中国人的姓氏

原始之姓当今社会,我们每个人都有自己的姓,而中国人的姓又都是从父姓,即延续父亲的姓。这和当今日本人以及英、美人的姓(surname)大体上一样。然而,我们中国人最原始的姓,即王充在《论衡·诘术篇》中所说的“古者有本姓,有氏姓”的“本姓”,却和今天的情景恰恰相反,则是从母姓,即延续母亲的姓。这从“姓”的字形、字义、字音上,可以得到一个肯定的答案。姓,在金文中写作“生”;“生”就是姓的本字。由谁生的,即姓之本义。后来加了女字旁,更清楚地表明它的含义。而且姓的读音起初也读作“生”。《说文》释姓曰:人所生也,从女,从生。由此可以…

Chinese Doucai Porcelain

Doucai is a variety of decorative porcelain formed by the combination of underglaze blue-and-white and overglaze decoration. Before firing, the contour of the pattern should be sketched on the base with blue-and-white, and some paffs should be filled with blue-and- white too. Then the painted base should be sent into the kiln and fired into blue-and- white porcelain, on which the blank of the previously-sketched pattern should be filled with paints of various colors. And then it should be fired again in the low-temperature kiln with oxiding flame about 800 degrees Celsius. As the underglaze blue-and-white and the overglaze decoration seem to contend for beauty, it is called ＂Doucai＂ （literally, compete for color）.

Acting Australian and being Chinese: Integration of ethnic Chinese business people

This paper reports the integration experience of ethnic Chinese business people as they search for a sense of place in their host country, Australia. Data were obtained from semi-structured interviews with 30 ethnic Chinese business owners in the city of Brisbane. The respondents collectively represent 12 types of businesses (e.g., retail, trade, and hospitality). Findings indicate that the two dimensions of Berry's acculturation model, the heritage culture and the host culture, are not necessarily creating incompatible demands on immigrants as they integrate into the host country. Instead, the two dimensions complement one another in the integration process. This paper challenges the dual majority-minority conceptualization, which treats home culture and host culture as existing entities, and it provides further support for viewing cultural identity as performance, always flexible, changing, situational, and being shaped by the immigrants’ interactions with their co-ethnics and the host nationals.
