An account is given of the present position of CrossRef and the background to it. Potential new developments of the system beyond those originally envisaged are then described.

Automating Veterans Administration libraries: II. Implementation at the Kansas City Medical Center Library

In 1985, the Kansas City Veterans Administration Medical Center began implementation of the Decentralized Hospital Computer Program (DHCP). An integrated library system, a subset of that program, was started by the medical library for acquisitions and an outline catalog. To test the system, staff of the Neurology Service were trained to use the outline catalog and electronic mail to request interlibrary loans and literature searches. In implementing the project with the Neurology Service, the library is paving the way for many types of electronic access and interaction with the library.

The China Medical Board and medical libraries in the Far East

The China Medical Board was created in 1914 to support the development of a medical college in Peking, China. However, its activity had to be discontinued due to the political change in China in late 1950, and the Board's new plans expanded into the whole area of the Far East in 1951. The primary program is to assist financially in the development of medical and nursing education and research; the library is one of the major concerns of the program. The assistance to libraries is categorized as follows: construction and equipment, books and journals, fellowships, and other items. An attempt is made to describe the actual status of medical libraries in the area since World War II from the point of view of the program of the Board.     

Coordination of regional libraries with Regional Medical Program projects

The Medical Library Assistance Act authorized the Regional Medical Library Program to improve information services in health fields, as well as other programs designed to help the health worker. Both the RMLP and the Regional Medical Program are based on regional cooperation to enhance the value of available resources, and to enable health workers away from main centers to use them. Services which Regional Medical Libraries must supply are described. As this program develops, more than conventional library services will be provided.Regional Medical Programs stress the continuing education of health-related personnel, and their need for health information; libraries are necessarily involved in such programs. The regions of the RMP are smaller than those of the RMLP, and the smaller regional focus may be an advantage.Specific examples of the coordination of library services and library-oriented programs are given.     

Publications on the use of cloud technologies at libraries

This paper gives a review of foreign and Russian publications on the application of cloud technologies in the work of libraries. The advantages and disadvantages of introducing cloud computing in library practice are analyzed. The opinions of library staff on cloud technologies and the potential for their use is presented. The experience of the most popular cloud librarian systems is considered.
