Data Management Consulting at The Johns Hopkins University

As research data complexity and quantity grows and funding agency requirements for data management are articulated, there is a growing need for data management services (DMS). Within these services, one important role emerging is that of data management consultant (DMC). Roles were analyzed that these professionals play through case study analysis in the context of the Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Findings are reported in terms of the lifecycle of data, the functions of DMCs, the requirements placed upon them, and the roles such individuals play in the success of the DMS.

e-Science and Data Management Resources on the Web

The way research is conducted has changed over time, from simple experiments to computer modeling and simulation, from individuals working in isolated laboratories to global networks of researchers collaborating on a single topic. Often, this new paradigm results in the generation of staggering amounts of data. The intensive use of data and the existence of networks of researchers characterize e-Science. The role of libraries and librarians in e-Science has been a topic of interest for some time now. This column looks at tools, resources, and projects that demonstrate successful collaborations between libraries and researchers in e-Science.     

我国高校图书馆科研数据管理服务调查与分析

[目的/意义]以用户需求为导向,分析国内高校图书馆科研数据管理服务存在的问题,为我国高校图书馆开展科研数据管理服务实践提出切实可行的建议。[方法/过程]采用网络调查法,从服务内容、服务途径和服务基础3个层面对国内高校图书馆科研数据管理服务现状进行调查;以图书馆服务现状为基础,利用问卷调查法分析国内高校图书馆用户需求,总结出用户需求特点。[结果/结论]目前国内高校图书馆科研数据管理服务存在设计和计划服务缺乏、服务方式单一、网页说明和建议内容单薄、馆员咨询内容有限等问题,而用户需求特点则体现在用户在各数据管理阶段中的需求特点,用户对咨询、培训方式的需求特点以及用户需求的学科差异性特点。基于此,提出丰富服务内容、拓展服务途径、奠定服务基础的建议。     

中外城建文件档案信息集成管理与集成服务研究评析

对国家自然科学基金项目“城市建设文件档案信息集成管理与集成服务”相关的集成研究进行了中英文文献调查;通过分析中英文文献中集成问题的研究目的、研究内容和研究方法,归纳出中外相关研究的现状及趋势;通过对中外相关研究的比较与评析,对其未来研究提出建设性意见。     

Collaboration with the Business Career Services Office: A case study at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

This article presents a case study of the collaboration between the Business Career Services Office (BCSO) and the Business and Economics Library (BEL) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The collaboration with BCSO helped BEL to become a strategic partner to both the College of Business and to graduate Business students. A survey instrument used for program assessment demonstrated that library instruction helped students to realize the benefits of using library resources for their research and to feel confident in their research skills. This article suggests that instructional collaboration with student services can be a powerful tool to demonstrate the role of academic librarian as pedagogical partner, both to classroom faculty and to other campus constituencies.     

Survey on the Needs for Chemistry Research Data Management and Sharing

This paper aims to reveal the situation of research data in chemistry research process and chemistry researchers' need for data management support from five perspectives, i.e., data generation and collection, data recording and processing, data preservation and backup, data publication and sharing, needs for data management and sharing services. Our survey is based on a questionnaire carried out among 119 subjects, i.e., researchers and graduate students in chemistry of Chinese Academy of Science. The analysis results provide us with a better understanding on the current attitudes and needs of researchers and graduate students about data management and sharing in chemistry. Although this survey was implemented in chemistry, it could provide us with some inspirations for designing a range of library services for other disciplines, particularly in promotion, consulting and training of research data management and sharing, and research data storage.     

科研模式变革中的数据管理服务:实现开放获取、开放数据、开放科学的途径

随着信息技术的发展与普及,全球学术交流模式总体朝着开放获取的趋势发展,信息时代的科学活动需要更多的数据开放和共享。开放数据是公众参与科学、推动社会进步的必要条件。无论是对于图书馆工作还是对于信息服务、知识服务来说,科研模式的变革都是一种新的挑战。与此同时,在此背景下,也产生了一种新的机遇,即与科研数据管理相关的一系列新内容,包括:明确科研数据管理各利益方;明确数据管理服务的主要内容;塑造科研数据开放共享文化,开展各个利益相关者之间的数据对话;进行科学数据开放共享各个环节的政策研究;明确数据馆员发挥的作用和职业价值。表6。参考文献70。     

