The changing roles and relationships of professional staff in Reference and Cataloging departments in the catalog creation process are discussed. Specific examples are given for handling classification, subject headings and cross references. The article stresses the importance of interface between the two departments in making the catalog more accessible to the users of the library.

Chat reference service in medical libraries: part 2--Trends in medical school libraries

An increasing number of medical school libraries offer chat service to provide immediate, high quality information at the time and point of need to students, faculty, staff, and health care professionals. Part 2 of Chat Reference Service in Medical Libraries presents a snapshot of the current trends in chat reference service in medical school libraries. In late 2002, 25 (21%) medical school libraries provided chat reference. Trends in chat reference services in medical school libraries were compiled from an exploration of medical school library Web sites and informal correspondence from medical school library personnel. Many medical libraries are actively investigating and planning new chat reference services, while others have decided not to pursue chat reference at this time. Anecdotal comments from medical school library staff provide insights into chat reference service.     

Problems in plannning medical libraries

In spite of many recent publications dealing with the methods of planning medical libraries, serious problems have been encountered in most of the proposals submitted under the Medical Library Assistance Act of 1965. Problems are viewed as falling into several major categories: administration, personnel, location, space allocation, structural, layout, and undue reliance on generalized formulas. Finally, the role of the librarian as the key integrating force in developing a sound building plan is emphasized.     

Regional utilization of the union catalog of medical periodicals system

This paper describes regional utilization of the Union Catalog of Medical Periodicals system and data base in producing union lists outside Metropolitan New York, the area served by the Union Catalog. A basic introduction to the Medical Library Center of New York's UCMP system is set forth, demonstrating the system's value in the production of such medical and paramedical union lists throughout the country. Several applications are then described, showing how these union lists were produced.

本文认为我国医学数字图书馆建设主要存在着思想混乱，没有形成共识、缺乏统一的组织和部署、元数据研究滞后、人才匮乏等问题。针对这些问题，作者提出了提高认识、统一规划、合理布局、多途径联合开发医学信息资源、推行统一的生物医学元数据规范和加强高层次医学信息人才的培养等具体的应对策略，以保证我国医学数字图书馆建设沿着正确的轨道顺利进行。     

Technological trends in Swedish medical libraries

Medical libraries in Sweden are digitised to a large extent, technically advanced and developing rapidly. This paper investigates technological trends among Swedish medical libraries in the near and distant future and their application within different areas of library activities. The authors also present a roadmap to increase technological developments within medical libraries in Sweden. Current technological trends include digital collaboration tools, mobile technologies and visualisation. Artificial intelligence, big data and smart technologies are upcoming trends. Technologies are applied within all areas of library activities, but preconditions for academic and hospital libraries differ. To remain a relevant provider of information services, libraries must be able to monitor, test and adopt new technologies.

医院图书馆和谐环境包含物层面上的和谐、人层面上的和谐和制度层面上的和谐3个方面。在构建医院图书馆和谐环境的过程中,需要读者与图书馆工作人员共同努力,打造一个“以人性为理念、以制度为准绳、以读者为中心、以资源为依托、以服务为目的”的和谐图书馆。     

New trends in medical libraries in hospitals

External and internal forces affecting medical library services are examined. Public Law 89-239, the Heart, Cancer and Stroke Amendments of 1965, and Public Law 89-291, the Medical Library Assistance Act of 1965 which was extended by Public Law 91-212 have an impact on medical libraries. The Veterans Administration relationships with primary beneficiaries of these laws are explained. Internally, effort has been expended through automation, networking, and extension of resources by amalgamation of books and audiovisuals to evolve responsive concepts with emphasis on independence through interdependence. The Veterans Administration Library Service plans and accomplishments in these areas are reviewed.
