applications—in their exercise motivational programs. The purpose of this article is to critique the use of social media and fitness apps as both ineffective and potentially harmful. An alternative approach is proposed where phronesis (practical wisdom) in exercise participation can be achieved via physical and cognitive mastery of the action for its own sake (real techne-art, embodiment). Emphasizing exercise outcomes (e.g., energy expenditure) captured by external devices distracts from embodied and phronetic action. Drawing on the philosophies of phronesis, techne, and embodiment, exercise promoters should emphasize embodied exercise experiences via mastery of action, social interactions, and connectedness to nature. They should target real action in real communities, and not emotionless and meaningless online forums about how to become the ultimate virtual fitness buff.     

Exclusionary narratives as barriers to the recognition of qualifications,skills and experience—a case of skilled migrants in Australia

The paper reports on research conducted in Australia with (i) skilled migrants, (ii) public-sector recruiters, and (iii) skilled migrant placement officers (SMPOs), who assisted migrants into employment. Their stories were collected as part of a project, intent on improving recognition processes in higher education and employment by piloting a professional development program. The reported experiences underpin exclusionary narratives that prevent skills recognition and employment commensurate with qualifications and experience. The unsatisfactory nature of formal and informal recognition processes and their relationship to ‘subterranean’ forms of racism is explored.     

Performance of the geometric approach to fault detection and isolation in SISO, MISO, SIMO and MIMO systems

In this paper,a geometric approach to fault detection and isolation (FDI) is applied to a Multiple-Input Multi-ple-Output (MIMO) model of a frame and the FDI results are compared to the ones obtained in the Single-Input Single-Output (SISO),Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO),and Single-Input Multiple-Output (SIMO) cases. A proper distance function based on parameters obtained from parametric system identification method is used in the geometric approach. ARX (Auto Regressive with eXogenous input) and VARX (Vector ARX) models with 12 parameters are used in all of the above-mentioned models. The obtained results reveal that by increasing the number of inputs,the classification errors reduce,even in the case of applying only one of the inputs in the computations. Furthermore,increasing the number of measured outputs in the FDI scheme results in decreasing classification errors. Also,it is shown that by using probabilistic space in the distance function,fault diagnosis scheme has better performance in comparison with the deterministic one.     

On Love,Hate and Death in Wuthering Heights——from the passion of Catherine and Heathcliff

This paper focuses on topics of love,hate and death in Wuthering Heights. Love and hate are two aspects of conflict,which results in the death of two lovers. Love represents the lovers' union and peace,while hate stands for the lovers' separation. Death,which means the storm between the two lovers is gone and peace returns,symbolizes their re-union with love.     

Chapter 3 Meta-analytic contributions to the study of gender differences in mathematics — the relationship of mathematical and spatial skills

Meta-analysis has become one of the most powerful and popular tools for investigating gender differences. Two meta-analyses of gender differences in mathematical tasks, Friedman (1989) and Hyde, Fennema, and Lamon (1990), are reviewed here. They provide evidence that these gender differences are declining over time. Since 1975, scores on the quantitative section of the Scholastic Aptitude Test echo this trend. A new meta-analysis of correlations of spatial and mathematical tasks is reported in this chapter. Sherman's (1967) hypothesis that a male advantage in spatial ability produces a male advantage in mathematical tasks has inspired an abundance of studies: these, along with factor-analytic and more recent psychometric contributions, form the core of this research synthesis. Both spatial and mathematical tasks have been categorized, and correlations within different categories are examined separately. For the most part, results are not consistent with the theory that spatially-based skill underlies mathematical thought.

The Soote Season and Spring,the sweet Spring are two lyrics that sing the praise of spring.The common feature of the two lyrics is that the two poets depict a series of pictures of the sweet spring by rich and varied imagery for readers.When these pictures are presented to readers,readers feel as if they are participating in them,and the enchanting beauty of spring makes readers feel intoxicated with happiness.The two poets express their different feelings toward nature.     

Secondary school students’ perceptions of, and the factors influencing their decision-making in relation to, VET in schools

This paper addresses the issue of Vocational Education and Training in Schools — an issue that has recently attracted significant political attention particularly in light of current national skills shortage in Australia. Specifically, it investigates secondary school students’ perceptions of VET in Schools [VETiS]. It also explores the factors influencing their decision-making in relation to VETiS — that is, why one might choose, or choose not, to enrol in a VETiS course of study. In view of the findings presented, the paper argues that VET, and more particularly VETiS, is experiencing an “image problem” — one underscored by the need for curriculum design and delivery reform — and suggests that there is much work still to be done on the VET agenda.
