A Comparison of Inquiry and Worked Example Web-Based Instruction Using Physlets

This paper compares two protocols for web-based instruction using simulations in an introductory physics class. The Inquiry protocol allowed students to control input parameters while the Worked Example protocol did not. Students in the Worked Example group performed significantly higher on a common assessment. The ramifications of this study are discussed in relation to Scientific Discovery Learning and Cognitive Load Theory.     

Team-Based Testing Improves Individual Learning

In two experiments, 90 undergraduates took six tests as part of an educational psychology course. Using a crossover design, students took three tests individually without feedback and then took the same test again, following the process of team-based testing (TBT), in teams in which the members reached consensus for each question and answered until they were correct. Students took the other three tests individually with feedback. All students were individually tested over a portion of this content two weeks later and again after two months. Independent samples t tests revealed that TBT students scored higher when retested two months later than those who took the test individually. Finally, three-fourths of the students reported that they enjoyed TBT more than individual testing. Although TBT requires more class time to administer, it appears to be beneficial for long-term student learning.

在这个信息爆炸的时代,当前中职英语教学不管在内容还是方式都是滞后的。传统的英语教学都是有书可依的,但是一套教材无论如何新鲜都新不过我们每天通过各种媒体接触到真实的英语材料。用这些真实而又现成的材料来进行大学英语教学,不仅具有强烈的时代气息,能吸引学生的求知兴趣,而更重要的通过这些材料的学习学生既掌握了语言,又扩大了知识面,其它各方面的能力也能得到了锻炼。本文主要探讨的就是针对中职学生所设计的一种没有固定材料,而是以真实材料,内容为本(content-based instruction),并结合各种以网络为基础(web-based)的现代化教学媒体的新型英语教学模式。文中对其实施论述了理论基础并提供了一个参考性的教学设计模型,此外文章还探讨了这种教学模式的可行性,教学中的教师和学生的角色以及如何评价学生等。

What Hath the Coronavirus Brought to Assessment? Unprecedented Challenges in Educational Assessment in 2020 and Years to Come

This paper discusses the unprecedented challenges and possible directions in which the field of educational assessment is going after the outbreak of COVID-19. Though the pandemic leads to a lot of pressure related to instruction, learning, and assessment, it also provides opportunities that are likely to require changes to the current theories and practices as well as the assumptions that are no longer justified. It is hoped that the challenges will motivate our field and the instructional experts to work closely together with the learning and instruction process so that assessment will be better integrated and can provide data-driven insights related to the sequence and content of instruction based on the diagnosis of students' strengths and weaknesses from assessment data. We expect that the integration of assessment in learning and instruction will definitely exert significant positive impact on learning outcomes. We believe the field will become aware of the assessment issues that teaching at a distance presents and will come up with innovative solutions to the many emerging problems when the world of instruction and learning undergoes significant changes from social distancing. This paper provides comments, and predictions about what the challenges and directions in educational assessment will be.

Historical High-Stakes Policies Relating to Unintended Consequences of High-Stakes Testing

Current high-stakes, standardized testing policy is discussed through historical analogy with Chairman Mao's famine in China and the Maginot Line in France. Both of these national, high-stakes policies resulted in catastrophic failure. If the accountability movement's goals are to improve our ability to compete economically with other nations, we may also be heading for failure. Assessment should be aligned with the skills and knowledge crucial to our success in the future such as collaboration, experimentation, and comfort with ambiguity. Funds currently allocated to standardized testing should be reallocated to the development of measures for such skills and knowledge.