嵌入科研信息管理的高校机构知识库服务实践——以上海大学机构知识库为例

[目的/意义]高校机构知识库嵌入科研信息管理,是其持续发展和价值提升的新方向。介绍上海大学机构知识库嵌入科研信息管理的服务实践过程,旨在为高校机构知识库建设提供参考。[方法/过程]在文献调研和案例分析的基础上,了解国内外机构知识库嵌入科研信息管理的相关研究。针对上海大学机构知识库满足科研信息管理的需求,明确用户参与共建共享的服务机制,通过部门之间的共建与系统之间的共享,推广机构知识库数据的服务。在实践过程中收集反馈信息,从数据维护、归属管理办法和分层管理模式方面改进,并提出机构知识库深化共建共享机制的一些思考。[结果/结论]实践表明,高校机构知识库嵌入科研信息管理过程中,用户参与的共建共享服务机制是实现其可持续发展的有效途径。     

数据挖掘在图书馆用户资源管理中的应用研究

用户资源管理是现代图书馆资源管理的核心内容,是图书馆实现个性化服务的重要基础。数据挖掘作为一种深层次的数据分析方法,可以从大量的数据中挖掘出反映用户属性特征和信息行为特征的信息和规则,从而为图书馆用户资源管理提供极大的帮助。基于数据挖掘的图书馆用户资源管理包括用户数据搜集、用户数据仓库构建、用户多维特征分析和群体分类、面向用户生命周期的数据挖掘等主要内容。     

Acquisition and Management of Digital Content at the Library of Congress

The Library of Congress has been actively building digital content within its collection for some years now. This article addresses this digital collection building, covering both the technical means and the practical results. It discusses the underlying philosophies that are guiding the Library of Congress and identifies the areas in which the Library wishes to expand its operations along with the key questions it faces currently in meeting this goal. Finally, it seeks to share the lessons it has learned in the process.

Project Management Techniques at the Complutense University: Academic Librarians' Perceptions

This study examines how academic librarians at the Complutense University (Spain) perceive project management techniques that are becoming increasingly popular in library and information centers due to the need to comply with their strategic planning and services. To reach this goal, a quantitative and qualitative methodology was applied and a survey, in the form of a questionnaire, was used as a data gathering tool. The response rate was 31.2%. The key findings are based on respondents' education regarding project management skills and their expertise managing projects, as well as the presence of project management courses in the Library and Information Science Spanish curriculum. This study revealed that over one third of the academic staff completed their project management training by self-directed learning. Additionally, over half of them stated that they had not participated in any library project in the last five years, and almost half of the library staff concluded that project management techniques are quite important as formal courses in the Library and Information Science university programs. The study is interesting and revealing for those library and information services professionals who are facing day-to-day to users' demands and Library and Information Science challenges.     

Developing E-Science and Research Services and Support at the University of Minnesota Health Sciences Libraries

ABSTRACT

This article describes the development and implementation of e-science and research support services in the Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) at the University of Minnesota (UMN). A review of the broader e-science initiatives within the UMN demonstrates the needs and opportunities that the University Libraries face while building knowledge, skills, and capacity to support e-research. These experiences are being used by the University Libraries administration and HSL to apply support for the growing needs of researchers in the health sciences. Several research areas that would benefit from enhanced e-science support are described. Plans to address the growing e-research needs of health sciences researchers are also discussed.     

Librarians in the Lab: Toward Radically Re-Engineering Data Curation Services at the Research Coalface

This article presents a case study where students aspiring to professional library roles who need to understand diverse disciplinary research data practices are placed in a laboratory with domain researchers during an immersive module within graduate MLIS programs at the School of Information Sciences (iSchool), University of Pittsburgh. A qualitative analysis of evaluation commentary from faculty researchers and MLIS students demonstrates their positive bilateral learning experiences. The potential extension of the immersive model for the delivery of research data services directly to researchers at their point of need is explored and a connection made with the established concept of an informationist, as a medical library specialist working in a clinical setting. The re-engineering challenges for academic libraries in operationalizing the immersive model for research data services are articulated, together with the challenges for iSchools in building workforce capacity and capability for immersive team science.     

A Case Study in the Evolution of Digital Services for Science and Engineering Libraries

ABSTRACT

Building on experiences from earlier digital initiatives and partnerships, the University of Virginia has developed new services and forged new collaborations between traditional information technology and library units in support of changing approaches to science and engineering research and education. Over the past 4 years, the library has evolved through numerous service models, changes in institutional vision, and budgetary shortfalls and has emerged with a new understanding of where to invest resources and energy for coming challenges.

Reference Services to Police Officer Students at the School of Police Staff and Command,Traffic Institute,Northwestern University

Summary

This paper focuses on the reference services provided by librarians at the Transportation Library for the police officer students enrolled in the School of Police Staff and Command, Traffic Institute, Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois). Although this program is unique, the wealth of experience gained over several years can be useful for others who are planning and implementing services for adult learners within an academic environment. The Transportation Library's unusual organizational culture—a corporate library within an academic setting- and a variety of clients necessitates “changing gears” and services to meet the needs of each group.
