Youth Perspectives on Parental Career Influence

The role of parents in youth career development is generally acknowledged though, often, perfunctorily. This inquiry examines youth perceptions of parental influence on their career development. We ask young men and women about specific career development attitudes and behaviors that bear on their relations with their parents. The sample consists of survey data from 362 high school juniors. The results confirm the trend of recent studies that report compatibility between parent and youth values, aspirations, and plans. Of all the people to whom youth can turn for help with making career plans, most look to their mothers. The findings apply across gender, to young men as well as young women; and they apply across race, to minority youth as well as majority-culture youth. The results underscore the importance of parents as allies and resources for career counselors in facilitating youth career development.     

大学生职业生涯发展教育之我见

在我国社会进步和高等教育迅猛发展以及人才培养模式、方式变革的大背景下,高校学生职业生涯发展教育越来越显示出其重要性和必要性。根据我国国情,把握好大学生职业生涯发展教育的实质、重点以及正确的导向至关重要。大学生职业生涯发展教育应立足于学生生源发展方向的引领、学生内在动因的激发、学生生涯规划要素的把握、学生素质拓展的推进等,还要防止以就业指导代替职业生涯发展教育、以职业生涯规划方案的具体指导代替职业生涯发展教育等误区。     

Enhancing Career Development Through the Career Success Club

The career development of students, demonstrated by students performing appropriate career developmental tasks, is important to institutions of higher education because career developed students are more likely to have career objectives, persist in their academic goals, gain career-related work experience, find employment in their chosen fields, and graduate. The purpose of this study was to determine if the career development of students by class level had been enhanced by participation in a career management plan specifically prepared for undergraduates. The intervention of a career management plan (i.e., the Career Success Club) was successful, especially for seniors and middles, in enhancing the career development of undergraduates. Career management plans may help students that are academically undecided to become more connected to their majors by focusing more on academic and career matters.     

Focus on the finish line: does high-impact practice participation influence career plans and early job attainment?

High-impact practices (HIPs) are important co-curricular educational experiences in post-secondary education, as they promote learning, development, and persistence among students. The goal of this study was to extend the research on HIPs to explore potential connections with HIP participation and career outcomes. Using data from the National Survey of Student Engagement, this study explores whether HIP participation influences college seniors’ post-graduation plans for career and further education and whether HIP participation has a positive impact on early job attainment for these students. Results suggest that even after controlling for a variety of demographic and institutional factors, HIP participation is a significant predictor of future career plans and early job attainment. HIP participation can give students a career-related advantage through transferable skill development, engaging in learning opportunities, and generating “stories” for potential employers.

职业生涯规划是指一个人一生职业发展道路的设想和规划。合理设计自己的职业生涯规划,是大学生通向成功的第一步。它可以使大学生充分地认识自己,客观分析环境,正确选择职业,采取有效的措施克服职业生涯发展中的各种困扰,从而实现自己的理想。本文以和谐理念为背景,结合当前大学生职业生涯规划存在的不和谐表现,对大学生职业生涯规划提出了一些措施建议。     

Academic Readiness and Career/Life Planning: A Collaborative Partnership Focused on Student Learning

The umbrella program called Keeping Options Open, initiated by Johnson County Community College (JCCC), is a collaborative partnership between JCCC and Johnson County high schools to meet the educational and career needs of learners. Assessment of academics and interests are key components when assisting students to make the best decisions regarding their high school and postsecondary educational plans. A pilot program was designed to deliver a series of 3-year tiered career development/academic readiness workshops for students and parents beginning in the sophomore year and building through the junior and senior years. The goal was to enhance career development for high school students by linking it with academic readiness.     

用科学发展观指导大学生职业生涯规划

职业生涯规划在高等教育大众化、大学生就业形势日益严峻的今天显得尤为迫切与重要。高校应以科学发展观为指导,构建大学生职业生涯规划指导组织体系,加强大学生职业生涯规划课程建设,建立相应的理论体系和实施方案,拓宽大学生职业生涯规划平台,加强大学生职业生涯规划咨询与测评体系建设,注重大学生职业生涯规划指导队伍建设,为大学生成人成才服务。     

美国学前教师职业路径的发展与借鉴

学前教师的职业路径不仅指其成为一名教师前的教育过程,也包含其成为教师后基于职业能力的生涯发展过程。近年来,随着美国社会各界对高质量学前教育的需求,对学前教师的职业能力发展也提出了更高的要求。基于此,美国各州为克服学前教师在职业路径发展过程中遇到的教育财政支持有限、职业发展规划缺乏、教师资格认证不同、学分之间衔接不足等问题,通过提供必要的财政支持、全面的支持服务、统一资格凭证、加强学习衔接等举措,形成了各州独特的实践举措。这可以为中国在进行学前教师职业路径发展中提供借鉴,需加强构建区域及国家级职业路径建设计划、完善"国标省考县聘"的学前教师准入制度、加强学前教师职业培训体系建设、注重现代教育技术在学前教师职业路径建设中的应用。     

The development of strong career learning environments: the project ‘Career Orientation and Guidance’ in Dutch vocational education

Schools are increasingly acknowledging their responsibility to guide students in their career development. However, the guidance that is provided in the Netherlands, as well as in other Western countries, focuses for the most part on helping students towards their academic achievement, and not on helping them to develop competencies to manage their own career. In order to promote this type of career guidance, 37 secondary vocational schools in the Netherlands participated in a project that offered a training programme, aiming to teach teachers how to conduct career dialogues with students. The programme offers expert guidance to integrate a dialogical approach to career guidance and a more enquiry- and practice-based curriculum in the school’s vision and policy. In this article, the results of semi-structured interviews with 50 teachers who participated in the project are presented. These interviews were conducted right after the start of the project, to study how teachers perceive the initial situation regarding career development in their schools, as well as their perception of the initiated plans and ambitions for development, both in their own learning environment and the learning environment of their students.     

Senior high students’ career plans for the future: outcomes of the comprehensive career needs survey in Southern Alberta, Canada

The Comprehensive Career Needs Survey was used to assess the career plans of senior high students in Southern Alberta, Canada. This article examines senior high student perceptions regarding (a) their future plans; (b) confidence in attaining their career goals, (c) importance of remaining in their community; and (d) where they anticipate working. The majority of respondents planned to combine full time education with part time work, were confident in achieving their career plans, and anticipated finding work in their country. Results indicate a need for programs addressing career decision making and combining education and work experience.
