Quality Faculty: the Key to Ensuring Successful Transnational Educational Offerings in Southeast Asia

In the past year, the competition for transnational educational offerings in the Asian region has become more intense. One of the latest strategies in an attempt to win enrolments is the lowering of fees by international educational institutions and the reduction in the number of classes required for degree completion. The press and prospective students have made it clear that with the current economic crisis, price is the major consideration in their selection. The results of a study of the experience of Curtin University, an Australian university operating in Singapore and Malaysia, indicate that if quality faculty are involved in transnational educational offerings, even in these turbulent economic times, students will pay above the going rate for the opportunity to obtain the educational experience.     

面向东南亚的对外汉语教育资源开发策略

对外汉语教育资源在对象、内容、文化、媒介和智力等要素方面都各有特点,东南亚对外汉语教育需求也有其独特的特征.针对东南亚对外汉语教育需求特征,使用准备性策略、研制性策略和反馈性策略开发面向东南亚对外汉语教育资源,强调区域文化、区域教育生态特征和学习者学习特征,注重内容的选择和技术的使用,将在一定程度上解决东南亚国家汉语教育资源匮乏以及现有教育资源缺乏针对性、系统性等一系列问题.     

Educational psychology as an evolving discipline: trends and synthesis in Asia Pacific Education Review

Educational psychology has seen rapid growth as an academic discipline in recent years. The current study reviewed research articles published in Asia Pacific Education Review (APER), a journal that has been gaining greater international recognition, to reveal recent trends in educational psychology research in Asia Pacific. Specifically, the study reviewed general (country, research methods and academic subject) and topical trends among 84 articles published in APER from 2005 to 2013. Findings of the study revealed that studies on diverse age groups were conducted in various countries. Although quantitative research greatly outnumbered qualitative research, qualitative research appeared to be increasingly accepted. Topics from special education and counseling were actively studied, with the greatest focus on learner characteristics highlighting individual differences. Outlined research trends and related discussions in this study may be useful for educational psychology researchers in East Asia.     

Compulsory Policy Change and Divergence in Educational Attainment in Four Former Soviet Republics of Central Asia

For approximately seventy years, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan were part of a single educational system under the Soviet Union. Within only a few years of independence, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan decreased their compulsory education level to grade 9, but Kazakhstan continued to require attendance to grade 11. Data from UNICEF's Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, conducted in 2005-6 in each of the republics, provides the opportunity to test empirically whether observed differences among republics are significant and whether attainment in Kazakhstan is higher than in the other republics. Analyses confirm that residents of Kazakhstan are more likely to attend grade 11 and a higher education than residents of neighboring republics.

走向大国的中国需要重视作为重点发展的东北亚地区的崛起,这种崛起不仅仅在于东北亚的中、俄、日、韩、朝及蒙等六国经济发展,更重要的是实现持续发展中达致和平与稳定,因而教育的转型和崛起十分重要。在此,借鉴国际及珠三角教育合作经验,探讨全球化时代东北亚教育崛起的战略思路,建立区域教育合作发展机制,构建中国教育高地,推进地区繁荣与稳定,形成中国走向大国需要的重要区域环境和发展基础。     

教育改革在于创新

教育创新是理论创新、制度创新、科技创新的知识和人才基础。“教育创新是时代的要求”，是科教兴国战略的需要，也是教育发展和改革的需要。教育创新，首先要求解放思想。教育观念的转变是先导，教育制度是保证。教育制度创新包括教育投入制度、教育管理制度、教育教学制度等的创新。我们要根据十六大报告提出的战略目标，到21世纪初，建成终身学习的教育体系和学习型社会的教育体系。
